Co-regulation between young deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their caregivers: study protocol of Calming Together.

BACKGROUND: Children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) often experience more difficulties with self-regulation than their typical hearing peers. Self-regulation develops partly through internalization of regulation strategies provided by their caregivers during co-regulation. Co-regulation is a dynamic process through which caregivers and children influence and regulate each other's emotions and physiological responses. Given the essential role of co-regulation in the development of self-regulation it is important to investigate co-regulation in DHH children and their caregivers, given th

Suspected association of a novel MECOM variant with congenital radioulnar synostosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital radioulnar synostosis (CRUS) is a forearm deformity caused by embryonic development disorder, characterized by limited forearm rotation, which can significantly impair patients' daily lives. The pathogenesis of CRUS has not been fully elucidated; with the advancement of whole-exome sequencing (WES) technology, a growing number of related gene mutations have been identified. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a 5-year-old boy who was diagnosed with CRUS due to bilateral limited forearm rotation. The boy was found to harbor a novel variant in the MECOM gene. His father had unila

Testing a mediational model of sexually aggressive behavior in nonincarcerated perpetrators.

This study examined a psychological model of male sexually aggressive behavior toward women. Forty-seven men who reported completing or attempting acts that legally represent rape in most states and 56 nonviolent men completed measures assessing early home environment, attitudes regarding women and relationships, impulsive behaviors, and peers' characteristics. As predicted, sexually aggressive behavior was associated with exposure to negative childhood experiences with fathers. These experiences included reports of emotionally distant, uncaring fathers and witnessing father-perpetrated domest

How do expectant fathers respond to infant cry? Examining brain and behavioral responses and the moderating role of testosterone.

Expectant parents' responses to infant cry may indicate future risk and resiliency in the parent-child relationship. Most studies of parental reactivity to infant cry have focused on mothers, and few studies have focused on expectant fathers, although fathers make important contributions to parenting. Additionally, although different responses to infant cry (behavioral, psychological and neural) are hypothesized to track together, few studies have analyzed them concurrently. The current investigation aimed to address these gaps by characterizing multimodal responses to infant cry within expect

Patterns of depression among adolescent mothers: Resilience related to father support and home visiting program.

The negative consequences of maternal depression are a major public health concern, both for mothers and for their children. Despite the high prevalence of depression among adolescent mothers, little is known about the patterns of adolescent mothers' depression in the early parenting years. The present study examined mothers' depression during the first 2 years following childbirth in a sample of 428 young mothers (20 or younger at first childbirth) who were participants in a randomized controlled trial of a home visiting parenting support program. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the s

The risk of schizophrenia and child psychiatric disorders in offspring of mothers with lung cancer and other types of cancer: a Danish nationwide register study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal immune responses and brain-reactive antibodies have been proposed as possible causal mechanisms for schizophrenia and some child psychiatric disorders. According to this hypothesis maternal antibodies may cross the placenta and interact with the developing CNS of the fetus causing future neurodevelopmental disorders. Therefore, we investigated if children of mothers with cancer might be at higher risk of developing psychiatric disorders, with particular focus on small-cell lung cancer, which is known to induce production of antibodies binding to CNS elements. METHODS: Nat

Elastosis perforans serpiginosa-like pseudoxanthoma elasticum in a child with severe Moya Moya disease.

A 2-year-old girl with Moya Moya disease who had relapsing cerebrovascular strokes presented with loose skin folds, 'chicken' skin appearance and perforating elastosis serpiginosa-like lesions in the genitocrural region. Histologically, calcified material perforating the epidermis and adjacent short curled and mineralized elastic fibres suggested a variant of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE). As PXE is known to be caused by various mutations in the transmembrane transporter ABCC6 gene, we hypothesized that a novel ABCC6 mutation may underlie this unique combination of PXE and elastopathic vascul

Sensitization to four common inhalant allergens within 302 nuclear families.

The coincidence of allergic sensitization was investigated in 302 school-aged children and their parents. Specific sensitization to four common inhalant allergens (grass and birch pollens, cat dander, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) was ascertained by means of skin-prick tests (SPT) carried out on the complete family unit at the beginning of a 22-month follow-up period. The same test procedure was then repeated on the children twice at 11-month intervals to provide cumulative prevalences of sensitization. A clinical history of atopy in the children (hay fever or asthma; n = 47), which was deri

Sun Protection Behaviours and Photosensitivity in Japanese Children: Toyama Adjunct Study of Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).

Children have up to three3 times the annual sun exposure of adults. This cross-sectional study evaluated sun protection behaviorbehaviour, related factors, and the incidence of photosensitivity in Japanese children. A self-administered questionnaire administered to mothers of second2nd-grade children as part of the Toyama Adjunct Study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study was used and analyzedanalysed (n=1,691). The results showed that 67.5 % of children always or sometimes used sunscreen when going out for a long time, while 73.2 % used at least one method of sun protection when swim

The impact of paternal alcoholism and maternal social position on boys' school adjustment, pubertal maturation and sexual behavior: a test of two competing hypotheses.

