Isolation of Epidermal and Hair Follicle Melanocytes.

Here, we describe the isolation of epidermal melanocytes and hair follicle melanocytes from human skin tissue. Epidermal and hair follicle melanocytes are two distinct populations of melanocytes that are contained within the skin and the hair follicle, with differing yet overlapping roles. Epidermal melanocytes are normally isolated from the epidermis of vellus-haired skin tissue, for example, face, breast, abdomen, while hair follicle melanocytes are derived from the outer root sheath (ORS) of the middle/lower terminal anagen hair follicles of the scalp. These methods utilize ethically source…

Overview of Short Peptides for Hair Loss.

Hair serves essential functions, including mechanical sensing, head protection, and body temperature regulation, while also playing a significant role in human aesthetics. However, factors such as hormonal imbalances, autoimmune disorders, infections, and psychological stress contribute to the widespread issue of hair loss, particularly among the elderly, adversely affecting self-confidence and self-esteem. Although treatments such as minoxidil, finasteride, and dutasteride have received regulatory approval, their associated side effects, such as sexual dysfunction, neuropsychiatric issues, an…

Assessment and treatment of adolescent hair loss.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hair loss in adolescents carries significant psychosocial impact, and it is often underrecognized and managed without adolescent-specific approaches. This review describes recent advances in diagnostics, pathophysiology, and therapies to improve diagnosis and management of adolescent alopecia. RECENT FINDINGS: Trichoscopy and ultraviolet-enhanced follicular dermoscopy improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce invasive testing. Androgenetic alopecia is linked to obesity and genetic predisposition; topical minoxidil remains first-line with low-dose oral minoxidil use supported i…

Caffeine Supplementation and Hair: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: While caffeine has been proposed to stimulate hair growth, its safety and efficacy remain unclear. This systematic review evaluates the effects of caffeine interventions on hair loss and growth outcomes. METHODS: A systematic review of seven databases, including PubMed, Medline, and Embase, was conducted in August 2023. Original studies investigating caffeine's effects on hair loss were included. Study quality was assessed using the National Institute of Health Study Quality Assessment Tools. Outcomes of interest included caffeine intervention types and their effects on hair growt…

Hair and Nail Pathology in Primary Care.

Hair and nail complaints are common in the primary care clinic. Although not a comprehensive assessment of all conditions, this article addresses the most common hair and nail pathologies seen in primary care clinics. It discusses physiologic explanations for pathology to provide clinicians with a framework for narrowing their differential diagnosis. It also provides guidance for identifying significant pathology that would best be served through referrals to specialist providers.

Autophagy Dysfunction: The Kernel of Hair Loss?

Autophagy is recognized as a crucial regulatory process, instrumental in the removal of senescent, dysfunctional, and damaged cells. Within … se prevention and treatment. In this context, we examine the role of autophagy and mitophagy during hair follicle cycles, closely scrutinizing their potential association with hair loss. We also conduct a thorough review of the regulatory mechanisms behind autophagy and mitophagy, highlighting their interaction with hair follicle stem cells and dermal …

Postpartum hair loss is associated with anxiety.

AIM: This study examined the relationship between postpartum hair loss and psychological symptoms. METHODS: This questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study included postpartum women who had delivered at two facilities and completed the questionnaire 10-18 months after delivery. Study protocols were sent by mail in two parts. Baseline characteristics and information regarding the pregnancy, delivery, childcare, and postpartum hair loss were obtained via a questionnaire. Psychological symptoms were assessed via the Whooley Questions, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2-item, and Edinburgh Postnatal …

Impact of Hair Transplantation on Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia is defined as partial or complete hair loss. The most common form is androgenetic alopecia, which occurs in both men and women. Despite the nonsurgical options available for treatment, the only permanent solution is hair transplantation. Hair loss has been shown to have significant psychological consequences associated with loss of self-confidence, poor self-image and difficulties in social functioning. We aim to examine the effect of hair transplantation on quality of life and psychosocial functioning. METHODS: Forty-eight patients with androgenetic alopecia were enrolle…

Impact of Thyroid Dysfunction on Hair Disorders.

Hair loss is a problem for everyone, regardless of their age or sex. The three most prevalent types of hair loss, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and androgenetic alopecia, have been associated with a variety of risk factors. Strong evidence links thyroid hormones (THs) to hair loss. THs control the growth, differentiation, metabolism, and thermogenesis of body cells. The skin is a significant target organ for THs; however, the cellular and molecular causes of thyroid dysfunction-related skin diseases remain unknown. Hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and drug-induced hypothyroidism can indu…

Hair and Nail Conditions: Hypertrichosis and Hirsutism.

Hypertrichosis and hirsutism can be signs of underlying conditions, some of which may be life-threatening. They also can result in significant psychosocial distress for patients. Hypertrichosis refers to excessive hair growth beyond normal variation for a patient's age, sex, or race or for a particular body area. Hirsutism refers to an abnormal excess of hair growth solely in androgen-dependent areas of the body in females. The standard for hirsutism assessment is the modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mFG) score. Hirsutism can be idiopathic or associated with endocrine conditions, most commonly polyc…

Localized hair loss in infancy: a review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The current review will address the different causes of localized hair loss in infancy. The data presented here will provide clinicians with the latest understanding of different disorders leading to localized hair loss and will provide recommendations for further management of infants who present with alopecia. RECENT FINDINGS: Localized hair loss in infancy is common, but its underlying causes vary greatly. Alopecia in infants can be categorized into congenital, genetic, inflammatory, mechanical, and physiologic causes. Decisions regarding further management are complex, …

Dimensions of a Living Cochlear Hair Bundle.

The hair bundle is the mechanosensory organelle of hair cells that detects mechanical stimuli caused by sounds, head motions, and fluid flows. Each hair bundle is an assembly of cellular-protrusions called stereocilia, which differ in height to form a staircase. Stereocilia have different heights, widths, and separations in different species, sensory organs, positions within an organ, hair-cell types, and even within a single hair bundle. The dimensions of the stereociliary assembly dictate how the hair bundle responds to stimuli. These hair-bundle properties have been measured previously only…

Growth Hormone and the Human Hair Follicle.

Ever since the discoveries that human hair follicles (HFs) display the functional peripheral equivalent of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, exhibit elements of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, and even generate melatonin and prolactin, human hair research has proven to be a treasure chest for the exploration of neurohormone functions. However, growth hormone (GH), one of the dominant neurohormones of human neuroendocrine physiology, remains to be fully explored in this context. This is interesting since it has long been appreciated clinically that excessive GH serum levels indu…
