Nanometer sized SnS2 particles were synthesised by solid state reaction between tin chloride and thiourea in air at 150-350°C. New Hofmann type clathrates in the form of M(pp)(2)Ni(CN)(4)·2G (where pp = 1-phenylpiperazine, G = 1,4-dioxane and M = Ni, Co or Cd) have been prepared in powder form and their FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra are reported. The results suggest that the present compounds are similar in structure to the Hofmann type clathrates and their structures consist of conjugated polymeric layers of |M-Ni(CN)(4)|(∞) with the pp bound to the metal (M) atom.

BACKGROUND: Cellular metabolism can be evaluated using time-resolved autofluorescence. Because the fluorescence of ocular tissue is an accumulation of the fluorescence of several endogenous fluorophores, it is hard to determine the influence of a single fluorophore. In branch retinal artery occlusion, metabolic changes can be compared with normal tissue.
METHOD: Time-resolved autofluorescence was measured in two patients in two spectral channels, K1 (490-560 nm) and K2 (560-700 nm), and was 3-exponentially approximated and compared with representative results of a healthy eye.

A theory of interaction between the source of sound in phonation and the vocal tract filter is developed. The degree of interaction is controlled by the cross-sectional area of the laryngeal vestibule (epilarynx tube), which raises the inertive reactance of the supraglottal vocal tract. Green colored samples on wall paintings and green powder from a pigment pot found in Pompeii area are investigated by micro-Raman, FT-IR and, for one sample, SEM-EDX. To obtain the green color, green earths and malachite were used, together with mixture of Egyptian blue and yellow ochre. The mineralogical identification of the green earths has been attempted through the comparison of the vibrational features, discriminating between celadonite and glauconite spectra. Traces of a modern synthetic pigment containing copper phthalocyanine were found in a fresco fragment.

UNLABELLED: A new method for the analysis of 24-hour heart rate variability (HRV) using complex demodulation (CDM) implemented with the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and its inverse is described. 21 patients accusing previous syncopal attacks, without myocardial infarction, preexcitation syndrome or severe cardiac failure were submitted to a 24 hrs Holter monitoring with 10 min. of esophageal electrocardiogram. The oxysterol content in normal and sickle red blood cell (RBC) membranes was assessed using thin-layer chromatography and capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Several more oxysterols were present in sickle RBCs compared to normal RBCs. Sickle RBC membranes had a higher concentration of 5 alpha,6 alpha-epoxycholesterol, 5 alpha-cholestane-3 beta,5,6 beta-triol, 7-ketocholesterol and 19-hydroxycholesterol than normal RBC membranes.