Two competing hypotheses concerning the effects of stressful environments on the onset of puberty were tested using longitudinal data for a sample of boys from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Paternal alcoholism and maternal social position were used as indicators of family stress. School placement was monitored from school entry to 14 years of age. Teachers rated the boys' disruptive and anxious behaviors, while the boys reported on parenting behaviors at 10 years of age. Pubertal maturation, age of first sexual intercourse and sexual behavior were assessed between 11 and 14 years of age. The

Novel mutations of the POLR3A gene caused POLR3-related leukodystrophy in a Chinese family: a case report.

BACKGROUND: POLR3-related leukodystrophy is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by onset time ranging from the neonatal period to late childhood, progressive motor decline that manifests as spasticity, ataxia, tremor, and cerebellar symptoms, as well as mild cognitive regression and hypodontia. POLR3-related leukodystrophy belongs to the family of RNA polymerase III-related leukodystrophy, which are caused by biallelic mutations in the POLR3A, POLR3B, POLRC1, or POLR3K genes. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we report a female child with POLR3-related leukodystrop

Smoking behaviour change among fathers of new infants.

Protecting infants from exposure to parental tobacco smoke is key to positive health outcomes in childhood and later life. While mothers' smoking has been well researched, fathers' smoking has received little attention. This paper reports data from a cross-sectional survey of 286 smoking fathers in the English Midlands, interviewed when their infants were 8-14 weeks old. It examines whether fathers attempt and successfully achieve two smoking behaviours positively associated with infant health: quitting and not smoking in the home. The birth of a new baby was not associated with attempting or

[Resilience, coherence and stress in families of children with intellectual disabilities].

This study addresses factors accounting for resilience in the face of adversity and ongoing stress in families of children with intellectual disabilities. 327 families were examined. Measures of family sense of coherence (FSOC), family functioning, stress and coping behaviors were administered. Additionally, measures of the children's level of practical, cognitive and social competencies, as well as problem behaviors were applied. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationship between FSOC, family functioning and children's competencies on the one side and parental stress on

Identification of a novel 5' alternative CFTR mRNA isoform in a patient with nasal polyposis and CFTR mutations.

Cystic fibrosis may be revealed by nasal polyposis (NP) starting early in life. We performed cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) DNA and mRNA analyses in the family of a 12-year-old boy presenting with NP and a normal sweat test. Routine DNA analysis only showed the heterozygous c.2551C>T (p.Arg851*) mutation in the child and the father. mRNA analysis showed partial exon skipping due to c.2551C>T and a significant increase in total CFTR mRNA in the patient and the mother, which was attributable to the heterozygous c. -2954G>A variant in the distant promoter region, as de

Induced delusional disorder. a review of the concept and an unusual case of folie à famille.

Induced delusional disorder (or shared paranoid disorder), also known as folie à deux, is a fairly uncommon disturbance characterized by the presence of similar psychotic symptoms in two or more individuals. Most often the symptoms are delusional. Usually the 'primary' case, i.e. the individual who first develops psychotic symptoms, can be distinguished from one or more 'secondary' cases, in whom the symptoms are induced. We discuss the concept of shared paranoid disorder and consider various aetiological, clinical and diagnostic issues related to the disturbance. We also describe a case of fo

Callous-Unemotional Behaviors and Harsh Parenting: Reciprocal Associations across Early Childhood and Moderation by Inherited Risk.

Callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors increase children's risk for subsequent antisocial behavior. This risk process may begin in early childhood with reciprocal pathways between CU behaviors and harsh parenting. In a sample of 561 linked triads of biological mothers, adoptive parents, and adopted children, the present study examined bidirectional links between CU behaviors and harsh parenting across three time points from 18 to 54 months and investigated moderation by inherited risk for psychopathic traits. Child CU behaviors and harsh parenting were measured using adoptive mother and adoptive f

How do different types of childhood maltreatment relate to adult personality pathology?

There are insufficient data investigating the relative associations between different kinds of childhood maltreatment and the severity of adult personality pathology. Personality pathology and childhood maltreatment (sexual, physical, and emotional abuse and neglect) were assessed in 156 nonpsychotic psychiatric patients. Measures included the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire for DSM-IV (PDQ-4+), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Multidimensional Neglectful Behavior Scale (MNBS), and the Conflict Tactics Scales Parent-Child version (CTSPC-CA). Bivariate logistic regression anal

Factor structure and validity of the parenting scale.

Confirmatory factor analyses based on the scoring derived from 5 prior studies of the Parenting Scale were conducted using a representatively recruited sample of 453 couples parenting 3-to 7-year-old children. Comparative analyses favored the Reitman et al. (2001) 2-factor scoring system as well as a 3-factor solution, including Lax, Overreactive, and Hostile discipline. This 3-factor solution demonstrated good fit across parent gender and child age and gender. Mothers rated themselves as more overreactive than fathers. The factor scores correlated significantly with several validity measures,
