Remediating flooding paddy soils with schwertmannite greatly reduced arsenic accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) but did not decrease the utilization efficiency of P fertilizer.

Planting rice (Oryza sativa L.) in As-contaminated paddy soils can lead to accumulation of arsenic (As) in rice grains, while the application of phosphorus (P) fertilizers during rice growth may aggravate the accumulation effect. However, remediating flooding As-contaminated paddy soils with conventional Fe(III) oxides/hydroxides can hardly achieve the goals of effectively reducing grain As and maintaining the utilization efficiency of phosphate (Pi) fertilizers simultaneously. In the present study, schwertmannite was proposed to remediate flooding As-contaminated paddy soil because of its str

Flood Control: How Milk-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Can Help to Improve the Intestinal Barrier Function and Break the Gut-Joint Axis in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

UNLABELLED: Many studies provided compelling evidence that extracellular vesicles (EVs) are involved in the regulation of the immune response, acting as both enhancers and dampeners of the immune system, depending on the source and type of vesicle. Research, including ours, has shown anti-inflammatory effects of milk-derived EVs, using human breast milk as well as bovine colostrum and store-bought pasteurized cow milk, in in vitro systems as well as therapeutically in animal models. Although it is not completely elucidated which proteins and miRNAs within the milk-derived EVs contribute to the

High-resolution adaptive optics-trans-scleral flood illumination (AO-TFI) imaging of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR).

This study aims to correlate adaptive optics-transscleral flood illumination (AO-TFI) images of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) with standard clinical images and compare cell morphological features with those of healthy eyes. After stitching 125 AO-TFI images acquired in CSCR eyes (including 6 active CSCR, 15 resolved CSCR, and 3 from healthy contralateral), 24 montages were correlated with blue-autofluorescence, infrared and optical coherence tomography images. All 68 AO-TFI images acquired in pathological areas exhibited significant RPE contras

Study of the applicability of Sponge City concepts for flood mitigation based on LID (low impact development) measures: A case study in Conakry City, Republic of Guinea.

Urban flooding is becoming a significant urban epidemic in many nations throughout the world as a result of land use and climate change, and regular heavy rains. In this study, we choose to investigate the viability of Sponge City concepts for flood mitigation based on low impact development (LID) strategies in a 26.66 km2 area situated in Guinea's capital city of Conakry. The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM5) was used to simulate the impact of LID measures on the lowering of runoff peaks and node flooding. Simulation results before and after LID facilities are compared in order to understa

A new insight into Cd reduction by flooding in paddy soil: The different dominant roles of Fe and S on Cd immobilization under fluctuant pe + pH conditions.

The unsteady comprehensive system of pe + pH strongly affects the fate of Cd in paddy soils. However, the specific pe + pH threshold determining Cd bioavailability is largely unknown especially considering the roles of Fe and S reduction. The experiment set different water managements to obtain paddy soil samples with unstable pe + pH, and chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization were applied to reveal the dynamic process and mechanism about how Fe and S controlled Cd mobilization. The results showed that low pe + pH was favorable t

Clinical characteristics and exploratory outcome associations among patients hospitalized with acute febrile illness during a post-flood period: a multicenter cohort study from Vietnam.

Flooding can disrupt sanitation, contaminate water sources, and alter patterns of infectious disease; however, causal attribution of an individual febrile illness episode to flood exposure is difficult in retrospective hospital-based data. This study described hospitalized patients with acute febrile illness during a post-flood period in northern Vietnam, exploring associations with adverse short-term outcomes. This multicenter retrospective observational cohort included 237 consecutive patients admitted in Thai Nguyen province from October to November 2025. Demographic, documented environment

Association between social support and recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder after flood: a 13-14 year follow-up study in Hunan, China.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most prevalent long-term psychiatric disorders among survivors of traumatic events. It is well established that social support has been related to the onset of PTSD after natural disasters. However, very little is known whether or not social support has had an influence on the recovery from the PTSD that was diagnosed after floods. This study, therefore, made a follow-up assessment of PTSD in flood victims 13-14 years after they were diagnosed with PTSD in 2000 to measure the prevalence rate of PTSD among them and identify the ass…

Predicting Infectious Disease Incidence After Flooding Using Artificial Intelligence Models: A Retrospective Pre-Post Cohort Study Using Routinely Collected EHR Data.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Natural disasters, particularly floods, significantly increase infectious disease risk through environmental contamination and healthcare system disruption. Despite well-documented flood-disease associations, predictive models for post-disaster epidemiological surveillance remain limited. We aimed to develop and validate machine learning algorithms to predict infectious disease incidence following flood events. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective pre-post cohort study using routinely collected electronic health records from Firuzkuh County health centers, comparing a 30…

Egg yolk lecithin alleviates fatigue in flood-stressed mice by modulating hypothalamic microglial activation and the hepatic AKT/GSK3β pathway to attenuate neuroinflammation and metabolic dysregulation.

Given its known anti-inflammatory and cognitive-enhancing properties, egg yolk lecithin (EYL) shows therapeutic potential for mitigating fatigue in flood-confined mice. EYL supplementation alleviated key pathological manifestations of flood confinement in mice, including body composition loss, metabolic waste accumulation, neuroinflammation, and motor deficits. Mechanistically, EYL supplementation suppressed the excessive activation of microglia, which led to a reduction in the expression of TNF-α and IL-1β in the brain. Additionally, it partially restored the homeostasis of neurotransmitter a

Evaluation of the social and economic impact of extreme weather events in people living with HIV in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (S3E project): Protocol for a mixed-method study.

The impacts of extreme weather events (EWEs), such as droughts and floods, continue to be felt inequitably and disproportionately, with vulnerable communities experiencing diverse effects. While more is known about the direct impacts of EWEs on the general population, there is limited quantified evidence regarding the indirect socioeconomic impacts of climate-driven EWEs on vulnerable sub-populations such as people living with HIV (PLHIV). Globally, South Africa has the largest number of PLHIV, who by the nature of their medical needs and the stigma around their disease burden, have different …

Assessment of exposure, coping and adaptation strategies for elements at risk to climate change-induced flooding in urban areas. The case of Jangwani Ward in Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania.

Urban areas are the engines of socioeconomic growth and the homes of billions of people around the globe. In a changing climate, urban areas are inexorably from vulnerability to climate hazards including flooding which deters their social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The main objective of this paper was to explore exposure to elements at risk due to climate change-induced flooding in urban areas. In addition, the paper analyses the coping and adaptation strategies practiced at the community and national levels and recommends appropriate policy measures for enhanced climate resi

A participatory geographic information system-based route optimisation for decentralised municipal solid waste management system: A case study from a flood-prone town in Kerala, India.

Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) remains a critical challenge in India due to rapid urbanisation, increasing waste volumes, and limited institutional capacity. Although urban local bodies (ULBs) allocate up to 80% of their MSWM budgets to collection and transport, inefficiencies persist due to unoptimised routes and poor alignment with local conditions. Most geographic information system (GIS)-based optimisation models remain top-down, failing to reflect on-the-ground realities and are rarely implementable. This study presents a participatory GIS-based routing methodology for decentrali
