Revealed masks: Facial mimicry after oxytocin administration in forensic psychopathic patients.

Facial mimicry serves as an evolutionarily rooted important interpersonal communication process that touches on the concepts of socialization and empathy. Facial electromyography (EMG) of the corrugator muscle and the zygomaticus muscle was recorded while male forensic psychopathic patients and controls watched morphed angry or happy facial expressions. We tested the hypothesis that psychopathic patients would show weaker short latency facial mimicry (that is, within 600 ms after stimulus onset) than controls. Exclusively in the group of 20 psychopathic patients, we tested in a placebo-control

Congenital cataract facial dysmorphism neuropathy syndrome: a clinically recognizable entity.

Congenital cataracts facial dysmorphism neuropathy syndrome is a recently delineated autosomal recessive condition exclusively found in the Gypsy population. Congenital cataracts facial dysmorphism neuropathy syndrome is caused by a homozygous mutation in the CTDP1 gene, leading to disruption of the ribonucleic acid transcription machinery. This report presents a young Gypsy female affected by this rare disorder. Electromyography and sural nerve histology were in accordance with a hypomyelinating neuropathy. After clinical recognition of congenital cataracts facial dysmorphism neuropathy syndr

Neural evidence for the influence of cognitive control by facial emotion under varying task difficulty in individuals with borderline personality disorder traits.

Borderline personality disorder traits (BPD traits) represent subclinical characteristics associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD), which are marked by impaired cognitive control of emotion processing. Although the cognitive control deficit of negative emotions is a core feature of BPD, the characteristics and neural basis of this deficit in non-clinical BPD traits individuals remain unclear. The present study employed a novel facial majority function task (fMFT) combined with event-related potential (ERP) recording to explore the cognitive control of negative facial emotion under

The Social Iowa Gambling Task: a promising tool for assessing deception detection in real-world contexts in adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: Deception detection represents a complex form of social decision making under uncertainty with real-world consequences. Yet reliable tools to identify vulnerability to fraud and exploitation, marked by large individual variability, particularly among older adults, remain limited. Using a short, scalable laboratory task, the Social Iowa Gambling Task (sIGT), we tested whether adaptive social decision making predicts interpersonal and technologically mediated deception detection. METHODS: Younger and older adults from a single cohort (Lie Task: N = 153; Deepfake Task: N = 149) compl

Cognitive load modulates the effects of social contexts on facial expression processing.

Emotion perception mostly occurs in social contexts where people engage in emotional communication. Research has revealed that contextual faces affect facial expression perception through 2 distinct ways: congruence and functional relation. However, their robustness under varying levels of cognitive load remains unclear. Thus, this study utilized event-related potentials to explore how cognitive load modulated these effects in facial expression processing. Participants performed a facial expression recognition task under different cognitive load conditions, identifying the emotional expression

Demonstration of impaired facial emotion perception in temporal lobe epilepsy by theta responses in EEG.

OBJECTIVE: Temporale lobe and occipito-temporal cortical areas play an important role in facial emotion perception (FEP). FEP might be represented by event-related brain oscillations. In patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), impairment of FEP was shown with behavioral and functional neuroimaging (FMRI, PET, MEG) but not event-related oscillations, which is a well known method for cognitive research studies. The present study aims to explore FEP by analyzing EEG event-related theta oscillations in patients with TLE. METHODS: 21 patients with TLE and 19 healthy volunteers were included. D

Impulsive adolescents exhibit inefficient processing and a low decision threshold when decoding facial expressions of emotions.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a debilitating psychiatric illness whose symptoms frequently emerge during adolescence. Critically, self-injury and suicide attempts in BPD are often precipitated by interpersonal discord. Initial studies in adults suggest that the interpersonal difficulties common in BPD may emerge from disrupted processing of socioemotional stimuli. Less is known about these processes in adolescents with BPD symptoms, despite substantial changes in socioemotional processing during this developmental period. METHODS: Eighty-six adolescents and young adults

Disentangling large-scale brain dynamics and their links to behavior during the emotional face matching task.

Emotion processing engages multiple large-scale brain networks. However, prior investigations relying on a priori, contrast-based models of brain activity obscure networks' distinct temporal dynamics and roles in task performance. Here, we performed tensor independent component analysis to identify and track concurrent brain processes, including those with non-canonical dynamics, during the emotional face matching task (EFMT) in healthy young adults (n = 413; n = 416 replication). Ten EFMT-recruited large-scale brain networks were identified, reflecting flexible recoupling of visual associatio

The effect of working memory load on selective attention towards threatening faces in socially anxious individuals: Behavioural and electrophysiological evidence.

Cognitive models of anxiety propose that attention bias towards threat causes and maintains anxiety symptoms. However, the effect of working memory (WM) load on selective attention of threatening faces in individuals with socially anxious symptoms and the electrophysiological correlates are unclear. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 30 socially anxious participants and 32 controls during an adapted emotional flanker task. Overall, socially anxious individuals showed worse accuracy and slower reaction times (RTs) in facial emotion recognition than controls. Furthermore, under h

Altered effective connectivity of emotion perception and regulation networks during an emotional face perception task in adults with alcohol use disorder.

