Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a small Gram-positive rod causing erysipelas in many animal species and humans. In poultry, disease which takes an acute form with high mortality is noted mostly in turkey, hen, and goo se flocks. Especially in geese, erysipelas cause high economic losses. In this study, we determined the phenotypic and genotypic features of Erysipelothrix strains isolated from diseased geese, using the API Coryne tests for biochemical characteristics and PCR, random amplified polymorphic DNA-PCR (RAPD) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) for genetic characteristics. Two novel aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming and short rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated as sgz500922T and sgz5001074T, were isolated from paddy soils in Fujian, PR China. The taxonomic position of two strains was determined using polyphasic taxonomy and phylogenomic analysis. Phylogenetic analysis and 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strains sgz500922T and sgz5001074T formed a distinct clade with Gorillibacterium massiliense G5T and shared sequence similarities of 96.3 and 93.5%, respectively. The average nucleotide identity value between the two strains an

Ulcerative granulomatous disease in farmed snubnose pompano Trachinotus blochii (Lacepede, 1801) in the Philippines was documented in 2019 by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and has since become an annual problem for fish farmers, with outbreaks occurring between September and October. Three apparently healthy adults and 5 diseased adults displaying ulcerated skin were subjected to diagnosis. During postmortem examination, multiple nodules were present in all kidneys and the spleen in the 5 diseased fish. Histopathology revealed severe granulomatous formations at different stages

The capsule has been implicated in the virulence of the swine pathogen Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, a rod-shaped, intracellular Gram-positive bacterium that has a unique phylogenetic position in the phylum Firmicutes and is a close relative of Mollicutes (mycoplasma species). In this study, we analyzed the genetic locus and composition of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of the Fujisawa strain of E. rhusiopathiae. Genome analysis of the Fujisawa strain revealed that the genetic locus for capsular polysaccharide synthesis (cps) is located next to an lic operon, which is involved in the incorp

Coccidioidomycosis caused by Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii is a rare infectious disease except in endemic regions. In this report the third documented imported case of coccidioidomycosis in Turkey was presented. A thirty-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with fever and purulent drainage from his chest tube. He had worked in Arizona, USA, until 4 months before this presentation. While in Arizona, he experienced cough and hemoptysis and was diagnosed as pulmonary coccidioidomycosis. He was treated with itraconazole for two months and he had no symptoms for 3 yea

Whipple disease is a rare systemic disease caused by Tropheryma whipplei. It can present with a wide range of nonspecific symptoms that might overlap with underlying medical conditions, posing a diagnostic challenge. We present a 61-year-old man with a past medical history of rheumatoid arthritis and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, who presented with persistent leukocytosis and supraclavicular lymphadenopathy. A positron emission tomography scan revealed hypermetabolic activity in the supraclavicular, abdominal, and pelvic lymph nodes along with a myocardial hypermetabolic l

In this retrospective study we describe unusual cases of clostridial hepatitis associated with high mortality in young broiler chicks. Eleven cases of necrotizing hepatitis in broiler chicks from four companies were submitted to the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center or the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network between 2017 and 2020. In most flocks, increased 3-day mortality was followed by an elevated 7-day mortality. Gross lesions included green to dark brown discoloration of the liver, congested lungs, serosanguineous fluid in the caudoventral aspect of the abdomen, and emphysema in the yo

BACKGROUND: Amnionitis rarely occurs with intact membranes. Haemophilus influenzae is a rare pathogen in intra-amniotic infection, but its importance and prevalence could be increasing, as reflected by the growing number of reported cases in the last 20 years.
METHODS: Using the key words "amnionitis," "intra-amniotic infection," "chorioamnionitis," and "Haemophilus influenzae," we searched MEDLINE files from 1980 to the present. Articles dating before 1980 were accessed from cross-reference of the more recent studies.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: H. influenzae, a nonmotile, aerobic, gram-negati

