Are dental infections a cause of brain abscess? Case report and review of the literature.

Dental pathology and/or treatment have been linked to a small number of brain abscesses as possible sources of infection. A further case is presented, in which a dental site is implicated. A review of the evidence was undertaken. A wide range of dental procedures had been implicated. In some cases the brain isolate was not of dental origin. In many, the diagnosis was one of exclusion. In order to confirm the role of odontogenic infection in the pathogenesis of brain abscess, modern sampling techniques should be used to precisely identify the isolates. The causal organism should be identified i

[The microbial flora and humoral protective factors in odontogenic inflammations in the maxillofacial area].

Some features in the pathogenesis of various forms of an inflammatory process were demonstrated by immunologic and microbiologic methods in patients with odontogenic infections. A close relationship has been revealed between microflora of an inflammatory focus, immune response type, and inflammation course in the maxillofacial area.

Alveolar cavitational osteopathosis. Manifestations of an infectious process and its implication in the causation of chronic pain.

A recently discovered oral disease process of infectious origin, characterized by nonradiographically detectable, hollow, pathologic, alveolar cavitational lesions of significant size, is described. This oral infectious disease process, termed alveolar cavitational osteopathosis, is causally implicated not only in the genesis of certain craniofacial pain syndromes, among them idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia and atypical facial pain, but also in chronic pain syndromes remote from the craniofacial region including the back, chest, arms, legs and cervical areas. A diagnostic process is presented

Experimental pulpal immunization. I. Route of application and demonstration of immune response.

The experimental exposure of the pulpal room of rabbit teeth made it possible to apply an ovalbumin agar gel deposit into the pulpal room and subsequently investigate the immune response. Diffusion of antigen from the agar into environment was proven. After 3 weekly applications 5 rabbits showed hemagglutinating anti-ovalbumin titers between 1:128 and 1:512, while 7 rabbits receiving 10 weekly applications had titers between 1:8000 and 1:128,000. Control rabbits which received the agar deposit alone showed no antibody response. Control rabbits which obtained 3 identical weekly doses of ovalbum

Epidemiology of bloodstream infections and predictive factors of mortality among HIV-infected adult patients in Thailand in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy.

Few studies have described the pattern of bloodstream infections (BSI) among HIV-infected patients in the highly active antiretroviral thera … cterial or fungal BSI. The crude mortality was 21%. HAART (OR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.01-0.77; P = 0.017), focal infection (OR, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.10-0.97; P = 0.044), and complication (e.g., shock) (OR, 9.26; 95% CI, 3.25-26.42; P < 0.001) were the predictive factors of mortality. In conclusion, opportunistic infections are still the leading causes of BSI among HIV-infect …

[Clinical evaluation of right gastroepiploic artery (RGEA) graft--comparison of RGEA with right internal thoracic artery (RITA) graft in the coronary bypass grafting (CABG) operation using only arterial grafts].

From January, 1990 through May, 1997, 100 CABG operations were conducted using only double arterial grafts. RITA/left internal thoracic artery (LITA) (n = 38) and RGEA/LITA (n = 62) groups were compared. The incidence of left main trunk lesion was higher in the RITA/LITA group (29%: 13%), and old myocardial infarction was greater in RGEA/LITA group (77%: 55%). Mean age in the RGEA/LITA group showed high tendency (66.8 +/- 8.5: 63.9 +/- 9.2). Both groups were essentially the same with respect to sex, poor left ventricular function, pre-operative aortic baloon pumping (IABP), diabetes mellitus,

Neurological manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus: a prospective study.

A prospective study of the neurological manifestations in all patients with systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) was conducted between February 1985 to January 1989. Excluding herpes zoster infection of peripheral or cranial nerves, post-herpetic neuralgia and migraine, 36 neurological episodes occurred in 33 patients. The presenting symptoms were mental confusion (10), psychosis (five), seizures (six), focal neurological deficit (three), coma (two), headache (five), blurring of vision (three), neuropathy (one) and myelopathy (one). Of these manifestations, only eight episodes were due to primary

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection: study of an epizootic in squirrel monkeys.

