Effects of a 4-week combined breathing control and self-talk intervention on neural activity and coping skills in athletes: a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Effective coping skills are essential for athletes aiming to achieve peak performance. Breathing control and self-talk are recognized as commonly used psychological interventions to support coping. However, their combined effects on neurophysiological and psychological markers have not been examined. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a 4-week combined breathing control and self-talk intervention on electroencephalogram (EEG) activity and coping skills in elite national-level athletes. METHOD: Twenty-six athletes (11 swimmers and 15 gymnasts) were randomized to an experimental

[Lesions of the growth plate caused by sports stress].

Besides the positive physiological, psychological and social aspects, sports activities in adolescents bear the risk of injuries and overuse of the locomotor system. Previous examinations have shown that increased stress to the growth plates by sports activities, in relation to the intensity of strain during growth spurts, can influence normal growth. In female gymnasts, hormonal changes can decrease the growth speed and long-term growth. On the other hand, during more intensive phases of growth the column cartilage of the growth plate is the weakest part of the locomotor system because of the

[Patellar fracture after patellar stabilization].

We report on a 20-year-old female patient with a fracture of the patella after she fell on"black ice" 2 months after medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction for patellar instability. For reconstruction of the MPFL, a single hamstring tendon graft was passed through the medial intermuscular septum and was fixed to the superomedial pole of the patella. The fracture was reduced by wire cerclage. Intraoperatively it was shown that the fracture line went through the patellar drill hole. No complications occurred during the further postoperative period. The literature contains only a fe

Sports and leisure-time physical activity in pregnancy and birth weight: a population-based study.

We examined the association between sports and other leisure-time physical activities during pregnancy and birth weight of babies born after 37 completed weeks of gestation. All Danish-speaking pregnant women attending routine antenatal care at the Department of Obstetrics, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, from August 1989 to September 1991 were invited to participate in the study. A total of 4458 healthy women who delivered after 37 completed gestational weeks participated in this study. The associations between sports (0, 1-2, 3+ h/week) or leisure-time physical activity (sedentary, ligh

[Elbow injuries in childhood].

Fractures and dislocations of the elbow are some of the most common injuries in childhood and adolescence. The majority occur in sport and play activities, e.g., a fall from gymnastics apparatus or a bike, or from popular sports items, such as skateboards or in-line skates. The injuries can be divided into pure dislocations of the joint and fractures of the distal humerus, proximal radius and ulna, or combinations of both. In addition, extra- and intraarticular fracture types are defined, with the latter as partial or complete joint lesions. Dislocations of the elbow joint or the radial head c…

Evaluating the prevalence of eating disorder risk and low energy availability risk in collegiate athletes.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders and low energy availability independently and negatively impact eating behaviors and attitudes and overall health. Screening provides early identification of athletes suffering from these conditions, yet few studies have evaluated both simultaneously, and none have investigated eating disorder and low energy availability in the context of sex or sport type. This study determined the prevalence of eating disorder and low energy availability risk in collegiate athletes at a large National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 university and the variation

Japanese radio calisthenics prevents the reduction of skeletal muscle mass volume in people with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Reduction of muscle mass and strength is an important treatment target for patients with type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have reported that high-intensity resistance training improves physical function; however, all patients found it difficult to perform high-intensity resistance training. Radio calisthenics, considered as therapeutic exercises to promote health in Japan, are simple exercises that can be performed regardless of age and help move the muscles and joints of the whole body effectively according to the rhythm of radio. We investigated the efficacy of radio calisthenics f

Intensive training in young athletes. The orthopaedic surgeon's viewpoint.

A young athlete's musculoskeletal system is unique, in that it is not only growing, but is giving support to the growing soft tissues as well. With this in mind, it is easily understood that the fastest growing areas of children skeletal system are at greater risk of injury. No controlled longitudinal studies have yet been performed about the long term effects of injuries occurring in intensively trained young athletes. During the growth spurt, a dissociation between bone matrix formation and bone mineralisation occurs, thus leaving the child with the risks of chronic moderate-to-high overload