Impairments in emotional regulation and mood symptoms are interrelated and associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) risk, but the underlying aberrant neural circuitry involved is poorly understood. In the present study, we examined alterations in effective (directional) connectivity (EC) during emotional face processing in individuals with and without AUD. We utilized functional MRI data from the Human Connectome Project obtained during an emotional face processing task in 70 participants with AUD and 70 controls (CON). Focusing on ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC), bilateral ventrolate

Happy and angry facial expressions are processed independently of task demands and semantic context congruency in the first stages of vision - A mass univariate ERP analysis.

Neural decoding of others' facial expressions is critical in social interactions and has been investigated using scalp event related potentials (ERPs). However, the impact of task and emotional context congruency on this neural decoding is unclear. Previous ERP studies employed classic statistical analyses that only focused on specific electrodes and time points, which inflates type I and type II errors. The present study re-analyzed the study by Aguado et al. (2019) using robust data-driven Mass Univariate Statistics across every time point and electrode and rejected trials with early reactio

The Impact of Social Stress on Trustworthiness Judgments in Schizophrenia.

The present study examines the impact of induced social stress on facial trustworthiness judgments in individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ) and the associations between symptoms and trustworthiness ratings. Thirty-three individuals with SCZ and forty healthy controls (HC) were asked to rate the trustworthiness of 24 digitally morphed faces in two counterbalanced conditions. Mild social stress was induced by listening to loud noises from a busy street. BPRS, CAPE-42, and the Paranoia Scale measured the severity of symptoms. We did not observe significant differences in trustworthiness judgments

Let's face it! The role of social anxiety and executive functions in recognizing others' emotions from faces: Evidence from autism and specific learning disorders.

Youth with different developmental disorders might experience challenges when dealing with facial emotion recognition (FER). By comparing FER and related emotional and cognitive factors across developmental disorders, researchers can gain a better understanding of challenges and strengths associated with each condition. The aim of the present study was to investigate how social anxiety and executive functioning might underlie FER in youth with and without autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and specific learning disorders (SLD). The study involved 263 children and adolescents between 8 and 16 year

Anxiety symptoms are differentially associated with facial expression processing in boys and girls.

Facial expressions convey important social information and can initiate behavioral change through the processing and understanding of emotions. However, while this ability is known to evolve throughout development, it remains unclear whether this ability differs between girls and boys or how other variables such as level of anxiety can modulate it. Furthermore, understanding the underlying neural mechanisms of facial expression processing and how they are linked by sex and anxiety during development is essential, as alterations in this processing have been associated with psychiatric disorders

The emotional face of anorexia nervosa: The neural correlates of emotional processing.

Social-emotional processing difficulties have been reported in Anorexia Nervosa (AN), yet the neural correlates remain unclear. Previous neuroimaging work is sparse and has not used functional connectivity paradigms to more fully explore the neural correlates of emotional difficulties. Fifty-seven acutely unwell AN (AAN) women, 60 weight-recovered AN (WR) women and 69 healthy control (HC) women categorised the gender of a series of emotional faces while undergoing Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The mean age of the AAN group was 19.40 (2.83), WR 18.37 (3.59) and HC 19.37 (3.36). A whole

The effects of early institutionalization on emotional face processing: evidence for sparing via an experience-dependent mechanism.

Early psychosocial deprivation has profound adverse effects on children's brain and behavioural development, including abnormalities in physical growth, intellectual function, social cognition, and emotional development. Nevertheless, the domain of emotional face processing has appeared in previous research to be relatively spared; here, we test for possible sleeper effects emerging in early adolescence. This study employed event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the neural correlates of facial emotion processing in 12-year-old children who took part in a randomized controlled trial of fost

Cosmetic appreciation of lateralization of peripheral facial palsy: 'preference for left or right, true or mirror image?'.

There have been several studies in the past depicting asymmetry in 'normal' human faces. Evidence supports the fact that the right hemisphere is superior in the recognition of emotions expressed by the human face and indicates a right hemispheric specialization for processing emotional information. The primary aim of this study is to determine whether there is a difference in cosmetic appreciation of a left peripheral facial palsy compared to a right peripheral facial palsy? Pictures of patients with a facial palsy with House-Brackmann II-VI were reversed as a mirror image and offered as a pai

Facial memory ability and self-awareness in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy after anterior temporal lobectomy.

Anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) is the most common surgical treatment for drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Right ATL has been reported to reduce facial memory ability in patients with TLE, as indicated by poor performance on the Warrington Recognition Memory Test for Faces (RMF), which is commonly used to evaluate visual memory in these patients. However, little is known about whether patients with TLE exhibit difficulties in identifying faces in daily life after ATL. The aim of this study was to investigate facial memory ability and self-awareness of face identification difficul

Social skills training for children with autism spectrum disorder using a robotic behavioral intervention system.

We designed a robot system that assisted in behavioral intervention programs of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The eight-session intervention program was based on the discrete trial teaching protocol and focused on two basic social skills: eye contact and facial emotion recognition. The robotic interactions occurred in four modules: training element query, recognition of human activity, coping-mode selection, and follow-up action. Children with ASD who were between 4 and 7 years old and who had verbal IQ ≥ 60 were recruited and randomly assigned to the treatment group (TG, n = 8
