Concept Analysis: Challenge Coins as a Caring Support Tool to Prevent Farmer Suicide.

OBJECTIVES: Challenge coins have a history in the military as symbolic tokens of belonging and appreciation. Members of some agricultural communities have recently expressed interest in using a challenge coin as a caring support tool to improve mental health among farmers. The objective of this analysis is to clarify the meaning and use of a challenge coin as an upstream suicide prevention caring support tool in agricultural communities. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in Google Scholar, PsycInfo, Sociological Abstracts, Web of Science, and PubMed following PRISMA guidelines, ident…

Pharma to farmer: field challenges of optimizing trypanocide use in African animal trypanosomiasis.

Trypanocides are a key control component of African animal trypanosomiasis (AAT) in tsetse-infested areas of sub-Saharan Africa. While farmers are dependent upon trypanocides, recent research highlights their inappropriate and ineffective use, problems with drug quality, and treatment failure. There are currently gaps in knowledge and investment in inexpensive AAT diagnostics, understanding of drug resistance, and the effective use of trypanocides in the field. Without this important knowledge it is difficult to develop best practice and policy for existing drugs or to inform development and u…

The presence of dehydration in paddy farmers in an area with chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology.

AIM: Kidney disease of unknown aetiology (CKDu) has been a health problem in the rural farming community of the North Central province of Sri Lanka since the 1990s and various environmental factors have been postulated as contributing factors for this disease. The aim of our study was to find out whether farmers undergo dehydration which would lead to concentration of urine and the water soluble potentially toxic substance in the kidney, leading to damage of the renal tubules. Therefore, we studied a sample of healthy farmers who were CKDu-free to determine whether they were dehydrated. METHO…

Farmer Perceptions of Pig Aggression Compared to Animal-Based Measures of Fight Outcome.

Several animal welfare issues persist in practice despite extensive research which has been linked to the unwillingness of stakeholders to make changes. For example, most farmers do not perceive pig aggression to be a problem that requires action despite the fact that stress and injuries are common, and that several solutions exist. Frequent exposure to animal suffering could affect farmer responses to distressed animals. This study investigated for the first time whether this occurs, using pig aggression as a focus. Using video clips, 90 pig farmers judged the severity of aggression, level of…

Bovine brucellosis in Pakistan; an analysis of engagement with risk factors in smallholder farmer settings.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the seroprevalence of bovine brucellosis in smallholder farms in seven regions in Pakistan, identify herd and individual level risk factors for seropositivity and assess the level of engagement of farmers with risk factors. In total, 1063 cattle and buffalo belonging to 420 herds in seven districts were sampled. The Rose Bengal test (RBT), indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA) and competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (C-ELISA) were used for the serological diagnosis of bovine brucellosis on all the serum samples. The ass…

[Prolonged disease in a farmer with simultaneous Q fever pneumonia and subacute hypersensitivity pneumonitis].

This case report describes the first incident of a patient with simultaneous occurrence of Q fever pneumonia and subacute hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). The 52-year-old patient was from his occupation as a farmer exposed to agents causing both diseases. Except for a weight loss in subacute/chronic incidents of HP the symptoms of Q fever and HP are similar. However, differences in CT findings and histopathology make it possible to differentiate between the two diseases. This report highlights the importance of a thorough occupational history.

[Cattle farmers' perception of the nuisances caused by insects and ticks to cattle in the Canton Jura].

During summer 2005, a survey of 172 farmers from the Canton Jura was carried out to determine their perception of the nuisances caused by insects and ticks to cattle. The presence of ticks was significantly more often spontaneously mentioned by farmers in the Clos-du-Doubs and in the district of Delémont (95% and 72%, respectively) than in Ajoie and in the Franches-Montagnes (29% and 19%, respectively, p < 0.0001). 20% of the farmers perceived the tick populations to be increasing. The following diseases were spontaneously listed: keratoconjunctivitis (59%), mastitis related to flies (31%), hy…

Recovery of pulmonary function in farmer's lung. A five-year follow-up study.

The recovery of pulmonary function in farmer's lung (FL) was studied during a 5-yr follow-up in 101 patients (20 men and 81 women, mean age 47 yr). At the initial evaluation all patients had the first diagnosed attack of FL. Spirometry, measurement of pulmonary diffusing capacity, and arterial blood gas analysis were done at the time of the diagnosis and 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months thereafter. The last follow-up measurements were made 4 to 6 yr after the initial evaluation. Mean FVC improved significantly for up to 1 yr. In mean DLCO there was improvement for up to 2 yr. Mean PaO2 rose to its m

[Experimental and clinical studies on the pathogenicity of extracellular proteinases of Streptomyces thermohygroscopicus in farmer's lung].

Streptomyces thermohygroscopicus is a thermoactinomycetes which has been found recently to be related to farmer's lung in China. In the present study, a model of acute farmer's lung was successfully developed with extracellular proteinases of streptomyces thermohygroscopicus (EPST) in the rabbit, and the precipitating antibodies against EPST were detected in the sera from the patients with farmer's lung or bagassosis. Lack of cross reactivity was also showed between EPST, T. vulgaris antigen, and M. faeni antigen.

Dot-immunobinding assay in the detection of IgG antibodies against farmer's lung antigens.

Circulating antibodies against Faenia rectivirgula, Thermoactinomyces candidus, T. vulgaris and Aspergillus fumigatus were studied in the sera of 14 clinically proven farmer's lung patients and 10 normal controls using three immunological methods. These methods were agar gel double diffusion (DD), biotin-avidin-linked immunosorbent assay (BALISA) and dot-immunobinding assay (DIBA). Agar gel diffusion, the least sensitive of the three methods, failed to detect antibodies in some of the patients, while BALISA detected antibodies even in the normal controls. However, the sensitivity of dot-immuno

A partially purified antigen from Faenia rectivirgula in the diagnosis of farmer's lung disease.

An antigen fraction from Faenia rectivirgula (Micropolyspora faeni) having diagnostic significance for farmer's lung disease was isolated by Sephadex G-200 and G-100 fractionations. Antibody raised against this antigen fraction was used to make an immunoaffinity column to purify crude culture filtrate antigens of F. rectivirgula. The antigen has a molecular weight of 66,000 and an isoelectric point between pH 6.0 and 6.5. The yield of this antigen fraction was 1.02% of the total protein of the crude antigen. Although the crude antigen showed activity for several enzymes, the purified antigen s

Detection of relevant farmer's lung antigens by using immunoblots of two-dimensional electrophoresis.

Crude antigenic extract from Faenia rectivirgula (Micropolyspora faeni), the most commonly implicated organism in farmer's lung disease, was subjected to two-dimensional electrophoresis. The antigenic components resolved by this method were electrophoretically transferred to nitrocellulose sheets. These bound antigens were allowed to react with sera from farmer's lung patients and individuals exposed to farming environments. The antigen-antibody reaction was visualized by a sandwich method employing a biotin-avidin system and peroxidase staining. Patients' sera demonstrated eight to 29 spots o
