An investigation into the hammer toe effects on the lower extremity mechanics and plantar fascia tension: A case for a vicious cycle and progressive damage.

Hammer toes are one of the common deformities of the forefoot that can lead to compensatory changes during walking in individuals with this … ormal. These in turn lead to increased internal stress concentration, which in turn lead to further foot deformities. This vicious cycle cause progressive damage and can lead to an increase in the risk of ulceration in the diabetic foot.

Recognizing, treating, and preventing common foot problems.

The incidence, prevalence, and severity of foot conditions increase with age. Teaching patients simple preventive techniques is crucial. Recognition, treatment, and prevention of common foot complaints--i.e., toenail problems, infections, corns and calluses, injuries, flat feet, bunions, arthritis of the toes, and toe and joint deformities--are reviewed.

Serial casting for neuromuscular flatfoot and vertical talus in an adolescent with hereditary spastic paraplegia.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this report is to explore assessment and serial casting intervention for painful rigid flatfoot deformities with vertical talus in an adolescent girl with hereditary spastic paraplegia who was nonambulatory. SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS: The participant's right foot underwent 2 phases of casting with correction first toward hindfoot inversion and then dorsiflexion. Because of a vertical talus, her left foot required an intermediate casting toward plantar flexion, inversion, and forefoot adduction prior to casting toward dorsiflexion. STATEMENT OF CONCLUSIONS: The patient imp…

[Reconstructive measures for the foot after compartment syndrome].

Following severe indirect and/or direct trauma to the foot, compartment syndrome can easily develop in this foot. Untreated, the compartment syndrome results in a complex post-traumatic deformity--the "short foot syndrome." This may manifest itself as a contracted pes equinovarus foot with clawing of the toes. Isolated compartment syndrome of the foot due to local injury may result in the formation of hammer toes. During childhood and adolescence, severe soft tissue injuries to the lower leg or foot, with subsequent compartment syndrome of the foot or a neurovascular injury to the lower limb,

Differences and Similarities in the Feet of Metatarsalgia Patients with and without Rheumatoid Arthritis in Remission.

Objectives: Metatarsalgia continues to be a problem in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in remission (remRA), as well as in the non-rheumatic population, with a mechanical origin. Identify and compare clinical, morphological, disability, synovitis (ultrasound), and radiological osteoarticular damage characteristics in two groups of patients with lesser-ray metar-tarsalgia, with remRA, and without RA. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 84 patients with remRA (mRA) and 60 patients without RA (nmRA). The study evaluated five clinical variables (pain, Foot Function Index (FFI), joint mobil

Operative correction of arch collapse with forefoot deformity: a retrospective analysis of outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There are many forefoot deformities, including hallux valgus, forefoot overload, and hammertoe that are treated as unrelated problems with multiple different techniques. Currently, there has been renewed interest in the role of a gastrocnemius contracture on foot deformities. Our objective was to review a specific surgical treatment plan for forefoot deformities classified by us as Type 2 arch collapse and evaluate the outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 374 patients who underwent foot procedures to treat deformity classified as a Type 2 arch…

Bilateral cleft foot: Radiographic and prenatal ultrasound features of two siblings with a review of literature.

Cleft foot deformity, also known as ectrodactyly, is a rare congenital developmental defect of extremities caused by malformation in continuity of apical ectoderm. The syndrome typically involves malformation or absence of the central rays of the feet and is characterized by deformities like median deep clefts of distal extremities. Routine examination of feet during second-trimester ultrasound (US) may increase the detection rates of foot malformations. Many malformations can be diagnosed with 2-dimensional (2D) US, but 3-dimensional (3D) US also helps better understanding of the foot malform

Muscular Systems and Their Influence on Foot Arches and Toes Alignment-Towards the Proper Diagnosis and Treatment of Hallux Valgus.

(1) Background: Static foot deformities, including hallux valgus, are common deformities. The subject under consideration is the role of extrinsic and intrinsic muscles working within muscular systems that shape the arches of the foot and the alignment of the toes. (2) Methods: Based on a literature review, the muscle systems were analyzed. The systems under consideration were as follows: "tendon stirrup" (system I); muscles complementary to the tendon stirrup (system II); "foot lever" (system III); muscles complementary to system III (system IV); "reins of hallux" (system V), a muscular syste…

Surgical treatment of neglected clubfoot using external fixator.

The definition of neglected clubfoot (NC) includes a variable range of complex deformities of the foot that are refractory to conventional treatments or are treated inappropriately. Several etiologies may be related to this. The Ilizarov method has become established as a tool for treating these deformities. It minimizes soft-tissue damage through gradual correction of the deformity, with a high success rate in relation to achieving a plantigrade foot, with low incidence of recurrence. The indications for treatment include severe rigid deformities (Dimeglio III and IV), or adverse skin conditi

Surgical management of Charcot neuroarthropathy of the ankle and hindfoot in patients with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) of the ankle and hindfoot (Sanders/Frykberg Type IV) is challenging to treat surgically or nonsurgically. The deformities associated with ankle/hindfoot CN are often multiplanar, resulting in sagittal, frontal and rotational malalignment. In addition, shortening of the limb often occurs from collapse of the distal tibia, talus and calcaneus. These deformities also result in significant alterations in the biomechanics of the foot. For example, a varus ankle/hindfoot results in increased lateral column plantar pressure of the foot, predisposing the patie

Fibular hemimelia.

Fibular hemimelia is defined as a partial or complete absence of the fibula. Alongside fibular deformities, there is a wide spectrum of anomalies, foot deformities, and absent rays. A literature review showed only a handful of cases of prenatal diagnosis of fibular hemimelia. It is a rare disorder that might be isolated or associated with visceral anomalies.

Recurrent clubfoot--approach and treatment with external fixation.

A simplified standard setting of the circular external fixator allows correction of all the complex deformities of recurrent clubfoot with minimal surgical intervention and no major complications. In those cases where additional corrective arthrodesis is necessary, it is performed with minimal bone resection because the severe deformities of the foot and ankle have already been corrected.
