Necrotizing fasciitis: a rare complication of total hip replacement.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, but life-threatening emergency. We report a case history of necrotizing fasciitis in a previously healthy woman. A review of the literature suggests that this is the first report of necrotizing fasciitis complicating total hip replacement surgery.

[Necrotizing fasciitis after laparoscopic adhesion surgery. A clinical case].

A case of a fulminating necrotizing cellulitis after a laparoscopic adhesiolysis performed for ileal obstructive disease, is presented. During operation, a very little intestinal perforation was caused by an "atraumatic grasper", and intestinal fluid flooded into the peritoneum; the lesion was sutured. A copious peritoneal lavage was performed and the operation ended by positioning a peritoneal drain. The patient was going well, passing flatus on the second postoperative day; on the fourth postoperative day erythematous edema close one of the trocar wound appeared. In spite of an aggressive me

Necrotizing fasciitis: unreliable MRI findings in the preoperative diagnosis.

The authors present two cases of necrotizing fasciitis (NF), one case of dermatomyositis and one case of posttraumatic muscle injury, which have similar magnetic resonance imaging findings in terms of skin, subcutaneous fat, superficial and deep fasciae and muscle involvement. These cases highlight the need for cautious interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, for they are nonspecific and the preoperative decision should be based mostly on the evolution of the clinical status.

Necrotizing fasciitis after peritonsillar abscess in an immunocompetent patient.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a rapidly progressive, severe bacterial infection of the fascial planes of the head and neck. Group A beta haemolytic Streptococcus spp. (GABHS), Staphylococcus spp., or obligatory anaerobic bacteria are the most common causative pathogens. The disease usually results from a dental source or facial trauma. Extensive fascial necrosis and severe systemic toxicity are common manifestations of CNF. Review of the literature reveals only seven such cases, with four successful outcomes. The authors present the case of a 50-year-old immunocompetent female with C

Retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis in a 4-year-old girl.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but serious condition with a poor prognosis both in adults and in children. Retroperitoneal localization is mostly associated with fatal outcome. Early diagnosis, extensive and repeated surgical debridement, and use of antibiotics are necessary. Herein the authors report on a 4-year-old girl in whom retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis developed after she suffered from pyelonephritis. In this case, the outcome was favorable because of early surgical intervention, confirming the diagnosis.

Necrotizing fasciitis--an unusual presentation of miliary mycobacterium tuberculosis.

We report an immunocompromised patient who presented with necrotizing fasciitis as the initial presentation of miliary tuberculosis. The diagnosis of miliary tuberculosis was delayed resulting in prolonged morbidity and hospital stay. The lesson from this report is that tuberculosis should be recognised as an uncommon cause of necrotizing fasciitis in an immunocompromised patient, especially if the response to prompt and standard initial treatment is unsatisfactory.

Necrotizing fasciitis: early recognition and aggressive treatment remain important.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an infection caused by aerobic or anaerobic microorganisms that rapidly spread along the fascial plane, causing necrosis of the fascia, overlying skin, and vasculature. Septicemia and systemic toxic effects may lead to death within as short a time as 24 to 96 hours. Successful treatment, comprising radical surgical debridement, relies on early recognition. Despite the importance of early recognition, however, a review of nursing literature during the last 10 years revealed only one article dealing specifically with this condition. The purpose of this article is to revi

Idiopathic necrotizing fasciitis: recognition, incidence, and outcome of therapy.

Early recognition and treatment of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is essential for survival. The diagnosis of primary or idiopathic NF may be particularly challenging because it occurs in the absence of a known causative factor or portal of entry for bacteria. Patients with NF treated between 1989 and 1993 were reviewed to determine the incidence, clinical features, bacteriology, and results of treatment in patients with idiopathic NF. Idiopathic NF occurred in nine (18%) of 51 patients, five men and four women, ranging in age from 21 to 67 years. Associated conditions included diabetes mellitus (

[Synergistic necrotizing fasciitis of genitalia and perineum. Our experience].

Presentation of 9 cases of synergistic genitalia and perineum necrosing fascitis treated in our service over the last 5 years. The contents of the disease and its terminology has been reviewed by the light of the existing literature. In our series, patients mean age was 65 years. Three of our 9 patients had diabetes mellitus, and also 3 had liver disease due to alcohol. The initial septic focus was found in 8 cases, and in 4 it was urological, basically urethra's stricture. The most frequently involved germs were aerobe-anaerobe associations. Mortality was 11%.

Necrotizing fasciitis in two children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe, soft tissue infection, and is an unusual condition in children. The cornerstone of therapy is prompt, aggressive surgical treatment. Despite vigorous treatment, mortality rates are high. We report the occurrence of necrotizing fasciitis in two children during the granulocytopenic phase of induction chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The diagnosis and treatment of necrotizing fasciitis in these two children was made more difficult by their underlying disease and its chemotherapy. The successful treatment of their infections relied on a multimodalit

Necrotizing fasciitis: a potentially fatal complication of diabetes mellitus.

We describe a fatal case of necrotizing fasciitis in a newly diagnosed 73-year-old diabetic patient. This rare condition which has been described previously in diabetic patients, is characterized by widespread necrosis of underlying fascial tissue associated with severe systemic upset, despite few overt cutaneous manifestations. Without prompt recognition and extensive debridement it may be fatal.

Group B streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis arising from an episiotomy.

A case of extensive necrotizing fasciitis arising from an episiotomy is presented. Group B beta-hemolytic streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus were isolated. Prompt recognition and aggressive therapy resulted in a favorable outcome despite significant morbidity. Salient clinical features of this rare postpartum complication are discussed and previous cases are reviewed. In addition to wide surgical resection, therapy included aggressive volume resuscitation with Swan-Ganz catheter monitoring, the use of military antishock trousers (MAST suit) to control diffuse hemorrhage, and temporary app

Declining Diagnostic Accuracy of the Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRINEC) Score in Necrotizing Fasciitis: A Case Report With Contemporary Evidence Review.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly advancing soft-tissue infection with high morbidity and mortality, and markedly worse prognosis when complicated by delayed diagnosis and intervention. Distinguishing necrotizing fasciitis from less severe soft-tissue infections remains a significant clinical challenge, prompting the development of the Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRINEC) score to aid early recognition. Early enthusiasm for the score led to widespread clinical use; however, subsequent experience has raised concerns about its utility as a sensitive rule-out tool. We pre

Case Report on Necrotizing Fasciitis after Liposuction and Abdominoplasty.

Liposuction and abdominoplasty are common cosmetic procedures, but they can lead to severe complications such as necrotizing fasciitis (NF), which is a life-threatening infection with rapid progression and significant mortality rates. NF can develop after surgical procedures due to bacterial colonization or inadequate postoperative care. In the case shown here, a 33-year-old woman presented with skin flap fascial necrosis with abdominal wall infection 20 days after undergoing abdominoplasty with liposuction at another private clinic. Initial management included incision and drainage of an abdo

[Fatal retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis due to Aeromonas caviae septicaemia].

Aeromonas is well-recognized for causing diarrhea and post-traumatic wound infections. The most common Aeromonas species include Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas caviae, and Aeromonas sobria. In cases of immunocompromise and malignancy, Aeromonas infections can prove fatal. Instances of deadly necrotizing fasciitis in the extremities due to Aeromonas infection have been documented. Herein, a case of previously unreported fatal retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis involving Aeromonas caviae in a patient with a history of gastric cancer is presented.
