Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli and Their Antibiotic Resistance Patterns in Dairy Farms and Their Microbial Ecosystems.

Ruminants are the largest reservoir for all types of Escherichia coli, including the pathogenic ones, which can potentially be transmitted to humans via the food chain and environment. A longitudinal study was performed to estimate the prevalence and antibiotic-resistant pattern of pathogenic E. coli (pE.coli) strains in dairy farm environments. A total of 846 environmental samples (water, lagoon slurry, bedding, feed, feces, soil, and compost) were collected in summer over two years from five dairy farms in Maryland, USA. An additional 40 soil samples were collected in winter and summer seaso…

Polymorphisms in Pattern Recognition Receptor Genes Are Associated with Respiratory Disease Severity in Pig Farms.

Reduced productivity caused by infections, particularly respiratory diseases, is a serious problem in pig farming. We have previously reported polymorphisms in porcine pattern recognition receptor genes affecting molecular functions and demonstrated that the 2197A/C polymorphism in the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain containing 2 (NOD2) gene influences porcine circovirus 2-induced mortality. Here, we investigated how these polymorphisms affect respiratory disease-induced lesions, using samples from a slaughterhouse dealing with pigs from two farms. Lung lesions were evaluated using t…

Recent innovations in various methods of harmful gases conversion and its mechanism in poultry farms.

Poultry breeding takes place in intensive, high-production systems characterized by high animal density, which is a source of harmful emission of odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and greenhouse gases, which in turn sustain animal welfare. This study identified and examined the characteristics of chemical compounds emitted in intensive poultry farming (laying hens, broilers) and their toxicity, which led to recommending methods of deodorization. Emphasis was placed on the law relative to air purification in poultry farms. Various methods of air tr…

Seroprevalence and Molecular Characterization of Leptospira spp. in Rats Captured near Pig Farms in Colombia.

Gram-negative spirochete Leptospira spp. causes leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is still a neglected disease, even though it can cause potentially fatal infections in a variety of species including humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in pig farm captured rodents and characterize the isolated samples. Rats were captured, sampled, and euthanized in the vicinity of pig farms to obtain serum for microagglutination tests (MAT) and kidney tissues for PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA and LipL32 genes. A fraction of the 16S rRNA PCR product was sequence…

Tracking high-risk β-lactamase gene (bla gene) transfers in two Chinese intensive dairy farms.

Extended-spectrum β-lactam antibiotics are critically important antibiotics for humans, but their use in food-animals poses a potential threat for public health. This paper addressed the occurrence of high-risk β-lactamase genes (bla genes) in intensive dairy farms, and assessed the effects of different waste treatment technologies at dairies on the propagation and dissemination of bla genes. Results showed that ESBL genes (blaTEM-1, blaOXA-1), ampC β-lactamase genes (blaampC) and carbapenemase genes (blaGES-1, blaNDM) were prevalent in dairy cow waste, and even prevailed through each processi…

Research Note: Prevalence and molecular characteristics of Clostridium perfringens in "no antibiotics ever" broiler farms.

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is the etiological agent of necrotic enteritis and gangrenous dermatitis; 2 diseases that cause significant economic and welfare concerns to the broiler industry. Previously, Clostridium-related diseases were managed with the use of antimicrobial growth promoters fed to broilers that improved gut health and performance. The recent shift to no antibiotics ever (NAE) production has increased the incidence of Clostridium-related diseases. The objective of this study was to identify C. perfringens prevalence and toxinotypes in NAE farms. Samples of litter, …

Prevalence of mycoplasma-like lung lesions in pigs from commercial farms from Spain and Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae causes a chronic respiratory disease that produces important economic losses due to poor productive performance, increased mortality and costs for several control strategies. The prevalence of mycoplasma-like lesions (MLL) at abattoir has been widely studied in different countries, making use of different scoring systems. However, most of them are difficult to apply in abattoirs with high number of pigs sacrificed per hour. For that reason, it is necessary to adapt the scoring system to the reality of the modern abattoir, even if there is a loss of accuracy

Characterization of the fecal microbiota of sows and their offspring from German commercial pig farms.

Strategies to combat microbiota-associated health problems are of high interest in pig production. Successful intervention strategies with beneficial long-term effects are still missing. Most studies on pig microbiota have been conducted under standardized experimental conditions, but the situation in commercial farms differs dramatically. This study describes the fecal microbiota in German commercial pig farms under practical conditions. The study is part of the larger project "Optibiom" that aims to use bacterial composition and farm metadata to formulate tailor-made solutions for farm-speci…

Probability of Rhipicephalus microplus introduction into farms by cattle movement using a Bayesian Belief Network.

Attempts to eliminate Rhipicephalus microplus from Uruguay have been unsuccessful, and, currently, the country is divided into two areas: a tick-free area and a tick-infested area. In the tick-infested area, different farms face different situations. Some farms are in regions where, due to environmental conditions or a lack of infrastructure, it is difficult to eliminate R. microplus, and the only option is to control it. In contrast, other farms can attempt complete removal. Before deciding whether a farmer should attempt to eliminate R. microplus, the probability of reintroduction must be ev…

Antimicrobial usage on 72 farrow-to-finish pig farms in Japan from 2015 to 2017.

In Japan veterinary antimicrobials are used most in the pig production sector. However, there is a paucity of data on the quantity of antimicrobials used on pig farms in Japan. This study describes antimicrobial use on Japanese pig farms in 2015, 2016 and 2017 in terms of mg of active ingredient per kg of PCU (population correction unit). Data on antimicrobial use from a total of 72 farrow-to finish farms over these three years were used in the study. The results revealed that the average use of antimicrobials in 2015, 2016 and 2017 was 304.8 (SD = 226.3), 311.2 (SD = 241.0) and 342.9 (SD = 29…
