Investigating Father or Partner Involvement in Family Integrated Care in Neonatal Units: Protocol for a Prospective, Multicenter, Multiphase Study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal unit (NU) admissions for premature babies can last for months, which can significantly impact parental mental health (MH) with symptoms of depression, stress, and anxiety. Literature suggests fathers experience comparable MH symptoms to mothers. Family integrated care (FICare) is a culture where parents are collaborators and partners in caring for their hospitalized newborns. FICare improves infant outcomes and maternal MH. Similar reports on fathers are limited. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study is to investigate the impact of supporting father or partner engageme…

Mother- and Father-Child Reminiscing About Past Events Involving Pain, Fear, and Sadness: Observational Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Pain in childhood is prevalent and is associated with fear, particularly in the context of injuries or procedural pain, and negat … and sadness. METHODS: One hundred and three 4-year-old children (55% girls) and their parents (52% fathers) engaged in a narrative elicitation task in which they reminisced about unique past events involving pain, fear, and sadness. Parent-child narratives were coded using established coding schemes based on the developmental psychology literature. RESU …

Adverse Birth and Child Outcomes in Children Fathered by Men Treated with Antidiabetics Prior to Conception: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The safety of fathers' use of antidiabetic drugs in terms of child outcomes is an important clinical question. We aimed to assess the risk of adverse birth and early childhood outcomes after fathers' use of antidiabetics prior to conception. METHODS: A nationwide cohort study based on Danish health registries. The study comprised all live born singleton children in Denmark (1997 through 2018). Children were categorized according to fathers' filled prescriptions for antidiabetic drugs three months prior to conception. Exposed cohorts: children born after paternal use of insulin or …

Efficacy and safety of sirolimus therapy in familial hypoinsulinemic hypoglycemia caused by AKT2 mutation inherited from the mosaic father.

Activating mutation in the insulin signal-transducing kinase AKT2 results in severe hypoinsulinemic hypoketotic hypoglycemia and a characteristic phenotype of possible overgrowth and, sometimes, acanthosis nigricans. Herein, we describe a metabolic and hormonal profile before and during treatment with sirolimus in two brothers with AKT2 mutation inherited from the mosaic father, who showed low-level mosaicism in sperm. The boys, aged 1 and 14, who had severe non-insulin-dependent hypoketotic hypoglycemia and a typical dysmorphism, were admitted to endocrinology department for the analysis of t

Case Report: Haploidentical Bone Marrow Transplantation in Two Brothers With Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Using Their Father as the Donor.

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is an X-linked genetic disorder with a variable phenotypic expression that includes thrombocytopenia, eczema, and immunodeficiency. Some patients may also exhibit autoimmune manifestations. Patients with WAS are at increased risk of developing malignancies such as lymphoma. Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation remains the only curative treatment. Haploidentical bone marrow transplantation (haplo-BMT) with post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PT-CY) has more recently been applied in WAS. Here, we report two brothers who underwent successful T-cell replete ha

Like father, like son. Physical Activity, Dietary Intake, and Media Consumption in Pre-School-Aged Children.

An imbalance between energy input and energy needs contributes to the growing incidence of overweight children. Pre-schoolers normally like to move, but even at this young age, they are already affected by a lack of physical activity and a high amount of screen time. Media consumption contributes to unhealthy diets and extends the length of time spent sitting. Longer periods of sitting are, independent of the level of activity, seen as a risk factor for the development of obesity. In the present study, 160 pre-schoolers and their parents (128 mothers, 121 fathers) were examined. The results sh…

"The Fathers have eaten Sour Grapes, and the Children's Teeth are set on Edge": Differentiating the Emotional Experiences of Grima and Disgust.

The Spanish term grima refers to the aversive emotional experience typically evoked when one hears, for example, a scratch upon a chalkboard. Whereas Spanish speakers can distinguish between the concepts of grima and disgust, English and German speakers lack a specific word for this experience and typically label grima as disgust. In the present research, we tested the degree of differentiation between the two aversive experiences in Spanish speakers. Study 1 addressed whether Spanish speakers apply spontaneously the term grima rather than disgust to grima-eliciting experiences. Study 2 system

Our Father who art in prison: Conviction and rehabilitation for Australian Catholic clergy who are child sexual offenders.