An epizootic of an acutely fatal enteric disease in a colony of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) was attributed to infection by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serotype III. Of a total adult population of 96 animals at risk, there were six fatal cases of yersiniosis. Serological evaluation of the colony just after the outbreak ended revealed that 22 of 60 monkeys tested (37%) had significant antibody to Y. pseudotuberculosis (microagglutination titer of greater than or equal to 1:80) but did not have clinical disease. The outstanding pathological lesions noted in dying monkeys were acute, purul

Emerging Natural Focal Infectious Diseases in Russia: A Medical-Geographical Study.

In Russia, as in other countries, the problem of emerging natural focal infectious diseases (EIDs) became more acute toward the end of the 20th century. However, the situation in Russia is unknown to foreign readers, while the prevention and control of these diseases require international collaboration. The aim of the study is to provide a medical-geographical assessment of the distribution of the main natural focal EIDs in Russia, as well as to present the approaches used in the country to create aggregate maps of risk assessment. To consider its current status, we determined the most importa

[Erysipelas in the roe deer--a case report].

An infection of a young male roe deer caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae with a pronounced thrombotic endocarditis in the left valves and focal necrosis in the septum of the heart leading to bacterial sepsis is described. Findings of this kind are extremely rare in roe deer. However, they document the wide host range, which is also illustrated by the numerous publications on such infections in other species.

Dystrophin disruption in enterovirus-induced myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy: from bench to bedside.

Genetic defects of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC) cause hereditary dilated cardiomyopathy. Enteroviruses can also cause cardiomyopathy and we have previously described a mechanism involved in enterovirus-induced dilated cardiomyopathy: The enteroviral protease 2A directly cleaves dystrophin in the hinge 3 region, leading to functional dystrophin impairment. During infection of mice with coxsackievirus B3, the DGC in the heart is disrupted and the sarcolemmal integrity is lost in virus-infected cardiomyocytes. Additionally, dystrophin deficiency markedly increases enterovirus-induced

[Infected aneurysm of abdominal aorta: early CT finding].

Infected abdominal aortic aneurysm is an uncommon but life-threatening disease, especially in case of salmonella infection. Early CT findings should be well known in order to allow immediate diagnosis and accurate management. The authors present an early CT finding of a salmonella infected aneurysm of abdominal aorta in an HIV-infected patient. This pattern consists in a slight-enhancing focal densification of periaortic soft-tissue, while aorta remains of normal size. Within two weeks, infection progressed to the constitution of an infected aneurysm. This CT finding seems to be initial to pre

Beyond granulomatous amoebic encephalitis: changing epidemiology and an expanding spectrum of non-flagellated amoebic CNS infection in India.

PURPOSE: Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) is the conventional label for central nervous system (CNS) infection caused principally by Acanthamoeba spp. and Balamuthia mandrillaris, but contemporary disease encompasses meningitic, focal, vascular, brainstem, and spinal phenotypes that extend beyond the classical description. This narrative review examines the changing epidemiology, clinical spectrum, diagnosis, and management of non-flagellated amoebic CNS infection in India. METHODS: We narratively synthesised published Indian case reports, case series, molecular studies, surveillance

Long-term impact of systemic bacterial infection on the cerebral vasculature and microglia.

BACKGROUND: Systemic infection leads to generation of inflammatory mediators that result in metabolic and behavioural changes. Repeated or chronic systemic inflammation leads to a state of innate immune tolerance: a protective mechanism against overactivity of the immune system. In this study, we investigated the immune adaptation of microglia and brain vascular endothelial cells in response to systemic inflammation or bacterial infection. METHODS: Mice were given repeated doses of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or a single injection of live Salmonella typhimurium. Inflammatory cytokines were measu

Development and validation of a risk score for predicting hospitalization in children with influenza virus infection.

OBJECTIVE: Influenza virus infections cause significant morbidity and often result in hospitalization in children. Many children with influenza seek care in emergency settings during seasonal influenza epidemics. We hypothesized that certain features could predict the need for hospitalization in children with influenza. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of all children 18 years or younger seen at a children's hospital with laboratory-confirmed influenza infection between July 2001 and June 2004. Medical records of children with confirmed influenza virus infection were reviewed. Predictors o
