Chicks and turkey poults were fed for 3 weeks on low-zinc diets, prepared from purified ingredients, supplemented with zinc oxide at graded levels. Birds of both species given the unsupplemented basal diets grew poorly, with high mortality rates. All had severe hyperkeratosis but bone development was normal. Only when birds received diets with low concentrations of added Zn were leg abnormalities observed. Zn requirements were assessed visually from dose-response graphs. A single nucleotide polymorphism (MC1R: c.376A>G) in the MC1R gene was found to be highly correlated with pigment phenotype in the Gyrfalcon. Homozygous genotypes c.376GG and c.376AA were found to dominate the extreme white and dark plumage types respectively, and heterozygotes occurred mainly in intermediate phenotypes. However, some heterozygotes were associated with extreme phenotypes, indicating that melanism/albinism might also involve other loci.

The chocolate plumage color in chickens is due to a sex-linked recessive mutation, choc, which dilutes eumelanin pigmentation. Because TYRP1 is sex-linked in chickens, and TYRP1 mutations determine brown coat color in mammals, TYRP1 appeared as the obvious candidate gene for the choc mutation. By combining gene mapping with gene capture, a complete association was identified between the chocolate phenotype and a missense mutation leading to a His214Asn change in the ZnA zinc-binding domain of the protein. Frogs have highly conserved hand and foot morphology, possessing four fingers and five toes. As an exception, two Japanese ranid frog species, the Otton frog Babina subaspera and the dagger frog Babina holsti, possess a unique thumb-like structure (the pseudothumb) in the forelimb, giving an appearance of a total of five fingers on the hand.
