Q fever is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. Farm animals and pets are the main reservoirs of infection, and transmission to human beings is mainly accomplished through inhalation of contaminated aerosols. This illness is associated with a wide clinical spectrum, from asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic seroconversion to fatal disease. Q fever in children has been rarely reported. We reviewed published work on this topic. Seroepidemiological studies show that children are frequently exposed to C burnetii. However, children are less frequently symptomatic than adults following infection, a…

Yellow fever, the original viral haemorrhagic fever, was one of the most feared lethal diseases before the development of an effective vaccine. Today the disease still affects as many as 200,000 persons annually in tropical regions of Africa and South America, and poses a significant hazard to unvaccinated travellers to these areas. Yellow fever is transmitted in a cycle involving monkeys and mosquitoes, but human beings can also serve as the viraemic host for mosquito infection. Recent increases in the density and distribution of the urban mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, as well as the rise i…

Honeybees, Apis spp., maintain elevated temperatures inside their nests to accelerate brood development and to facilitate defense against predators. We present an additional defensive function of elevating nest temperature: honeybees generate a brood-comb fever in response to colonial infection by the heat-sensitive pathogen Ascosphaera apis. This response occurs before larvae are killed, suggesting that either honeybee workers detect the infection before symptoms are visible, or that larvae communicate the ingestion of the pathogen. This response is a striking example of convergent evolution …

Fever is a common symptom of childhood illness, and much time and effort is spent in the pursuit of reducing high temperature. Although antipyretic drugs are the main form of treatment, this report considers the part that physical treatments might play in reducing the temperature of febrile children. Such treatments include tepid sponging, removing clothing, and cooling the environment. Of these treatments, tepid sponging has been studied most extensively, as an addition to paracetamol, but seems to offer little advantage over paracetamol alone. It is likely that other methods might be equally…

A diagnosis of Q fever endocarditis was made in 7 patients, 6 with predisposing factors and 3 with occupational risk factors. Prompt recognition of Coxiella burnettii endocarditis is required when clinical signs of endocarditis such as fever, anaemia, elevated liver transaminases, congestive cardiac failure are accompanied by negative blood cultures. Serological evidence of elevated antibody titres to Phase I and Phase II antigens of Coxiella burnettii are diagnostic. Prolonged antimicrobial therapy combined with surgery has resulted in the marked reduction of mortality from 50 per cent of 17 …

We report on a 29-year-old female patient who developed a dolent nodular exanthema on both lower legs after a prolonged respiratory infection of about 14 days. The chest X-ray showed a distinct enlargement of the left hilus and reduced transparency in the left upper pulmonary lobe. These findings were interpreted as pneumonia with para-infectious erythema nodosum. The serology showed IgM antibodies against chlamydia pneumoniae. Therapy with a macrolide antibiotic led to a rapidly improved general condition and also to the disappearance of the exanthema. There are some reports on single cases w
