Vibratory Onset of Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia and Muscle Tension Dysphonia: A High-Speed Video Study✰.

OBJECTIVE: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD) is a challenging voice disorder to diagnose, often erroneously diagnosed as muscle tension dy … gnificantly different between AdSD and MTD. However, there were distinct differences in voice onset gestures. Both AdSD and MTD patients presented with vocal hyperfunction during the onset of phonation. In a subset of AdSD patients, a rapid sustained adduction occurred following the initial vibratory motion. Vocal fold vibration then continued until steady …

The relationship between self-injurious behavior and suicide in a young adult population.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that self-injurious behavior (SIB) signals an attempt to cope with psychological distress that may co-occur or lead to suicidal behaviors in individuals experiencing more duress than they can effectively mitigate. DESIGN: Analysis of a cross-sectional data set of college-age students. SETTING: Two universities in the northeastern United States in the spring of 2005. PARTICIPANTS: A random sample of 8300 students was invited to participate in a Web-based survey; 3069 (37.0%) responded. Cases in which a majority of the responses were missing or in which SIB o

Turner syndrome: language profile of young girls at 12 and 24 months of age.

BACKGROUND: Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic disorder associated with complete or partial absence of an X chromosome affecting approximatel … normative expectations. Caregivers reported greater use of speech sounds, and also, greater use of gestures. Although some changes occurred over a 1-year time span (12 to 24 months), all mean test scores remained within the average range and the changes in the percentage of girls manifesting "at risk" status on either the PLS-4 or CSBS-DP were non-signifi …

Correlation of Neonatal Imitation and General Movements Assessment in Late Preterm Infants.

Neonatal imitation (NI) is a foundational marker of early social-cognitive development, yet its universality remains debated, particularly i … sing Prechtl's GMA at corrected ages of 5 and 11 weeks. Both groups exhibited significantly more TP gestures in response to the matching TP model (late-preterm: p = 0.002; term: p < 0.001), whereas MO responses did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). Imitative behavior was present from Day 1 (p = 0.005) and strengthened on Days 2-3 (p < 0.001). No signifi …

Surface electromyographic control of speech synthesis.

Individuals with very high spinal cord injuries (e.g. C1-C3) may be ventilator-dependent and therefore unable to support speech breathing. However, their facial musculature is intact, given that these muscles are innervated by cranial nerves. We developed a system using surface electromyography (sEMG) recorded from facial muscles to control a phonemic interface and voice synthesizer and tested the system in healthy individuals. Users were able to use five facial gestures to control an onscreen cursor and the phonemic interface. Users had mean information transfer rates (ITRs) of 59.5 bits/min …

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Inter-Session Re-Calibration of Ultrasound-Based HMIs.

Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) have gained popularity as they allow for an effortless and natural interaction between the user and the machine by processing information gathered from a single or multiple sensing modalities and transcribing user intentions to the desired actions. Their operability depends on frequent periodic re-calibration using newly acquired data due to their adaptation needs in dynamic environments, where test-time data continuously change in unforeseen ways, a cause that significantly contributes to their abandonment and remains unexplored by the Ultrasound-based (US-base

A model of face selection in viewing video stories.

When typical adults watch TV programs, they show surprisingly stereo-typed gaze behaviours, as indicated by the almost simultaneous shifts of their gazes from one face to another. However, a standard saliency model based on low-level physical features alone failed to explain such typical gaze behaviours. To find rules that explain the typical gaze behaviours, we examined temporo-spatial gaze patterns in adults while they viewed video clips with human characters that were played with or without sound, and in the forward or reverse direction. We here show the following: 1) the "peak" face scanpa

Articulatory consequences of Parkinson's disease: perspectives from two modalities.

Language production involves complex yet productively varying motor behavior. Rule-governed combinations yield a finite set of formational units combined in an infinite number of ways. The creativity of language ensures that no particular articulation will be highly automatized. Linguistic articulation is highly complex and varied. As such, it differs from the other more automatized motor behaviors typically studied such as learned movements in apraxia studies or repetitive behavior as occurs in walking or other everyday activities. Language also strives to maintain a balance between ease of a

From period poverty to policy change: advancing menstrual health as a public health priority in Nigeria.

