Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (PRVEP) were studied in 25 patients from 17 separate families with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) syndrome. Twenty patients had classic CMT with depressed tendon reflexes, slow motor nerve conduction velocities, and autosomal dominant inheritance. Four patients demonstrated typical findings of CMT, but there was no documented family history. One patient had the axonal form of hereditary motor sensory neuropathy. Abnormally delayed latencies of the PRVEP were found in four patients (16% of the total), including the only patient with clinical optic atrophy. T…

1. Somatosensory evoked potentials from electrical stimulation of the digital nerves of the right thumb have been recorded during the performance of various motor tasks in eight normal subjects. 2. The N20-P30 primary cortical response is only moderately affected by task context, while the P45-N55 secondary response is markedly 'gated' by movement of the stimulated digit. The late N140 vertex is variable. 3. In most subjects, active and passive movements are about equally effective in suppressing the secondary complex; but in one, passive movement has come to be rather less effective than acti…

In non-cephalic reference recordings, the scalp recorded short latency evoked potentials to median nerve stimulation in normal subjects consist of 3 positive potentials followed by a negative potential. The sources of these potentials have not been precisely defined. Therefore, these potentials were recorded in 31 patients with focal lesions of the nervous system. Recordings were evaluated for (a) the presence or absence of these potentials and (b) peak latency differences between components. The results were compared with similar data obtained on 25 normal control subjects. Only the first pos…

Somatosensory evoked potentials (S.E.P.) were used to examine twelve patients who had slow compressive lesions of the spinal cord (ten cases of spondylotic myelopathy, one neurinoma, one metastasis of a vertebral body). 73 per cent of the recordings were found to be abnormally reduced in amplitude, and/or showed prolonged latency times aa regards the primary and secondary complex. Patients with a clinical lesion of the dorsal column showed a clear reduction in amplitude in the recordings (sometimes coupled with slowed latency), especially in the primary complex. Patients with symptoms indicati…

Within the first 10 ms after a sine-shaped sound wave (tone pip) seven small-amplitude potentials can be recorded in persons with normal hearing and normal brainstem functions. These components, in the nanovolt range, correspond to the electrical activity of various pathways of the auditory tract. In accordance with this view the resulting potentials were assigned to the following structures in the region of the periphery and the brainstem: component I corresponds to the cochlea or acoustic nerve (receptor, II to the cochlear nucleus (medulla), III to the upper olive (caudal pons), IV to the l

Auditory evoked brain stem potentials were measured in a patient with occlusion of the basilar artery about 7 mm above its origin, resulting in the "locked-in" syndrome due to infarction at the junction of the lower one third and upper two thirds of the pons. The first three waves of the evoked response originating from the acoustic nerve and auditory nuclei in the caudal pons were normal in wave form, peak latency, and voltage level. Waves IV and V, generated in the region of the lateral lemniscus and inferior colliculus in rostral pons and caudal midbrain, demonstrated prolonged peak latency

Slices of olfactory cortex from guinea pig, incorporating the lateral olfactory tract (LOT), were maintained in a glucose-bicarbonate solution in vitro. Stimulation of the LOT produced: 1) A summed LOT action potential; 2) A monosynaptic surface-negative wave (N-wave); and 3) A polysynaptic surface-positive wave (P-wave) as recorded from the pial surface of the slice at 24 degrees C. During a period of single stimulus pulses to the LOT, local anesthetics and barbiturates, applied to the incubating solution, depressed the amplitude of the action potential (while increasing its latency and thres

The use of transcallosally evoked cortical potentials to study the action of intracarotidly injected drugs on cerebral synapses has necessitated the demonstration that vagal, baroreceptor, and chemoreceptor influences do not play essential roles in the drug effects observed-for example, the cerebral synaptic inhibitory action of serotonin.

An adolescent was implied in a car accident in which he suffered a head trauma without any substantial loss of consciousness. The posttraumatic syndrome was characterized by headaches and mental symptoms: nervousness, feelings of depersonalization, impaired memory, difficulty in concentration. Neurological examination and laboratory tests have always been normal but for a large perduring asymmetry at the Cortical Auditory Evoked Response. This finding is commented in the light of a review of the literature and of some neuropsychological findings.

There has been a tremendous growth in the use of evoked potential techniques in the orthopedic and neurosurgical operating rooms. The popularity of evoked potential monitoring has evolved from the surgeon's need to know the impact of surgical manipulations on the central nervous system. It is safe and practical to monitor the electrophysiological function of the cortex, brainstem, cranial nerves, and motor and sensory pathways in the spinal cord utilizing evoked potential techniques. This paper presents a review of these techniques.

Although chronic pain in feline osteoarthritis involves neuro-sensitization, the associated sensory changes have not been studied. Cats with osteoarthritis (n = 20) and healthy controls (n = 6) were assessed for peripheral (paw withdrawal threshold, PWT) and spinal (response to mechanical temporal summation, RMTS) sensitization, with lower values indicating higher neuro-sensitization. Functional impairment was assessed using the Montreal Instrument for Cat Arthritis Testing, for Use by Veterinarians [MI-CAT(V)], with higher scores indicating greater impairment. Cerebral sensory integration was
