Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample and US weather data, we estimated the probability of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) being diagnosed as Legionnaires' disease (LD). LD risk increases when weather is warm and humid. With warm weather, we found a dose-response relationship between relative humidity and the odds for LD. When the mean temperature was 60°-80°F with high humidity (>80.0%), the odds for CAP being diagnosed with LD were 3.1 times higher than with lower levels of humidity (<50.0%). Thus, in some regions (e.g., the Southwest), LD is rarely the cause of hospitalizations. In other

Neonatal arterial thrombosis is a very rare entity with clinical findings resembling coarctation of aorta or interrupted aortic arch. A two day-old male newborn was admitted to a different hospital with difficulty in sucking and sleepiness. On echocardiographic examination, a diagnosis of interrupted aortic arch was made and he was treated with prostoglandin E2. When the patient presented to our center, physical examination revealed that his feet were bilaterally cold. The pulses were not palpable and there were ecchymotic regions in the lower extremities. Echocardiography ruled out interrupte

We studied the epidemiology, incidence, and outcome among children and adolescents admitted for possible replantation or revascularisation of an injured upper extremity during the period 1998-2008. Twenty-nine patients with 38 finger injuries were admitted. Eight of the 29 had a severe amputation injury. The annual rate of all amputations in the referral area of 300,000 children was 0.42/100,000 children/year and total amputation injuries 0.18/100,000 children/year. Most injuries occurred in patients aged 12-15 years. The survival after total amputations was 6/14 and after subtotal amputations

Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM) is a B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder associated with bone marrow involvement of lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (LPL) and an IgM monoclonal gammopathy. Generally B-lymphocytes in LPL do not express CD5 that is important for differential diagnosis of B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. In WM, various renal diseases and type I cryoglobulinemia are well described separately, but cryoglobulinemic glomerulonephropathy is very rarely reported. A 61-yr-old woman complained of generalized edema, cyanosis of the extremities in cold weather, visual disturbance, and pa

Apparently unimportant diseases of some prominent figures can have a considerable effect on the course of time at turning points in world history. It is quite conceivable that the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815 had been lost by France because Napoleon was not in full possession of his powers, because he was suffering from acute cystitis. Adverse weather conditions with continuous rain and coldness in advance of the battle, extremely primitive hygienic conditions and more than simple quarters for the night led to the development of cystitis. Based on the records of his biographers, his pers

Physiotherapy in osteoporosis essentially takes the form of stimulatory therapy tailored to the findings and the pathomechanism. The choice of therapy and its dosage depend on the desired result (prevention, cure, rehabilitation). Physical therapy applied in osteoporosis includes electrical, thermic (hydrothermic, high frequency thermic, light thermic) and mechanical (massage, physiotherapy) stimuli, which can be applied regionally, locally or hoistically. To be efficient, a pain therapy requires that the various painful states be differentiated between: whereas, for example, in the case of ac

Carbon monoxide is a nonirritant, odorless, colorless gas, and is lighter than air. It is an end product of the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. Its effects are most prominent in organs sensitive to oxygen deprivation, such as the heart, brain, and kidney. Carbon monoxide poisoning becomes more abundant in winter and at cold places. In Turkey, every year we see several deaths due to poisonous gas leaks from coal or wood stoves. Deaths particularly due to hypoxia-related central nervous system damage and ventricular dysrhythmias are observed. On the other hand, an association between thro

Gram-positive, spore-forming, aerobic bacterium Bacillus anthracis is an etiological agent of anthrax a disease very dangerous to humans and all warm-blooded animals. The spore forms are markedly resistant to unfavourable environmental extremes of heat, cold, desiccation, chemicals, irradiation etc. The vegetative forms characterised virulence factors: the antiphagocytic poly-gamma-D-polipeptide capsule and three proteins, edema factor (EF), lethal factor (LF) and protective antigen (PA). Anthrax is mainly transmitted from animals to man through food of animal origin, animal products and conta

Five patients developed symptoms of Raynaud's phenomenon and upper extremity paresthesias after 7-32 months of exposure to air-powered surgical instruments used for the harvest of bone for bone banks. Results of cold challenge plethysmography, nerve conduction studies, vibrotactile thresholds, and quantitative sensory testing were as follows: all patients had significant reproducible vasospasm with nondetectable finger systolic blood pressure (FSBP = 0) after local digital cooling; nerve conduction abnormalities included delayed median nerve sensory conduction (< 48 m/s) across 5 of 10 wrists;

A 24-year-old female was admitted complaining of coldness of left upper extremity and pulsating tumor of the neck. She was diagnosed as ascending aortic aneurysm, left common carotid artery aneurysm and left subclavian artery obstruction due to aortitis syndrome on examinations. Although steroid treatment appeared to be effective in controlling inflammatory reaction, the left common carotid artery aneurysm increased in size and severe neck pain started. The risk of rupture was feared, and surgical intervention was carried out in spite of aortitis in active phase. The patient underwent surgery

