Hypoxanthine and Mcardle disease: a clue to metabolic stress in the working forearm.

Forearm exercise in a patient with myophosphorylase deficiency resulted in abnormally high levels of hypoxanthine in the venous blood. The post-exercise hypoxanthine response may reflect ATP depletion in the muscle and provides a useful screening test in muscle diseases with abnormal energy metabolism.

Results of AO plate fixation of forearm shaft fractures in adults.

A series of 111 forearm fractures in 108 individuals involving 177 individual bones, and treated by AO plating is reported. There were 18 different surgeons. Open fractures occurred in 24 per cent of limbs. Reviews at a mean of 3 years after the accident showed 97 per cent of bones to be solidly united, and satisfactory function to be achieved in 80 per cent of limbs. Deep infection occurred 6 times, and non-union in 7 bones. Cross-union developed in 6 patients, all of whom had sustained head injuries. Seven patients sustained operative nerve injuries. It is felt that the implant of choice at …

Mirror hand anomaly: reconstruction of the thumb, wrist, forearm, and elbow.

Surgical procedures and the results of reconstruction of the mirror hand anomaly are presented. The thumb was reconstructed by pollicization of the radial third finger and multiple muscle transfer. The function of wrist, forearm, and elbow improved with arthroplasty of the affected joints. The results of the follow-up are satisfactory. We believe that surgical treatment of the mirror hand should be started in early life.

Bone mineral content in the forearm after fracture of the upper limb.

The bone mineral content was measured by gamma absorptiometry in patients who had sustained fractures of the upper limb. Measurements were taken on the shafts of the forearm and in the trabecular bone immediately proximal to the wrist. Fractures of the surgical neck of the humerus and fractures of the shaft of the humerus did not significantly influence the bone mineral content of the ipsilateral forearm. Fracture of the radius and the ulna, however, caused a 15% loss of the bone mineral content in the trabecular bone proximal to the wrist, whereas the mineral content on the shafts of the frac…

Unilateral Forearm Ulceration in a Newborn: Thinking Outside the Box (Compartment).

This case details a neonate with unilateral forearm ulceration and motor weakness diagnosed with neonatal limb compartment syndrome (NLCS) following interdisciplinary collaboration. NLCS is a rare cause of congenital extremity ulceration. Due to low clinical suspicion, it is easily misdiagnosed, leading to delayed treatment and preventable complications including motor deficits, or in severe cases, amputation. NLCS is sparsely recognized in dermatologic literature, although dermatologists may be the first point of contact as consultants.

Plastic Deformation of the Pediatric Forearm: Recognition, Radiographic Measurement, and Management.

UNLABELLED: Pediatric forearm bowing fractures, also known as plastic deformation fractures, are a clinically important but often underdiagnosed injury pattern. These fractures usually occur from longitudinal compressive forces such as falls on an outstretched hand, causing plastic deformation that exceeds the elastic limit of pediatric bone. Patients often present with nonspecific symptoms like pain, swelling, and limited pronation-supination, and these injuries can be subtle on radiographs. Using standardized measurement methods, such as the percentage of radial bowing relative to total bone…

A Case of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a Patient with Idiopathic Forearm Arteriovenous Fistula.

INTRODUCTION: We report an exceedingly rare case of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) associated with an idiopathic congenital forearm arteriovenous fistula (AVF). Given the absence of previous reports addressing the treatment of HCC in patients with AVF, we evaluate HCC treatment strategies, including the appropriateness of using angiogenesis inhibitors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old man was admitted for the evaluation of liver tumors. His medical history included a chronic, intractable idiopathic right forearm AVF, for which he had undergone multiple surgical interventions. Abdominal EOB-MR…

[Patient-specific 3D-printed implants and templates for elbow and forearm].

The process of 3D printing has found its way into orthopedics and trauma surgery, particularly for complex interventions on the elbow and forearm. By producing patient-specific implants and surgical templates misalignments, fractures and deformities can be precisely corrected. It could be shown that this technology increases the surgical accuracy, shortens recovery times and reduces postoperative complications. Compared to conventional implants 3D-printed implants provide the advantage of individual adaptation to the anatomical situation of the patient. This is particularly relevant in complex…
