Anthropometry in skeletal dysplasia.

Skeletal dysplasia or osteochondrodysplasia is the designation of more than 200 different disorders, that are characterized by abnormalities of the skeleton, disproportional short stature, and a variety of other problems. The underlying biochemical defect is unknown in the vast majority of skeletal dysplasias, and the diagnosis is based on radiological findings and anthropometric measurements. Despite this fact, the information on body proportions in even the more common forms of skeletal dysplasia is scarce. Patients with achondroplasia are often diagnosed shortly after birth. Linear growth i

Growth abnormalities in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Growth abnormalities in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis can be divided into two groups: local and systemic. Local disorders of growth often result in increased bone length and bone age or in marked decreases in longitudinal growth due to immobilization, premature epiphyseal closure, or fusion. Common growth defects seen in the knee, hand, wrist, hip, spine, and jaw are discussed. Systemic growth delay is most commonly secondary to active disease or treatment with corticosteroids. Nutritional aspects such as decreased appetite, reduced caloric intake, metabolic caloric requirements greater than a

Introduction and overview of interferon alfa in myeloproliferative and hemangiomatous diseases.

Both myeloproliferative and hemangiomatous diseases are characterized by abnormal cell proliferation. In myeloproliferative disorders, the abnormal growth involves hematopoietic progenitor cells of the marrow, whereas in hemangiomatous diseases, the abnormal growth involves endothelial cells of capillary blood vessels. Recombinant interferon alfa has shown promise in inducing remission in a number of myeloproliferative diseases, and, more recently, it has also been shown to be effective in treating several hemangiomatous disorders. In neither case is the mechanism of action of interferon alfa

Growth impairment and limited range of joint motion in children should raise suspicion of an attenuated form of mucopolysaccharidosis: expert opinion.

Growth impairment together with bone and joint involvement is common to most patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) disorders. The genetic basis for these metabolic disorders involves various enzyme deficiencies responsible for the catabolism of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The incomplete degradation and subsequent accumulation of GAGs result in progressive tissue damage throughout the body. Bone ossification is particularly affected, with the consequent onset of dysostosis multiplex which is the underlying cause of short stature. Joint manifestations, whether joint contractures (MPS I, II, V

Delay of growth and development in children with bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis.

The elevated incidence of short stature (body height < (-)x - 2s), skeletal retardation and delayed puberty in children with bronchial asthma or atopic dermatitis is generally attributed to the severity of the disorder. However, a series of findings indicate a causal influence of the atopy and the existence of atopic skeletal retardation per se.The observation that children with atopic disorders, whether bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis or allergic rhinitis, exhibit a rate of short stature that is twice to five times higher than normal indicates atopic and thus genetically determined influe

Aberrant Levels of Hematopoietic/Neuronal Growth and Differentiation Factors in Euthyroid Women at Risk for Autoimmune Thyroid Disease.

BACKGROUND: Subjects at risk for major mood disorders have a higher risk to develop autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) and vice-versa, implying a shared pathogenesis. In mood disorder patients, an abnormal profile of hematopoietic/neuronal growth factors is observed, suggesting that growth/differentiation abnormalities of these cell lineages may predispose to mood disorders. The first objective of our study was to investigate whether an aberrant profile of these hematopoietic/neuronal growth factors is also detectable in subjects at risk for AITD. A second objective was to study the inter relat

Targeted nanoparticle delivery of doxorubicin into placental tissues to treat ectopic pregnancies.

Abnormal trophoblast growth can cause life-threatening disorders such as ectopic pregnancy, choriocarcinoma, and placenta accreta. EnGeneIC Delivery Vehicles (EDVs) are nanocells that can promote tissue-specific delivery of drugs and may be useful to medically treat such disorders. The objective of this study was to determine whether EDVs loaded with the chemotherapeutic doxorubicin and targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR, very highly expressed on the placental surface) can regress placental cells in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo. In female SCID mice, EGFR-targeted EDVs induced

Neurotrophic factors in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathies are common and frequently debilitating disorders which may include various subpopulations of motor, sensory or autonomic neurons depending on the underlying aetiology. They are likely to be the first group of neurological disorders to be successfully treated with growth factors since peripheral nerves are accessible to proteins given systemically. Preclinical and ongoing clinical trials of nerve growth factor (NGF) suggest that it will be useful for the treatment of diabetic, toxic and compressive sensory neuropathies. At appropriate doses NGF has no significant side ef

Growth curves for height for diastrophic dysplasia, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, and pseudoachondroplasia.

Analysis of retrospective growth data from 72 patients with diastrophic dysplasia, 62 patients with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita and 61 patients with pseudoachondroplasia permitted the establishment of preliminary reference growth standards for height for each disorder. In addition, a comparison of mean height curves for these three disorders and achondroplasia revealed dissimilarities in growth patterns.

Long-term outcome following pediatric liver transplantation for metabolic disorders.

In order to determine long-term outcome, including survival, growth and development, following liver transplantation in children with metabolic disorders, we retrospectively reviewed charts of 54 children with metabolic disorders evaluated from 1989-2005 for presenting symptoms, transplantation timing and indications, survival, metabolic parameters, growth, and development. Thirty-three patients underwent liver transplantation (12 received combined liver-kidney transplants) at a median age of 21 months. At a median follow-up of 3.6 yr, patient survival was 100%, and liver and kidney allograft

SOFT Syndrome: The First Case in Iran.

Primordial dwarfism (PD) is a group of rare genetically heterogeneous disorders consisted of disorders with intrauterine growth retardation continued through the life. SOFT syndrome with characteristics of short stature, onychodysplasia, facial dysmorphism, and hypotrichosis has been presented as a subtype of PD. Only 20 cases of SOFT syndrome have been reported in world to date, but none of them were not in Iran. Our case was 6.5-year-old girl with a complaint of growth retardation including height of 97 cm (Z = -4.6 standard deviation [SD]) and weight of 14 kg (Z = -4 SD) referred to growth
