A Multi-Point Surveillance for Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles among Clinical Isolates of Gram-Negative Bacteria Recovered from Major Ha'il Hospitals, Saudi Arabia.

The devastating nosocomial resistance is an on-going global concern. Surveillance of resistance is crucial for efficient patient care. This … mannii (35%) and K. pneumoniae (23%) dominated among coinfections in SARS-CoV2 patients. The "other Gram-negative bacteria" (n = 77, 12.5%) from diverse sources showed unique species-specific resistance patterns, while sharing a common Gram-negative resistance profile. Among these, Providencia stuartii was reported for the first time in Ha'il. In addition, specimen sour …

A Teleost Bactericidal Permeability-Increasing Protein Kills Gram-Negative Bacteria, Modulates Innate Immune Response, and Enhances Resistance against Bacterial and Viral Infection.

Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) is an important factor of innate immunity that in mammals is known to take part in the clearance of invading Gram-negative bacteria. In teleost, the function of BPI is unknown. In the present work, we studied the function of tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) BPI, CsBPI. We found that CsBPI was produced extracellularly by peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL). Recombinant CsBPI (rCsBPI) was able to bind to a number of Gram-negative bacteria but not Gram-positive bacteria. Binding to bacteria led to bacterial death through membrane permeabilizati…

Rapid detection of ESBL-producing gram-negative bacteria isolated from blood: a reasonable and reliable tool for middle and low resource countries.

INTRODUCTION: Delay in appropriate treatment in patients with bacteraemia can increase morbidity, mortality, and health expenditures. We compared the Rapid Direct Test (RDT) designed to detect ESBL-producing gram-negative bacteria (GNB) directly from positive blood cultures bottles, with two conventional ESBL detection tests: Screening and Confirmatory Disk Diffusion Assay (SC-DDA) and an MIC Screening and ESBL E-test (MIC/ET). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We screened all blood cultures in a tertiary care facility from August to December 2005. We only included one positive bottle per patient in whic…

Non-susceptibility trends among Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other non-fermentative Gram-negative bacteria from bacteraemias in the UK and Ireland, 2001-06.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter spp. are important opportunists, notorious for resistance. Pseudomonas spp. are collected in the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) bacteraemia surveillance, with Acinetobacter spp. and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia well represented in the 'other Gram-negatives' group. METHODS: Data for collected isolates were reviewed together with LabBase bacteraemia reports to the Health Protection Agency (HPA). Isolates with unusual resistances were subjected to molecular investigation. RESULTS: From 2001 to 2006, the BSAC surveillance collected

Epidemiology and attack index of gram-negative bacteria causing invasive infection in three special-care neonatal units and risk factors for infection.

Of 13 consecutive episodes of gram-negative septicemia (Escherichia coli eight, Klebsiella oxytoca four, Klebsiella pneumoniae one) among 113 infants in three special-care neonatal units studied, five episodes were epidemiologically related according to a novel fingerprinting method for enterobacteria. In ten episodes the invasive phenotype was found in the fecal flora of up to 54% of the fellow infants in the same ward and for periods of up to 70 days. Two units exchanged patients, which further promoted the transmission of invasive strains. The attack index was highest for certain E. coli st

The anti-lipid A antibody HA-1A binds to rough gram-negative bacteria, fixes complement and facilitates binding to erythrocyte CR1 (CD35).

MoAbs to bacterial cell wall lipopolysaccharide are currently under evaluation for the treatment of Gram-negative sepsis. The mode of action of these reagents remains poorly understood. In this study we examined the ability of radiolabelled HA-1A (an IgM anti-lipid A MoAb) to bind in vitro to Salmonella minnesota (Re 595), Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus pyogenes. HA-1A was able to bind specifically to the 'rough' mutant Salm. minnesota, but not to a 'smooth' E. coli, or Strep. pyogenes. Binding to Salm. minnesota led to complement fixation which resulted in bacterial adherence to erythroc

Rectal screening displays high negative predictive value for bloodstream infection with (ESBL-producing) Gram-negative bacteria in neonates with suspected sepsis in a low-resource setting neonatal care unit.

OBJECTIVES: We analysed the concordance of rectal swab isolates and blood culture for Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) isolates in neonates with a suspicion of neonatal sepsis admitted to a neonatal care unit in Haiti. METHODS: We matched pairs of blood and rectal samples taken on the date of suspected sepsis onset in the same neonate. We calculated the proportion of rectal isolates in concordance with the blood isolates by species and genus. We calculated the negative predictive value (NPV) for GNB and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing GNB for all rectal and blood isolate pairs in n…
