Fronto-orbital mucoceles: our experience.

Frontal sinus mucoceles are rare benign neoplasms that can result in bony erosion extending from the borders of the sinus into the orbital cavity. The authors report the fronto-orbital mucoceles they have observed in the last 8 years. The authors used an "open surgery" approach in 12 fronto-orbital mucoceles, characterized by an osteoplastic frontal flap, through a coronal incision or Lynch incision. In this way, they were able to expose the frontal sinus and to remove completely the mucocele from the periorbita. Only one recurrence is reported 2 years after surgery. Excellent aesthetic result

Sinonasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Mimicking a Brain Abscess: Report of a Unique Case.

Sinonasal cancers are rare tumors with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) being one of the more common histological subtypes. These carcinomas typically invade the sinus cavity from which they originate, progressively eroding surrounding bony structures and extending to adjacent anatomical regions. In rare instances, they may breach the posterior or superior walls to invade the anterior cranial fossa (ACF) and frontal lobes. The normal flora of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses includes Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, α- and γ-streptococci, Propionibacterium acnes, and aerob

Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome: Imaging diagnosis in an asymptomatic adult.

Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome (DDMS) was first described in 1933 as a cerebral condition of hemispheric atrophy characterized clinically by contralateral hemiparesis, facial-asymmetry, seizures, and mental retardation. Neuroimaging findings include asymmetric thickening of the calvarium and enlargement of frontal and ethmoid sinuses. There have been 21 reported cases described in the literature with the syndrome undiagnosed until adult age, likely due to less severe or absent clinical findings or symptoms as described in the case presented in this report. This article describes a case where th

Chronic fungal sinusitis leading to disastrous cerebral aspergillosis: a case report.

Cerebral angioinvasion is a fatal complication of disseminated aspergillosis and has been rarely described in diabetic population in the absence of ketoacidosis. We present a case of invasive fungal sinusitis in a 79 year old diabetic man who presented with chronic frontal headaches. Despite appropriate medical and surgical treatment, the disease progressed and the patient eventually succumbed to a fatal ruptured mycotic aneurysm. We emphasize that clinicians should consider this in the differential diagnoses of all diabetics who present with chronic sinusitis, as early diagnosis could be the

[Clinical and experimental rationale of policatan administration in upper respiratory tract inflammation].

Experimental and clinical trials of policatan in ENT inflammation have established that maximal antiinflammatory effect of the drug manifests in experimental serotonin, histamine and corragenin edema, less pronounced--in formaline-induced edema. The drug accelerated healing of infected burn ulcer in rabbit nose by 37%. This may be explained not only antiinflammatory effect of policatan, but also by stimulation of macrophage phagocytosis and bacteriostatic potential. Policatan proved effective in acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis, chronic frontal sinusitis and rhinitis, chronic hyperplastic…

The dimensional and morphological assessment of frontal air sinus in different ages, genders and ethnicities (Arabian-Caucasian and Han-Chinese sub-populations).

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the dimensional and morphological measurements of the frontal air sinuses in different ages and genders in the two ethnicities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 360 subjects (160 males and 200 females) of both ethnicities. Subjects were divided based on age and gender into four groups, including an equal number of both males and females, for each age and ethnic group. The frontal air sinus dimensions were measured utilizing lateral cephalometric radiographs and computed using Winceph version 9.0 software. The frontal air sinus dime

Nasal and sinus endoscopy for medical management of resistant rhinosinusitis, including postsurgical patients.

Nasal endoscopy has been practiced by allergists since the early 1980s; however, allergists in general have not embraced endoscopic evaluation of patients with sinus disease, either before or after surgery. Allergists are in a unique position to render medical (as opposed to surgical) care of patients with sinusitis. There has been a growing realization that endoscopy is a valuable procedure for the evaluation and medical treatment of patients with difficult sinusitis. This has resulted in the need for a resource to allow allergists to understand the nature of endoscopic findings in patients w

[Aggressive fibromatosis of the frontal sinus].

Aggressive fibromatosis (AF) is a benign tumour with expansive and locally invasive growth. It is very rarely seen in the head and neck area. We present a 52-year-old female patient with AF localized to the left frontal sinus. The condition was initially mistaken for chronic sinusitis however computed tomography indicated tumour. A biopsy showed AF and the patient received surgical treatment. Symptoms, signs and treatment are discussed. It is concluded that AF in the sino-nasal tract is a rare, but potentially life threatening condition which might be mistaken for a simple sinusitis.

The "crossbow" incision and nasal flap--its blood supply and clinical application.

An anatomical study of the blood supply of the nose and upper lip was done on 10 specimens. This demonstrated the blood supply of an inferiorly based nasal flap, which was successfully used to gain access for an en bloc resection of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the ethmoid sinuses, frontal sinuses, and nose. The "crossbow" incision and inferiorly based nasal flap facilitate the tridimensional excision of lesions in the anterior base of the skull, the midline portion of middle base of the skull, and the paranasal sinuses.

Reconstructive cranial surgery for invasive and non-responsive mucormycosis.

The incidence of mucormycosis showed a sharp rise during the COVID-19 pandemic in vulnerable populations like people with diabetes. Here, we report a case of mucormycosis of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses in a man in his mid-50s with a background of diabetes mellitus and COVID-19 infection requiring steroids and oxygen support. The infection had remained persistent despite initial debridement by functional endoscopic sinus surgery of the anterior frontal sinus wall and re-exploration, followed by debridement using the brow incision. The patient had received an entire course of systemic antifu

The endonasal endoscopic surgical approach to challenging pediatric frontal sinus inflammatory lesions.

A variety of pathologies and anatomical variations contribute to the underreporting of pediatric paranasal sinus disorders. The frontal sinus presents significant risk for complications due to its proximity to the orbit and brain. Three cases encountered in a tertiary hospital are discussed in this study to illustrate the usefulness of endonasal endoscopic methods in addressing pediatric frontal sinus lesions. These included bilateral frontal sinus mucopyoceles, bilateral frontal allergic fungal sinusitis, and a unilateral frontal mucocele, all of which were completely resolved with no recurre

Orbital invasion of frontal sinus lymphoma.

Paranasal sinus lymphoma is an uncommon malignancy and is often difficult to diagnose. Early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. The tumour generally has poor prognosis. Ophthalmological symptoms and signs occur early in the disease process due to the close proximity of the orbit to the paranasal sinuses. Common presenting features include eye pain, proptosis, visual loss and diplopia. We report a case of frontal sinus lymphoma that presented as a superior-nasal orbital mass in an 84 year old man. CT scan demonstrated a mass occupying the frontal sinuses, with destruction of the an

Frontal sinus trephination: a new technique for office procedure.

A new office technique for frontal sinus trephination is described. The procedure is simple, expedient, and inexpensive. Our experience with 16 patients suggests that this procedure is reasonably safe and, in addition, avoids the often-seen complications of supratrochlear nerve injury and persistent noticeable scar.
