Tendon injury is a known complication of distal radius fracture plate and screw fixation. Targeted musculoskeletal sonography is uniquely capable of assessing both tendon integrity and hardware abnormalities not recognized on radiographs. Each of the 3 patients described presented with pain after an open reduction-internal fixation following a distal forearm fracture. In each patient, radiographic findings, specifically the hardware position, were interpreted as normal. Important radiographically occult observations were subsequently made with sonography, including 3 proud screws and tendon in

BACKGROUND: Isolated fractures of the greater tuberosity (GT) comprise nearly 20% of the fractures of the proximal humerus. The Mutch classification categorizes these injuries by morphology into avulsion (Type I), split (Type 2), and depression (Type 3) patterns. While the efficacy of arthroscopic repair vs. open reduction and internal fixation is well-studied, there is less-convincing data on the comparative effectiveness of different open reduction and internal fixation constructs in GT fracture care.
METHODS: A retrospective review analyzed patients with isolated GT fractures of the humeru

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of distal radius fractures (DRFs) has evolved throughout time. The current management practices typically entail the use of locking compression plates. The inclusion of locking plates with variable angle options made it easier for surgeons to handle comminuted fracture fragments. This study examines the functional and radiological results of DRFs treated using a variable angle locking compression plate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between July 2022 and May 2024, a cohort of 25 patients with DRFs presented to the Department of Orthopaedics and was preoperatively examined bef

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) are quickly growing in popularity as effective tools in the management of diabetes and weight loss. Despite this increased usage, there is a paucity of literature investigating the use of GLP-1RA in patients with ankle fractures. This study aims to compare the outcomes of patients undergoing ankle fracture open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) receiving therapy with GLP-1RA to those not receiving treatment. A retrospective analysis was performed utilizing the TriNetX research network to query patients who underwent ankle fracture ORIF b

PURPOSE: The use of a person's hands is crucial to their ability to succeed at work. Hand pathologies can impact work success by increasing absenteeism (ie, not being able to go to work) and presenteeism (ie, being able to work but in a reduced capacity). In this study, we quantified employed patients' presenteeism and absenteeism following carpal tunnel release or surgical fixation of a distal radius fracture (DRF).
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 91 patients (carpal tunnel syndrome [CTS]: n = 62; DRF: n = 29) from June 2022 to December 2023 were included. Baseline patient charact

INTRODUCTION: The debate continues regarding the best treatment for elderly patients with non-displaced femoral neck fractures (FNFs): internal fixation (IF) vs hemiarthroplasty (HA). The Aim of the present study is to compare surgical insult, mortality, complications, and walking recovery after one year in patients older than 65 treated with cannulated screws or HA for FNFs.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Match-paired comparison of retrospective cohorts: 220 non-displaced FNFs treated with cannulated screws vs 220 displaced FNFs treated with bipolar HA from 2013 to 2021. No differences were observed

Surgical ankle fractures pose a unique situation because both podiatrists and orthopaedic surgeons manage these injuries. Intraoperative fluoroscopy is routinely used; however, excessive radiation can be harmful to both the patient and the surgical team. The primary goal of this study was to determine whether there is a difference in the amount of intraoperative radiation exposure during ankle fracture open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) when performed by orthopaedic surgeons versus podiatrists. This is a retrospective review of patients who underwent ankle fracture ORIF at an urban le

Endoscopic techniques have been widely used in orthopedic surgery, such as arthroscopy and transforaminal endoscopy, but the application in fracture is rarely reported. We reported a case of a 69-year-old male with pelvic fracture (AO/OTA type B2.1) who underwent successful laparoscopy-assisted pubic ramus plate fixation without auxiliary incision. We designed and applied a separate custom-made lengthening surgical instrument for internal fixation installation suitable for laparoscopic surgery, and the entire reduction and internal fixation installation were performed under laparoscopy. The pa

Patients with osteogenesis imperfecta often present with and are managed for various fractures given the brittle bones associated with this disease. Acetabular fractures are one of the most complicated presentations and management is often strenuous on both the patient and the treating surgeon. There is a lack of evidence on how to approach these patients and not many cases reported in the literature. Open reduction and internal fixation can be successful for these patients given extra care is undergone to protect the patient's increased risk of intra-operative and post-operative complications

BACKGROUND: Transcondylar fractures have been reported to rarely occur in the distal humerus, and stable fixation is difficult because of the unique fracture pattern. However, few studies have reported the risk factors for nonunion after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). This study aimed to evaluate the demographic and surgical risk factors for nonunion in patients who had undergone ORIF for transcondylar fractures.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 68 patients who underwent ORIF for transcondylar fractures. Preoperative demographic factors, including diabetes mellitus (DM) and
