The efficacy of fish-oil based fat emulsion administered from the first day of life in very low birth weight newborns.

BACKGROUND: DHA has been shown to be important for foetal brain development, optimal development for motor skills and visual acuity in infants. Newborns born prematurely are at increased risk for DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) insufficiency because they may not have benefited from a full trimester of the mother's lipid stores and have very limited ability to synthesize DHA. Moreover, within the first 2-3 weeks of life, the main sources of lipids for most prematurely delivered infants are soyabean/safflower/olive oil emulsions which are rich in n-6 fatty acids and do not contain DHA. AIM: To perfo

Clustering effects on postprandial insulin secretion and sensitivity in response to meals with different fatty acid compositions.

Dietary fatty acids play a role in glucose homeostasis. The aim of this study was to assess the individual relationship between dietary saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fatty acids with postprandial β-cell function and insulin sensitivity in subjects with normal and high fasting triglycerides. We assessed postprandial β-cell function (by the insulinogenic index and the ratio of the insulin to glucose areas under the time-concentration curve) and insulin sensitivity (by the oral glucose and the minimal model insulin sensitivity indices) over four nonconsecutive

Resolvin D3 improves the impairment of insulin signaling in skeletal muscle and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through AMPK/autophagy-associated attenuation of ER stress.

Resolvin D3 (RD3), an endogenous lipid mediator derived from omega-3 fatty acids, has been documented to attenuate inflammation in various disease models. Although it has been reported that omega-3 fatty acids attenuate metabolic disorders, the roles of RD3 in insulin signaling in skeletal muscle and hepatic lipid metabolism remain unclear. In the current study, we examined the role of RD3 in skeletal muscle insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis using in vitro and in vivo obesity models. In mouse primary hepatocytes, RD3 treatment reduced lipid accumulation and the production of lipogenic p

Evidence of docosahexaenoic acid deficiency in maple syrup urine disease: insights from plasma long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid status.

BACKGROUND: Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an inherited metabolic disorder requiring protein restriction, often limiting intake of animal-derived foods. This raises concerns about long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) status. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate plasma n-3 and n-6 fatty acid levels in MSUD patients. METHODS: This single-center, cross-sectional study included 16 MSUD patients and 22 unaffected siblings sharing a similar household and environmental background. Dietary intake was recorded and plasma fatty acid profiles were analyzed. RESULTS: Dietary asse

Saturated Fats from Butter but Not from Cheese Increase HDL-Mediated Cholesterol Efflux Capacity from J774 Macrophages in Men and Women with Abdominal Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that the association between dietary saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and coronary artery disease risk varies according to food sources. How SFAs from butter and cheese influence HDL-mediated cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC), a key process in reverse cholesterol transport, is currently unknown. OBJECTIVE: In a predefined secondary analysis of a previously published trial, we have examined how diets rich in SFAs from either cheese or butter influence HDL-mediated CEC, compared with diets rich in either monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) or polyunsaturated fat

Dietary n-6:n-3 fatty acid ratio in the perinatal period affects bone parameters in adult female rats.

PUFA and their metabolites are important regulators of bone formation and resorption. The effect of PUFA on bone growth may be especially striking during the perinatal period. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of diets with different n-6:n-3 fatty acid (FA) ratios during the perinatal period on bone parameters in the adult offspring. During late gestation and throughout lactation, rat dams were fed an isoenergetic diet containing 70 g linseed oil (n-3 diet), soyabean oil (n-6+n-3 diet) or sunflower-seed oil (n-6 diet) per kg with n-6:n-3 FA ratios of 0.4, 9 and 216, re

Modulation of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in murine salivary gland by dietary fatty acid ethyl esters.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of n-9, n-6, and n-3 dietary fatty acid ethyl esters on basal (uninduced) and Fe2+/ascorbate (induced) lipid peroxidation (LPO) in salivary gland (SG) of mice. Feeding n-3 ethyl ester polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) increased the uninduced and induced LPO in SG homogenates. In contrast, feeding olive oil ethyl esters (n-9) significantly lowered the induced and uninduced LPO in SG tissue. Salivary gland susceptibility to LPO increased in the order of: olive oil < corn oil < safflower oil < n-3 ethyl esters. Olive oil esters in the di

Effect of intravenous lipid emulsions enriched with gamma-linolenic acid on plasma n-6 fatty acids and prostaglandin biosynthesis after burn and endotoxin injury in rats.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of intravenous lipid emulsions enriched with gamma-linolenic acid on plasma fatty acids and series-2 prostaglandins to determine if the slow conversion of linoleic acid by delta-6-desaturase to gamma-linolenic acid could be bypassed to provide substrate for the formation of dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, the immediate precursor for series-1 prostaglandins, in control and injured rats. Dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid can also compete with arachidonic acid for oxidative metabolism by cyclooxygenase to modulate series-2 prostaglandin biosynthesis. DESIGN: Prospective, ra

The role of vitamin E in the nutrition of premature infants.

Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) has been credited with a variety of beneficial effects in the premature newborn infant. It has been thought that deficiency of vitamin E is at least partly responsible for the anemia which often occurs 4 to 6 wk after premature birth, and routine dietary supplementation with vitamin E is frequently recommended. However, critical analysis reveals that published controlled studies of vitamin E supplementation do not agree on the magnitude or even the existence of this protective effect against anemia. Analysis of commonly used feeding practices suggests that the diet
