Association of Pseudomonas and Serratia corneal ulcers with use of contaminated solutions.

The wetting and soaking solutions and contact lens cases of eye clinic patients commonly were contaminated with gram-negative bacteria during their use. Serratia marcescens occurred most frequently in preserved solutions, whereas Pseudomonas aeruginosa was most often recovered from home-prepared saline. The bacteria were recovered at densities of greater than 10(6) cells per ml and typically persisted in the solutions. Eight patients who developed bacterial keratitis during 1986 used solutions contaminated with the etiological agents of the infections. Improper hygienic practices of the patien

Simultaneous ocular and systemic cysticercosis and tuberculosis.

Human cysticercosis and tuberculosis are endemic diseases in developing countries. Both these diseases have certain common factors of origin. We would like to present the co-existence of these infections in a 20-year-old female. She was a known case of pulmonary and ocular tuberculosis and she acquired cysticercosis of the eye and brain.

A complex case of bacterial pericarditis caused by a new pathogenic agent.

Dermabacter hominis is a gram-positive facultative anaerobic agent. It is a human skin colonizer that can be responsible for opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. To date, the infections caused by this agent are related to bone, joint, eye, peritoneal dialysis catheters, abscesses or infected vascular grafts. Overall, it has a favorable outcome with good response to vancomycin, teicoplanin or linezolide, and so it has not been considered a concerning pathogenic agent. We present the first case in scientific literature with isolation of D. hominis in pericardial fluid in the s

A case report of Penicillium chorioretinitis in a Border Collie dog.

Systemic fungal pathogens typically gain entry through a single portal and disseminate to affect multiple body systems. Infections caused by fungal Penicillium species are rare in dogs, and these cases have a poor prognosis. An unknown Penicillium species was isolated from the right eye of a middle-aged Border Collie without evidence of systemic disease. Due to financial limitations, an extensive diagnostic evaluation could not be performed. Histopathology alone failed to identify the specific causative agent; however, fungal culture on aqueous humor provided the definitive diagnosis. This cas

A case report on 'fortuitous diagnosis of ocular cysticercosis in a case of unrelated eye injury'.

INTRODUCTION: Cysticercosis, a parasitic infection caused by Taenia solium, is often contracted through the consumption of contaminated undercooked vegetables, pork, or beef. Ocular involvement, although rare, can have severe consequences if untreated. This case report highlights the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment of ocular cysticercosis. CASE DISCUSSION: This case report presents a case of a 40-year-old male who presented with redness and a white structure in his right eye following self-removal of a foreign body. A history of pork consumption was noted. Slit lamp examination r

Adenocarcinoma of retinal pigment epithelium arising from a juxtapapillary histoplasmosis scar.

A 66-year-old woman underwent a transocular fine-needle aspiration biopsy for an enlarging mass arising from a juxtapapillary histoplasmosis scar in the left eye. The cytologic study revealed pigmented malignant cells, suggesting that the lesion was either a malignant choroidal melanoma or an adenocarcinoma of the retinal pigment epithelium. The eye was enucleated and histopathologic studies revealed findings suggestive of an adenocarcinoma of the retinal pigment epithelium. Immunohistochemical stains were positive for cytokeratin and were negative for melanoma-specific antigen, supporting an

Hand hygiene and instrument sanitization in ophthalmology clinics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the various challenges in infection control in eye clinics and successful measures taken to prevent nosocomial infections. RECENT FINDINGS: The Center for Disease Control recommends hand-washing when hands are visibly soiled, and after direct contact with patients, and inanimate objects such as medical equipment. Published studies have identified poor hygiene in clinical settings as a major cause of nosocomial outbreaks, particularly in cases of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). Some studies of EKC outbreaks are able to support direct observation of

Climate Change and the Impact on Ocular Infectious Diseases: A Narrative Review.

Climate change and global warming significantly affect the incidence and distribution of infectious ocular diseases. This narrative review explores how climate-related factors-including extreme weather events, precipitation, temperature fluctuations, humidity, wind patterns, ultraviolet radiation, and air pollution-can directly and indirectly influence the burden of ocular infections. By synthesizing evidence from the published literature, we examine how these environmental variables impact disease mechanisms such as pathogen survival, transmission dynamics, and host susceptibility. Increased

Antifungal drug ciclopirox olamine reduces HSV-1 replication and disease in mice.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 and HSV-2 cause painful blisters and shallow ulcers in exposed skin and mucosae during primary or recurrent infection. In addition, recurrent and potentially blinding HSV-1 infections of the eye afflict nearly half a million persons in the U.S. Current clinical therapies rely on nucleoside analog drugs such as acyclovir (ACV) or ganciclovir to ameliorate primary infections and reduce the frequency and duration of reactivations. However, these treatments do not fully suppress viral shedding and drug-resistant mutants develop in the eye and in vulnerable, immunosuppr

Bacterial infection and trachoma in the gambia: a case control study.

PURPOSE: Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Conjunctival scarring is initiated by recurrent Chlamydia trachomatis infection. However, disease progression to trichiasis occurs even in regions where chlamydial prevalence is currently low, which suggests that other factors, for example other bacterial infection, may also drive inflammation and scarring, particularly in the late stages of trachoma. This study was undertaken to investigate whether trachomatous trichiasis or conjunctival scarring are associated with increased prevalence of bacterial infection. METHODS:

Association of TREM-1, IL-1β, IL-33/ST2, and TLR Expressions With the Pathogenesis of Ocular Toxoplasmosis in Mouse Models on Different Genetic Backgrounds.

Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is one of the most common causes of posterior uveitis. The signaling of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREM)-1 amplifies inflammation, whereas TREM-2 signaling is anti-inflammatory. IL-1β is a major driver of inflammation during infection. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play important roles in protective immune response during Toxoplasma gondii infection, and interleukin (IL)-33 receptor (T1/ST2) signaling prevents toxoplasmic encephalitis in mice. However, the pathogenic mechanisms of OT are not yet well elucidated. To investigate the role of TREM-1, TRE

Ocular infection caused by Hormographiella aspergillata: A case report and review of literature.

Hormographiella aspergillata, a basidiomycete is a rare cause of human infection. We report a case of 70-year-old female with corneal ulcer and endophthalmitis caused by this agent. The patient had an intraocular implantation of lens following a cataract surgery. Corneal tissue obtained during therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty showed presence of septate hyphae on microscopy and culture grew H. aspergillata which was confirmed by sequencing of ITS region. Patient was started on systemic voriconazole and topical natamycin, however the eye could not be salvaged. To our knowledge, this is the f