Period poverty, the lack of access to menstrual products, adequate sanitation, and reliable health information, continues to undermine the health, dignity, and opportunities of millions of girls and women in Nigeria. Closely linked to gender inequality, the problem is compounded by stigma, inadequate infrastructure, and economic barriers, especially for low-income and marginalized groups. While civil society initiatives and isolated government gestures exist, Nigeria still lacks a comprehensive national menstrual health policy. In contrast, countries such as Scotland, Kenya, and Colombia have …

Synchronicity: A Measure of Multi-Joint Movement Coordination in Device Assessment.

This work explores the concept of movement coordination over time; smooth multi-joint gestures are a hallmark of healthy and normative body function. Deviations from normative movement coordination are linked to various health conditions, such as stroke or injury, and can lead to further complications if not addressed. Identifying abnormal movement and quantifying its degree is therefore crucial. Although some quantitative assessments exist, final evaluations often require expert input from occupational or physical therapists. We investigate the characterization of joint movements using motion…

Inducement of fluent speech in persons who stutter via visual choral speech.

A novel phenomenon of fluency enhancement via visual gestures of speech in the absence of traditional auditory feedback is reported herein. The effect on visual choral speech on stuttering frequency was investigated. Ten participants who stuttered recited memorized text aloud under two conditions. In a visual choral speech (VCS) condition participants were instructed to focus their gaze on the face, lips and jaw of a research assistant who 'silently mouthed' the text in unison. In a control condition, participants recited memorized text to the research assistant who sat motionless. A statistic…

Mental health profiles, suicidal behavior, and community sexual assault in 2112 Canadian adolescents.

1025 females and 1087 males in grades 7-12 in Alberta high schools completed measures of emotional and behavioral problems and suicidal behaviors, and of frequency of sexual assaults outside of school. Both males and females experiencing a high number of sexual assaults in the previous 6 months were significantly more likely to have clinical profiles on measures of conduct disorder, somatic disorder, and emotional disorder. 13.2% of 53 girls with frequent, unwanted sexual contact had made more than two suicidal gestures or suicide attempts in the previous 6 months, compared with 1.3% of 783 gi…

Behavioral and bodily self concept changes after assertive training. A pilot study.

The study aims at finding correlations between the development of assertiveness through assertive training and the modification of the bodily self concept (or body image). Eleven social phobic patients (6 women, 5 men, mean age 31.5) are treated in two groups and measured by Rathus's assertiveness schedule, and Osgood's semantic differential (key concepts: my self, my body, my voice, my gestures, my look; control concept: a table). At post test and follow-up (between 6 and 9 months), an ANOVA shows a significant positive change in assertiveness (p 0.001), correlated with modifications in bodil…

Tic modulation using sensory tricks.

BACKGROUND: A sensory trick, or geste antagoniste, is defined as a physical gesture (such as a touch on a particular body part) that mitigates the production of an involuntary movement. This phenomenon is most commonly described as a feature of dystonia. Here we present a case of successful modulation of tics using sensory tricks. CASE REPORT: A case report and video are presented. The case and video demonstrate a 19-year-old male who successfully controlled his tics with various sensory tricks. DISCUSSION: It is underappreciated by movement disorder physicians that sensory tricks can play a

["Astasia-abasia," unilateral left-sided apraxia, and touch disorders in an astrocytoma of the corpus callosum. A clinico-pathological report].

The authors report the case of a 55 year old woman suffering from an astrocytoma of the corpus callosum, probably originating in the middle part of the commissure and subsequently involving the whole structure, beyond which it extended very little. They describe the symptoms and signs, consisting initially of a progressive isolated astasia-abasia, in the absence of any psychological disturbance, and subsequently consisting of an apraxic disorganisation involving particularly gestural activity of the left upper limb. They discuss the significance of the psychological disturbances and problems o
