A 6-year-old boy diagnosed with congenital microphthalmic OS was referred for prosthetic eye fitting. He was otherwise healthy without known congenital anomalies. His visual acuity was 20/20 in the OD and no light perception in the OS. His disfigured OS with a conjunctivalized opaque cornea appeared smaller than his OD. He had left esotropia with severely restricted ductions in all directions of gaze. The preoperative orbital MRI of the patient revealed a small orbital cyst posteroinferior to the OS. Because the patient could not tolerate the prosthetic eye worn over his disfigured eye, evisce

We report a case of choroidal melanoma with features suggestive of orbital cellulitis. A 24-year-old Asian Indian male presented with a 20-day history of sudden loss of vision in the right eye. Edematous eyelids with complete mechanical ptosis, complete ophthalmoplegia, gross proptosis accompanied by massive chemosis, and prolapse of the inferior forniceal conjunctiva were noted. He denied perception of light in the right eye. The left eye was unremarkable. B-scan ultrasonography of the right eye showed a large dome-shaped mass filling the posterior segment suggestive of choroidal melanoma. Co

The authors report a case of congenital bilateral corneal opacities in which one of the eyes was enucleated because of malignant glaucoma and corneal perforation. Corneal defects and iridocorneal adhesion were found, but aphakia was the major pathologic ocular finding. The clinical picture and pathology study indicated this case as a Peters' anomaly presenting congenital aphakia.

PURPOSE: Local treatment of uveal melanoma by radiotherapy involves the use of brachytherapy with radioactive plaques attached to the sclera, or proton irradiation. Both treatments induce growth arrest within the tumour and its slow involution over several years. Although ocular retention rates are excellent, regrowth of tumours due to resistance and neovascular glaucoma leads to enucleation of up to 10% of affected eyes. Proton irradiation involves part of the iris in most cases and we noticed that neovascularisation only occurred in the part of the iris that was not irradiated. We therefore

Complete globe extrusion, whether traumatic or spontaneous, is a rare clinical entity and if associated with optic nerve avulsion, it has a worse visual outcome, though repositioning of the globe may be attempted. We report a case of road traffic accident, wherein the patient presented with an extrusion of the globe, along with a complete transection of the optic nerve, about 4 cm from the optic nerve head, with only a residual attachment to the orbital rim via the unsevered lateral conjunctival flap, where the enucleation was completed and the conjunctiva was sutured.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report a case of Clostridium perfringens keratitis, which led rapidly to panophthalmitis, with loss of the eye in a healthy patient.
METHODS: Clinicopathologic case report, with a brief review of the literature. An otherwise healthy 50-year-old man without known risk factors developed a corneal ulcer, and within 48 hours, he lost all vision, with corneal perforation and panophthalmitis. The eye was enucleated, and the globe was examined histopathologically.
RESULTS: The cornea was sampled for Gram staining and cultures, which revealed gram-positive r

Various alloplastic orbital implants, preferably with a spherical configuration, are employed for the routine care of an enucleated socket. Alternately, an autologous dermis-fat graft can also be used. It represents a safe alternative to alloplastic orbital implants. The method does not require preserved sclera, thus excluding even theoretically possible transfer of pathogens such as viruses or prions in sclera preserved in alcohol. Loss of the transplant or other serious complications were only very rarely observed, late extrusion is unknown. Due to its high degree of safety concurrent with e

Myiasis; a term first introduced by HOPE refers to invasion of living tissue of humans and other mammals by the eggs or larvae of flies of the order of Diptera. Orbital involvement occurs in approximately 5% of all cases of myiasis. A 72 year old patient is presented with orbital myiasis that was successfully treated by enucleation and grafted with split thickness of skin.

AIMS: The study was set up to evaluate the effect of microwave cyclodestruction on human eyes.
METHODS: Two human eyes were studied. For treatment a horn shaped 5.8 GHz microwave applicator and fibre optic thermometry were used. Just before enucleation, the rectangular (2 x 3 mm) microwave aperture was placed onto the conjunctiva at a position 1-2 mm posterior to the corneal scleral limbus. Each of three to four treatment spots was targeted to receive a thermal dose of 54 degrees C for 1 minute. Clinical, gross, and histopathological evaluations were performed.
RESULTS: Clinical evaluations

Cryptococcosis is a rare form of human ocular infection, usually occurring in immunocompromised patients. Unilateral or bilateral posterior segment involvement is the rule. The authors describe a unique case of intraocular cryptococcosis presenting as an iris inflammatory mass in a patient with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Diagnosis was established by anterior chamber paracentesis and confirmed by histopathologic examination of the enucleated eye.

We investigated the effect of neonatal monocular enucleation on the pattern of interhemispheric connections through the corpus callosum in occipital cortex of pigmented and albino rats. Callosal connections were revealed in tangential sections through the flattened cortex following multiple injections of horseradish peroxidase into the opposite hemisphere. In pigmented rats, we found that monocular enucleation induces the development of an anomalous band-like accumulation of callosal connections in middle portions of striate cortex in the hemisphere ipsilateral to the remaining eye, as reporte

A 28-year-old male presented to the emergency room suffering an ocular burn injury from a welding rod. Given the mechanism of injury, severe delayed injury of the ocular adnexa occurred, requiring enucleation, partial exenteration of the superior orbit, and extensive reconstruction. Histopathology of the affected tissue was analyzed. This is the first report that details the clinical course of a patient with delayed high amperage and low voltage electrical burn injury.