BACKGROUND: Nocardia farcinica is an uncommon cause of brain abscess, most often in immunocompromised hosts. Increasingly, cases in immunocompetent individuals are reported, but diagnosis remains challenging and mortality is high.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 63-year-old diabetic male with sudden altered mental state and right temporal hemianopsia. Initial CT and FDG-PET/CT suggested a tumour, delaying suspicion of infection. MRI later revealed a cerebral abscess, and stereotactic aspiration yielded purulent material. Direct microscopy showed branching Gram-positive rods; culture identified…

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Aeromonas are Gram-negative rods known to cause a spectrum of diseases. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an idiopathic complex condition resulting from interaction of multiple factors. Aeromonas infection in association with IBD is still largely unknown. We aim to look for the significance of Aeromonas infection and for significant differences between IBD and non-IBD patients.
METHODS: A retrospective observational analysis was performed of all patients positive for Aeromonas in stool cultures, during a 10-year period, from a tertiary and university hospital.
RESULTS:

Anaerobic species constitute a significant part of the bacterial community of the mouth. Although the time and species involved in the primary colonization of infants are of great importance by forming the basis for further colonization, the development of the oral anaerobic microflora with age is still inadequately understood. In the present study, time and succession of colonization of oral anaerobes were longitudinally examined in 44 healthy Caucasian infants at 2, 6, and 12 months of age. Unstimulated saliva samples were quantitatively cultured on non-selective Brucella blood agar and seve

Acinetobacter spp. are non-fermented gram-negative rods that are widespread in the environment and colonize in the human skin. They are known to be a nosocomial pathogen causing, pneumonia, meningitis and bacteremia. Recently, they have been found increasingly in catheter-related infections (CRI). Thirty-seven cases of bacteremia were developed in our hospital during the past five years. Of these 27 cases were chosen out of the medical records for discussion in this paper. Twenty-three cases are blood positive for Acinetobacter anitratus and 4 cases for A. lwoffii. Most cases have an underlyin

In order to study the effect of modulation of the intestinal flora on granulopoiesis, conventional mice were given drinking water with or without a combination of antimicrobial drugs, i.e. neomycin, polymyxin B, amphotericin B and nalidixic acid. These antimicrobial drugs, which selectively eliminate the aerobic gram-negative rods and suppress yeasts, are currently administered to our patients to prevent infection during granulocytopenia (nalidixic acid has been replaced by pipemidinic acid). After sublethal irradiation, mice on antimicrobial drugs were granulocytopenic longer than the control

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, probiotics have been increasingly used in companion animals. However, there are few studies on their effect on canine vaginal flora. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of orally administrated multi-strain lactic-acid probiotic bacteria on the vaginal flora of healthy bitches.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 38 Labrador retriever bitches were given one sachet of multi-strain probiotic with food once a day for nine weeks. Samples for microbiological examination were taken twice (on day 0 and day 63) from the cranial vagina and cultured for aer

BACKGROUND: Canine aortic valve endocarditis carries a poor prognosis. In the current literature there are only two reports of infectious endocarditis associated with Actinomyces; Actinomyces turicensis and an Actinomyces-like organism. Endocarditis due to Actinomyces neuii subsp. anitratus (now known as Winkia neuii subsp. anitrata) has rarely been reported in humans, and to the best of our knowledge, has never been reported in dogs.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 4 year-3 months old female neutered Great Dane presented with lethargy, hyporexia, 'praying position' stance, acute onset of cherry eye and

Bacterial pericarditis is a critical diagnosis caused by a wide range of organisms including Streptococcus pneumoniae and other anaerobic organisms like Cutibacterium acnes which has been gaining more importance as a causative organism. Cutibacterium species are Gram-positive microaerophilic rods that constitute part of the normal flora of skin and mucosal membranes. The incidence of pericarditis caused by this organism is underreported as it is often dismissed as a skin flora contaminant. However, if left untreated, Cutibacterium acnes can cause pericarditis with serious complications. In thi
