Training alters joint power distributions during running in National Football League Draft Preparation Players.

The aim of this study was to compare joint-specific contributions to total lower limb joint power during a speed run in American style football players before and after a 6-week National Football League (NFL) draft preparation camp. Fifty-two players performed one 5-second treadmill run at 5.5-6.5 m/s before and after camp. Speed was consistent between tests. Bilateral hip, knee, and ankle power generation (positive) and absorption (negative) were calculated from kinematics and kinetics using inverse dynamics. Negative total limb power decreased for both limbs, significantly for the left (Z = …

Hamstring injury risk in male professional football: do external training loads play a role?

OBJECTIVES: Hamstring strain injury (HSI) is the most common time-loss injury in football and is prone to recurrence. This exploratory study aimed to describe the relationship between short-term external training load (TL) and HSI occurrence in male senior football players at the professional level. METHODS: TL data in terms of global positioning system (GPS) variables and HSI incidence were collected over four seasons from 25 senior professional football players. GPS variables included total distance (TD), very intense accelerations (>3.00 m/s²), very intense decelerations (<-3.00 m/s²), hig…

Catecholamine Dysregulation in Former American Football Players: Findings From the DIAGNOSE CTE Research Project.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Disturbances in brain catecholamine activity may be associated with symptoms after exposure to repetitive head impacts (RHIs) or related chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). In this article, we studied CSF catecholamines in former professional and college American football players and examined the relationship with football proxies of RHI exposure, CTE probability, cognitive performance, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and parkinsonism. METHODS: In this observational cross-sectional study, we examined male former American football players, professional ("PRO") or coll…

Reliability of Concussion Signs and Symptoms Reporting Among Former Professional American-Style Football Players.

Retrospective evaluations of repeated head injury are needed to better understand associations between head injury exposure and later-life deleterious outcomes. However, there is limited assessment of whether head injury recall assessments produce consistent measures over time, and no assessment of whether the reporting is related to current health status. The concussion signs and symptoms scale (CSS; developed for the Football Players Health Study at Harvard University) was designed to measure cumulative head injury exposure history by asking about the frequency of 10 CSS during active footba…

Diagnostic Pitfalls: Anterior Tibial Stress Fracture in a Professional Football Player - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Periprosthetic fractures (PPF) of the proximal femur are a leading cause of revision after total hip arthroplasty. Internal fixation may be chosen if the hip implant is stable or if a stable fixation may be obtained. Preservation of bone perfusion and adequate stability are essential for successful fracture healing. As presented, plate design and application may induce both osteonecrosis and atrophy of the bone. CASE REPORT: An 82-year-old female sustained a PPF of the proximal femur after cemented hemiarthroplasty. The fracture was treated by plate fixation with cerclages appli

Brain morphometry in former American football players: findings from the DIAGNOSE CTE research project.

Exposure to repetitive head impacts in contact sports is associated with neurodegenerative disorders including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which currently can be diagnosed only at post-mortem. American football players are at higher risk of developing CTE given their exposure to repetitive head impacts. One promising approach for diagnosing CTE in vivo is to explore known neuropathological abnormalities at post-mortem in living individuals using structural MRI. MRI brain morphometry was evaluated in 170 male former American football players ages 45-74 years (n = 114 professional; n…

Differences in head impact biomechanics between playing positions in Canadian high school football players.

The objective of this study was to compare head impact magnitudes and time between impacts among positions in Canadian high-school football. Thirty nine players from two high-school football teams were recruited and assigned a position profile: Profile 1 (quarterback, receiver, defensive back, kicker), Profile 2 (linebacker, running back), and Profile 3 (linemen). Players wore instrumented mouthguards to measure peak magnitudes of linear and angular acceleration and velocity for each head impact throughout the season. A principal component analysis reduced the dimensionality of biomechanical v…

Decrease in Plasma miR-27a and miR-221 After Concussion in Australian Football Players.

INTRODUCTION: Sports-related concussion (SRC) is a common form of brain injury that lacks reliable methods to guide clinical decisions. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can influence biological processes involved in SRC, and measurement of miRNAs in biological fluids may provide objective diagnostic and return to play/recovery biomarkers. Therefore, this prospective study investigated the temporal profile of circulating miRNA levels in concussed male and female athletes. METHODS: Pre-season baseline blood samples were collected from amateur Australian rules football players (82 males, 45 females). Of these…