The major clinical problem in considering a diagnosis of sinusitis is differentiating uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infection from a secondary bacterial infection of the paranasal sinuses that may benefit from antimicrobial therapy. A diagnosis of sinusitis is suggested by presentation with protracted upper respiratory tract symptoms or a cold that is more severe than usual with fever and purulent nasal discharge. Confirmatory tests of sinus disease are transillumination (useful in adolescents if interpretation is confined to the extremes--normal or absent); radiographic findings of op

Three patients with aneurysmal dilations of the saphenous vein at the upper part of the leg have been presented. Arterial aneurysms are relatively frequent, but venous ones are exceptionally rare, and in the world literature, up-to-now, there have been reported about 300 such aneurysms. The most frequent localization of venous aneurysms is at the neck, and then at the area of upper and lower extremities. Diagnosis of aneurysmal dilated saphenous vein, in our three patients was done clinically and bu ascendent phlebographu, and Histologically, AS well Differential-diagnosis: arterial aneurysms,

Thermography is a very instructive method of showing the interaction between direct changes in heat radiation of the surface of the skin and its relation to reflex processes. Short reflex arcs, such as the axon reflex, and long reflex arcs, such as the flush phenomenon provoked by visceral cutaneous reflexes, can be illustrated by thermography. Reflex changes in skin temperature by cooling the skin of patients with cold contact urticaria with the short-term development of large areas of warmed skin and also reflex changes in cholinergic urticaria after prior heating of such skin areas where th

Severe accidental hypothermia is a well-recognized risk in high altitude environments, where sudden weather changes, prolonged exposure to unstable temperatures, and limited medical access can rapidly become life threatening. In remote areas such as the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan, improvised rewarming techniques may be the only viable option until evacuation is possible. We report a case of a 32-y-old healthy male trekker who was found unresponsive by his companions at ∼4200 m in the Karakoram Range with a recorded axillary temperature of 27°C, measured using a portable low-reading t

BACKGROUND: Dehydrins (DHNs) protect plant cells from desiccation damage during environmental stress, and also participate in host resistance to various pathogens. In this study, we aimed to identify and characterize the DHN gene families from Vitis vinifera and wild V. yeshanensis, which is tolerant to both drought and cold, and moderately resistant to powdery mildew.
RESULTS: Four DHN genes were identified in both V. vinifera and V. yeshanensis, which shared a high sequence identity between the two species but little homology between the genes themselves. These genes were designated DHN1, D

Antarctic deep-sea ecosystems harboured unique and metabolically versatile micro-organisms that sustained key biogeochemical processes under extreme polar conditions. However, the genomic diversity and ecological functions of these sedimentary or deep-sea microbial communities remained largely unexplored. Here, we constructed a comprehensive deep-sea microbial dataset of the Antarctic Ocean (dsMDAO) by integrating three newly sequenced Prydz Bay sediment metagenomes with 22 publicly available datasets (9 seawater and 13 sediment samples), spanning water depths of ~300-3500 m. Frostbite is common in high-altitude regions, where low oxygen levels and the cold climate aggravate wound hypoxia and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, making frostbite lesions prone to becoming hard-to-heal wounds. Traditional hydrogel dressings remain unsatisfactory under such extreme conditions, as they lack freezing resistance, low-temperature adhesion, sustained oxygen release, and ROS-scavenging activity. Herein, we report a multifunctional hydrogel for the management of high-altitude frostbite wounds, formed from polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated CaO2 nanoparticles (CPO NPs), polyv

BACKGROUND: Extreme temperatures are projected to increase; however, comprehensive mapping of associations between temperature extremes and kidney diseases across age groups and disease subtypes remains limited.
METHODS: Data were collected for all emergency department (ED) visits for kidney diseases across all ages from South Korea's national health insurance claims between 2011 and 2019. A time-stratified case-crossover design was used to assess the association between ambient temperature and ED visits for kidney diseases.
RESULTS: The study included around 1.9 million ED visits due to kid

Desert lizards undergo hibernation (brumation) to survive extreme cold and food scarcity. This study investigated brumation-induced renal adaptations in four desert-dwelling species (Uromastyx aegyptia, Varanus griseus, Trapelus savignii, and Tarentola annularis) compared to their active states. Histological examination during brumation revealed kidney degeneration, including glomerulosclerosis, necrotic tubules, and cytoplasmic vacuolization. Morphometric analysis showed species‑specific renal changes during brumation; glomerular diameter significantly decreased in U. aegyptia as well as T. a…
