Manual federated simulation for multiple sclerosis integrating XGBoost algorithm with SHAP explanation.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system, underscoring the importance of early and accurate diagnosis. In this study investigates the predictive modelling of MS progression in patients with Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS), privacy-preserving for a federated and explainable Machine Learning (ML) framework. To address missing data while preserving inter-feature dependencies, Multivariate Imputation by Chained Equations (MICE) with iterative imputers was employed. Classification was performed using the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm.

An evaluation of Roluperidone as a promising repurposing candidate for Alzheimer's Disease: A Computational Investigation.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most dominant and prevalent form of dementia. The therapeutic agents for AD are not sufficient. Drug repurposing (i.e., also called drug repositioning or therapeutic switching of drugs) could contribute to adding novel therapeutic agents in AD discovery pipeline. Blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a crucial factor, for brain's diseases related drug discovery. Since, CNS active compounds have BBB crossing property, in this study this category of compounds was re-evaluated as repurposing potential candidate for AD by integrated machine learning algorithm, cheminformatic

Clinical risk assessment of serum creatinine abnormalities during vancomycin therapy: a retrospective study using machine learning models.

INTRODUCTION: Vancomycin is a widely used antibiotic for the treatment of serious Gram-positive bacterial infections. However, its clinical utility is often limited by the risk of nephrotoxicity, typically reflected by abnormalities in serum creatinine levels, which may indicate the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI). Timely identification of patients at increased risk is essential for early intervention and improved clinical outcomes. AIM: This study aimed to identify clinical risk factors associated with vancomycin-induced abnormalities in serum creatinine levels and to develop predict

Dense extreme inception network-based edge detection with deep reinforcement learning for object localization in an underwater environment.

The underwater environment is characterized by the vast expanses of water bodies such as seas, oceans, rivers, and lakes, together with their related ecosystems, that exist under the Earth's surface. This environment refers to unique physical properties such as pressure, buoyancy, light attenuation, and temperature, which bring about considerable adversity for observation and exploration. Object detection (OD) in the underwater environment includes the recognition and localization of different objects or entities submerged in the water. This object contains natural features like geological for

Listening to muscles: a machine learning approach to low-cost sarcopenia detection for older adults.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is characterized by progressive declines in skeletal muscle mass, strength, and quality, yet accessible and standardized methods for assessing intrinsic muscle quality in community settings remain limited. Advanced imaging and medical-grade instruments are costly and impractical for large-scale screening. We developed a low-cost, portable, and noninvasive acoustic device based on myophonogram principles to quantify muscle quality using machine learning regression models. METHODS: In this community-based study, individuals aged 65 years or older were recruited from five

Creating an autoencoder single summary metric to assess gait quality to compare surgical outcomes in children with cerebral palsy: The Shriners Gait Index (SGI).

Gait for individuals with movement disorders varies widely and the variability makes it difficult to assess outcomes of surgical and therapeutic interventions. Although specific joints can be assessed by fewer individual measures, gait depends on multiple parameters making an overall assessment metric difficult to determine. A holistic, summary measure can permit a standard comparison of progress throughout treatments and interventions, and permit more straightforward comparison across varied subjects. We propose a single summary metric (the Shriners Gait Index (SGI)) to represent the quality

Exploring the relationship between medications and heat-related community deaths during the 2021 heat dome: a hybrid approach using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Extreme heat events (EHEs) are a growing threat to health worldwide. To date, only a limited number of studies have evaluated medications as risk or protective factors for mortality during EHEs. METHODS: We explored the relationship between dispensed pharmaceuticals and heat-related community deaths using linked administrative health data and both logistic regression (LR) and machine learning (ML) models. We conducted a case-control study during the 2021 EHE in British Columbia, Canada, including 504 community deaths from heat exposure as cases and 2520 similar controls who surviv

Machine-learning-assisted ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy for low-level multi-component adulteration identification in Coptis chinensis.

Low-level adulteration of botanical ingredients is difficult to detect because weak adulterant signals are often masked by the dominant matrix spectrum. Here, Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy combined with machine learning was investigated for identification of low-level multi-component adulteration in Coptis chinensis. Scutellaria baicalensis, Rheum palmatum, and Curcuma longa were used as adulterants to construct 29 classes, including pure, single-, binary- and ternary-adulteration samples, at a fixed total adulterant content of 3 wt%. Twenty independently prepared samples were incl

Interpretable machine learning identifies chemical factors associated with deweathered ozone pollution in Suzhou, Yangtze River Delta.

Surface ozone is affected by both atmospheric chemistry and weather, making it difficult to identify the chemical factors related to ozone pollution from direct observations alone. Here we combined observations from 2015 to 2022 with interpretable machine learning to examine key chemical factors associated with deweathered surface ozone at an urban site in Suzhou, Yangtze River Delta. The Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm was used in two steps. First, a model based on meteorological variables was trained to reduce the influence of weather on observed O3. Second, deweathered O3 was

Explainable machine learning-based investigation for influential parameters towards interfacial capacity of spliced glass fiber reinforced polymer bars.

Splicing glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars is commonly encountered in practical applications due to limitations associated with rebar length. In turn, this affects the bond stress maintaining the equilibrium between concrete and reinforcement. Also, there is a lack of estimating the bond strength of spliced GFRP-reinforced beams employing machine learning approaches and interpreting the effective parameters. Thus, this paper predicts interfacial capacity of spliced GFRP-reinforced beams using machine learning (ML) models including ordinary least square regression (OLS), artificial neu

Development and validation of a machine learning-based claims frailty index for predicting mortality, disability, and healthcare utilization in middle-aged and older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Most existing claims-based frailty indices (CFIs) rely primarily on diagnostic codes, which may overlook functional status reflected in healthcare utilization. We therefore developed and externally validated a machine learning-based CFI integrating diagnoses, medications, and procedures in older adults. METHODS: This cohort study linked the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (TLSA) with the National Health Insurance Research Database, including participants aged ≥50 years. The TLSA survey-based frailty index (SFI) served as the reference standard. The 2011 cohort (n = 3727) was us