In light of the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, this article analyses the custodial sentences of 143 Australian Catholic clergy. The majority of these sentences were for convictions for indecent assault for which the median sentence was two years' imprisonment. It is doubtful whether the Australian community would consider such sentences as adequate, particularly where offences were against children. Current Australian legislation allows for ongoing long-term sanctions, including judicial orders for chemical castration, to be imposed on convicted sex offenders, especial

A missense mutation in SCN1A in brothers with severe myoclonic epilepsy in infancy (SMEI) inherited from a father with febrile seizures.

Severe myoclonic epilepsy in infancy (SMEI) is an age-dependent epileptic encephalopathy occurring in the first year of life and is one of the intractable epilepsies. Heterozygous mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel alpha subunit type1 gene (SCN1A) are frequently identified in patients with SMEI; two-thirds of these mutations are truncation mutations (non-sense and frameshift), and one-third are missense mutations. Although most reported SMEI cases arise as sporadic mutations, close relatives of SMEI patients have also been shown to manifest other types of epilepsies at a higher rate

Cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome in a father and a female fetus: early prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis and autosomal dominant transmission.

Ultrasonography in a female fetus revealed cystic cervical hygroma, severe micrognathia, and vertebral and upper limb anomalies suggestive of cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome (CCMS) which was diagnosed ultrasonographically at 16 weeks' gestation. The father is affected and presents with a Pierre Robin sequence, short stature and typical costovertebral anomalies. CCMS is a rare and severe disorder. The high frequency of sporadic cases, vertical transmission, and the excess of sibs affected via horizontal transmission suggest dominant autosomal mutation with possible germinal mosaicism. The ver

HPV Vaccine Awareness, Past Behaviors, and Future Intentions Among a Diverse Sample of Fathers Aged 27 to 45 Years: A National Survey.

Men aged 27 to 45 are eligible for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination as of 2019, yet relatively little is known about whether they have received or intend to receive it. We conducted a cross-sectional, online survey among fathers aged 27 to 45 between March and April 2022, to assess associations between HPV vaccination awareness, behaviors, intentions, and psychosocial constructs from the Health Belief Model. We examined the characteristics of those who had (a) heard of the HPV vaccine, (b) already received ≥ 1 dose, and (c) intentions for future vaccination among those who had never been…

Rescripting-A grounded theory study of the contribution that fathers make to Family-Based Treatment when a young person has anorexia nervosa.

AIM: To present a grounded theory of the contribution that fathers make to family-based treatment when a young person has anorexia nervosa. BACKGROUND: Research indicates a potential to improve outcomes by involving both parents in the treatment of anorexia nervosa. However, fathers are underrepresented both within treatment and research. Family-based treatment requiring the involvement of both parents presents an opportunity to better understand the role of the father in treatment. DESIGN: Classic grounded theory. METHODS: Individual interviews conducted with fifteen fathers involved in fa…

Caring Dads intervention for fathers who have perpetrated abuse within their families: Quasi-experimental evaluation of child protection outcomes over two years.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, two of the most common forms of maltreatment substantiated by child protective services are child exposure to domestic violence and child physical abuse. Fathers are identified as the parent responsible for a substantial proportion of this maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether providing a group-based intervention program for fathers was associated with greater engagement of fathers in child protection case management and with lower rates of subsequent father-perpetrated abuse. PARTICIPANTS: A quasi-experimental design compared child protection outcomes i…

Pre-conception and prenatal alcohol exposure from mothers and fathers drinking and head circumference: results from the Norwegian Mother-Child Study (MoBa).

Although microcephaly is a feature of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, it is currently unknown whether low-to-moderate prenatal alcohol exposure affects head circumference. Small magnitude associations reported in observational studies are likely to be misleading due to confounding and misclassification biases. Alternative analytical approaches such as the use of family negative controls (e.g. comparing the effects of maternal and paternal exposure) could help disentangle causal effects. We investigated the association of maternal and paternal alcohol drinking before and early in pregnancy with infant
