Many benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors can contain giant cells in variable amounts. In some tumors, such as tenosynovial giant cell tumor and giant cell tumor of bone, these osteoclast-like giant cells are so prominent and characteristic that their presence has defined the entity. Other examples of bone tumors in which the presence of osteoclast-like giant cells is characteristic include chondroblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, nonossifying fibroma, and central giant cell granuloma. These tumors have a distinct pathogenesis, although some parallels can be identified. The osteoclas…

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common vasculitis of large and medium vessels affecting adults over the age of 50. Due to its acute ischemic damage through a systemic inflammatory process, GCA is a medical emergency with the risk of permanent vision loss. Therefore, early intervention is critical. Patients often present with well-documented systemic manifestations such as jaw claudication, headache, scalp tenderness, and fatigue. These patients are usually subject to blood tests for inflammatory markers and temporal artery biopsy. However, clinical manifestations vary considerably and m

Aortitis is a rare inflammatory condition with diverse etiologies. Tuberculosis, though infrequently involved, may coexist with giant cell arteritis (GCA), sharing similar clinical features that complicate diagnosis. Their association is exceptionally rare, presenting a significant diagnostic challenge for clinicians. A 61-year-old man with no prior medical history presented with systemic and inflammatory symptoms, revealing diffuse aortitis associated with both tuberculosis and GCA, the latter confirmed by temporal artery biopsy. The rare coexistence of tuberculous aortitis and GCA poses a di

This article presents a clinical case of a central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) resembling a periapical lesion of endodontic origin. A 39-year-old, otherwise healthy male patient was referred to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery for its diagnosis and subsequent management. The patient presented with an asymptomatic, progressively increasing intraoral swelling associated with the mandibular left para-symphysis region. On radiographic evaluation, a unilocular radiolucent lesion involving 33-34 teeth was noted. An incisional biopsy presented a giant cell lesion, following which surg

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical findings, response to therapy and course of patients with transmural eosinophilic infiltration at temporal artery biopsy (TAB).
METHODS: The study consisted of a retrospective cohort of 254 consecutive GCA patients with evidence of transmural inflammation at TAB seen at the Santa Maria Nuova Hospital over a 28-year period. The findings of the 22 patients with eosinophilic infiltration (≥ 20 eosinophils/hpf) at TAB were compared with those of 232 patients without. Among these 232 patients, we sampled 42 GCA patients matched for age, sex and follow-up durati

OBJECTIVES: To identify factors associated with the progression of giant cell arteritis (GCA)-related or associated aortic dilations.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 47 GCA patients with aortic dilation were longitudinally analyzed. Each patient underwent ≥2 imaging scans of the aorta during the follow-up. Three progression statuses of aortic dilations were distinguished: fast-progressive (FP) defined by a progression of the aortic diameter ≥5 mm/year or ≥1 cm/2 years, slow progressive (SP) by a progression of the aortic diameter >1 mm during the follow-up, and not progressive (NP) when

INTRODUCTION: Calciphylaxis is a condition that causes vascular calcification and intimal proliferation with thrombotic occlusion of small-to-medium-sized vessels.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of a 64-year-old woman who presented with a clinical picture that was suggestive of anterior arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy due to giant cell arteritis (GCA), but was found to have calciphylaxis confirmed by histologic examination. When calciphylaxis affects the blood supply to the eye, commonly it causes sudden vision loss, pallid optic disk edema, and a relative afferent pupillary defect

Extra-anogenital giant cSCCs are rare but have worse outcomes compared to smaller tumors. Prompted by limited data, the authors conducted a retrospective study to gather more information about giant cSCCs to optimize clinical care. We identified seven cases of giant cSCCs from a review of cSCC cases treated in the Unit of Dermatosurgery between 2016 and 2022. Most patients were male (85.71%) with a mean age of 80.29 ± 12.22 years. UV radiation was the most common risk factor (five cases) followed by smoking (three cases) and hidradenitis suppurativa (one case). Most giant cases were located in

To report on the occurrence and characteristics of eye manifestations and determine the predictors of permanent vision loss (PVL) in patients with giant cell arteritis. Case-control study. Retrospective cohort study of 258 patients diagnosed with giant cell arteritis (GCA) over a 20- year period at a single institution. Eighty nine of 258 patients (34.5%) with GCA had vision symptoms and 56 (21.7%) developed PVL. Acute loss of vision with no preceding ocular symptoms occurred in 28.5%; for those with symptoms, median time to vision loss was 4.5 days. Bilateral clinical eye involvement was pres

INTRODUCTION: A Giant Cell Tumor (GCT) of the bone is a locally osteolytic tumor made up of mononuclear ovoid stromal cells and multinucleated giant cells. It commonly affects long bones like the distal femur and proximal tibia, but can also develop in the cervical spine during the third and fourth decades of life.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 20-year-old female presented to the clinic with a complaint of neck pain persisting for one month. Clinical examination revealed bilateral radiculopathy in the upper limb, which was also associated with pain in the left shoulder and elbow. Imaging revealed a…

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is considered a benign intraosseous lesion with a varied range of clinical features in two subtypes, including aggressive and non-aggressive lesions. This study presents a 9-year-old boy with multiple bilateral CGCG in the mandible without any systemic disease or specific syndrome. Clinical, radiographic, and histopathological findings demonstrated the aggressive lesions. It is discussed how the differential diagnosis and treatment can be determined based on the patient's age as well as the size and manner of the lesion.

Postinfantile giant cell hepatitis (PIGCH), also known as syncytial giant cell hepatitis, continues to be a poorly defined and rare disease presentation in the adult population. Although a common finding in neonates, there is limited literature on the disease process, causes, and treatment success of PIGCH in adults. A strong association between autoimmune disorders and PIGCH, considerably so in the case of autoimmune hepatitis, has been established. However, there have been limited to no reports of PIGCH secondary to rheumatoid arthritis. Our clinical case aims to bring forth a vignette of PI

An 83-year-old male patient presented due to a 3-week history of swelling of the tongue with tongue pain on eating, yellowish plaques, and a gray-brown lesion in the anterior portion of the tongue. Sudden loss of vision in the left eye and temporal headache occurred 3 days before presentation. Due to elevated C‑reactive protein, sonography of the supraaortic arteries as well as positron emission tomography/computed tomography was performed. Imaging revealed inflammation of the great arteries as well as a halo sign on ultrasound of the temporal artery. Thus, a diagnosis of giant cell arteritis
