Duration of untreated psychosis and pathways to care in Suriname: a qualitative study among patients, relatives and general practitioners.

PURPOSE: Psychosis is a severe mental health problem and is responsible for poor health outcomes, premature mortality and morbidity, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The duration of untreated psychosis (DUP), that is the time period between onset of symptoms until initiation of appropriate treatment by a healthcare professional, is one of the main determinants for successful treatment in western settings. This study aims to explore the factors related to the DUP among Surinamese patients using the perspectives from patients, their families and first-line healthcare professionals

Stressors and symptoms associated with a history of adverse childhood experiences among older adolescents and young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Manitoba, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had major economic, social and psychological consequences for adolescents and young adults. It is unclear whether those with a history of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) were particularly vulnerable. We examined whether a history of ACEs was associated with financial difficulties, lack of emotional support, feeling stressed/anxious, feeling down/depressed, increased alcohol and/or cannabis use and increased conflict with parents, siblings and/or intimate partners among 16- to 21-year-olds during the pandemic. METHODS: Data were collected in Novembe

Social Support Networks Among Black Caregivers of Persons With Memory Problems.

Positive social support can predict health outcomes in populations that experience significant burdens, such as minority caregivers. The purpose of the current study was to detail the social network (SN) of 36 Black family caregivers (FCGs) for persons with memory problems (PWMP) and examine differences in SN support depending on FCG gender and relationship to the care recipient. Participants were recruited from the Alzheimer's family program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the local community. FCGs were categorized into adult children (ACH), grandchildren and in-law children, a

[Gambling in elderly patients].

Behavioural addictions concern behaviour which generate pleasure (shopping, gambling, sex, etc.). Pathological gambling is the most common behavioural addiction in elderly people. It can be severely harmful causing psychological, financial and family problems and increasing the risk of suicide. Gambling addiction is underestimated in the elderly. Psychological, social and family support is important whatever the age, with treatment aiming to improve the person's quality of life, help them regain control of their gambling or stop altogether.

Assessing the integration of social protection into infectious disease policies: a multi-country analysis of TB, HIV, and malaria strategies in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and malaria continue to impose major economic hardship on households in Sub-Saharan Africa. While global frameworks such as the WHO End TB Strategy and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) emphasize social protection, evidence remains limited on how national policies translate these commitments into practice. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed how national TB, HIV, and malaria policies and strategic plans in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Zambia define and operationalize social-protection mechanisms to reduce household economic burden. It also examined ali

Novel multi-functional life support system.

UNLABELLED: Concepts of cardiopulmonary support (CPS), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and ventricular support (VS) have been thoroughly studied and refined. These perfusion adjuncts often require multiple devices, skill sets, and significant financial burden to purchase, maintain, deploy, and use. We describe a novel system that is rapidly deployable, user-friendly, portable, safe, and economical. Over a 1-year period we have used a multi-functional life support system (MLS) in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, cardiovascular intensive care unit, and cardiac surgical suites.

Parenting adults who become homeless: variations in stress and social support.

This article focuses on the stressors of parenting an adult child who experiences homelessness. Parents whose adult children become homeless may provide support to this child, but they may also subsequently experience stress and require social support themselves. Findings from this study support the hypothesis that parents who spend more time or money helping their homeless adult offspring experience higher levels of stress. Results also show higher levels of stress among parents who helped with activities of daily living and among parents who worked to prevent harm involving their adult homel

Determinants of out-of-pocket expenditures amongst cancer patients undergoing modern radiotherapy modalities in public healthcare facilities of Tamil Nadu, South India.

BACKGROUND: The advancement of medical technology has improved cancer treatment, yet financial disparities remain, particularly in low-income regions. Modern radiotherapy modalities, including LINAC, Cobalt Therapy, and Brachytherapy, impose significant Out-Of-Pocket Expenditure (OOPE) on patients despite public healthcare provisions. This study aims to assess OOPE and its determinants among patients undergoing advanced radiotherapy in public healthcare facilities in Tamil Nadu. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in secondary and tertiary hospitals across Tamil Nadu, enrolling 500

Economic Burden of Developmental Disorder Treatment in Korea and Various Overseas Policies: A Study on the Reinforcement for National Assistance.

BACKGROUND: Developmental disorders are characterized by delays in motor skills, language, cognition, emotional regulation, and social abilities. The most common conditions within this category include intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder, which not only impact individuals and families but also have broader effects on the socioeconomic system. Despite the necessity of early detection and intensive treatment for developmental disorders, limited coverage by the national health insurance system in South Korea imposes a significant financial burden on families. An Ethical Analysis of a Healthcare Scandal: Lessons from the "Newborn Gang" Case.

The "Newborn Gang" scandal, which emerged in Türkiye in 2024, exposed allegations of organized fraud, manipulation of neonatal intensive care referrals, financial exploitation of the healthcare reimbursement system, and preventable infant deaths. While previous publications have contributed important perspectives on the case, including its political, economic, and ethical dimensions, there remains a need for a more comprehensive ethical analysis integrating clinical, organizational, and health system perspectives. This study reconstructs the chronology of the case using publicly available docu

Incorporating socioeconomic status into studies on delay discounting and health via subjective financial status: An initial validation in tobacco use.

Delayed reward discounting (DRD) refers to the extent to which an individual devalues a reward based on its delay in time and has been linked to a wide variety of health behaviors. Because it is commonly measured using monetary rewards, income is typically used as a covariate to adjust for a person's socioeconomic status. Standard financial income measures have several limitations, such as not incorporating pertinent considerations like cost of living or number of financial dependents. This study examined a novel subjective financial status measure that uses a simple omnibus self-attribution a

Avoided emissions and conservation of scrub mangroves: potential for a Blue Carbon project in the Gulf of California, Mexico.

Mangroves are considered ideal ecosystems for Blue Carbon projects. However, because of their short stature, some mangroves ('scrub' mangroves, less than 2 m) do not fulfil the current definition of 'forests', which makes them ineligible for emission reduction programmes such as REDD+. Short stature mangroves can be the dominant form of mangroves in arid and nutrient-poor landscapes, and emissions from their deforestation and degradation could be substantial. Here, we describe a Blue Carbon project in the Gulf of California, Mexico, to illustrate that projects that avoid emissions from defores

Financial stress response profiles and psychosocial functioning in low-income parents.

Parenting in the context of poverty is accompanied by heightened stress and heightened stakes. How parents respond to poverty-related stress has important implications for family functioning, but research investigating individual differences in low-income mothers' and fathers' responses to financial stress and their associations with parents' concurrent psychosocial adaptation is lacking. A better understanding of differences in stress responses among low-income parents is required to develop and tailor prevention programs that meet these families' needs. This study applies latent profile anal

Numerical cognition across the lifespan: A selective review of key developmental stages and neural, cognitive, and affective underpinnings.

Numerical cognition constitutes a set of hierarchically related skills and abilities that develop-and may subsequently begin to decline-over developmental time. An innate "number sense" has long been argued to provide a foundation for the development of increasingly complex and applied numerical cognition, such as symbolic numerical reference, arithmetic, and financial literacy. However, evidence for a direct link between basic perceptual mechanisms that allow us to determine numerical magnitude (e.g., "how many" objects are in front of us and whether some of these are of a "greater" or "lesse
