Bone ankylosis is a pathological feature that may occur in many chronic diseases involving joints. In paleopathology, it is therefore challenging to attribute such a change to a specific condition. Here, we illustrate the differential diagnosis by discussing the lesions observed on an incomplete skeleton from the Roman period, recovered from the catacomb of Saints Peter and Marcellinus (Rome, Italy). The skeleton exhibits several bone changes, including ankylosis on both feet and the left hand. The right tarsal fusion is accompanied by soft tissue ossifications involving the plantar aponeurosi

The hands and forearms are frequent sites of burn injury, and due to the high concentration of superficial tendons, bones, and joints, flaps are frequently needed to cover defects in these areas. We present a patient who suffered remote electrical injury to the right forearm which later developed into an open wound with exposed tendon. Successful coverage of this defect was accomplished with an islanded fasciocutaneous flap based on perforating arterial branches of the radial artery, which was harvested from an area of burn injury. Surgical treatment of hand and forearm wounds with axial pedic

Delta phalanges are unusual, shortened bones of the hands and feet with abnormal epiphyses and diaphyses. Here, we report on a patient with a unique multiple congenital anomaly syndrome that includes brachydactyly consisting of multiple delta phalanges in several digits of the hands and feet. The patient, who was born to consanguineous parents, had several other congenital anomalies, including butterfly vertebrae, craniofacial dysmorphism, and coarctation of the aorta. We have called this distinctive condition "brachydactylic multiple delta phalanges plus syndrome." Although no other member of

Bone metastasis in the hand is rare. The etiology is quite different from that of metastasis to other bones; bronchogenic carcinoma is by far the most frequent case. Distal phalanges are mainly involved with irregular osteolysis and cortical destruction. Differential diagnosis of phalangeal metastasis includes osteomyelitis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The prognosis is always that of metastatic bronchial cancer with an average survival of three months. Treatment may involve distal digital amputation or antalgic radiotherapy. A case of bronchogenic carcinoma with metastasis to the thumb is p

Endolymphatic hydrops is the characteristic morphopathology observed at postmortem examination of temporal bones of Meniere's disease. Surgical induction of endolymphatic hydrops in the guinea pig provides a reproducible animal model for the investigation of some effects of endolymphatic hydrops on inner ear function. Episodic and incapacitating vertigo are classic features of Meniere's disease, although very limited vestibular dysfunction has ever been described for the animal model. On the other hand, the auditory deficits peculiar to Meniere's disease, including fluctuant sensitivity losses

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scanning was performed along the axis of the third metacarpal bone of the non-dominant hand and including metacarpal bones 2, 3, 4 and 5. The Bone Mineral Density (BMD) was calculated for the distal 1/4 of each metacarpal bone. Ten patients with seropositive, erosive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 10 healthy, sex- and age-matched persons were investigated twice. The average BMD in RA patients was 73.6% of the value found in normals. The coefficient of variation on double determinations (in patients and controls) was 0.9-3.0%. We suggest that dual energy X-ray ab

The results of conventional x-ray examination and skeleton scintiscanning in 32 patients with multiple or monostotic affection of the bones in plasmocytoma in primary diagnosis and after radiation treatment of individual osseous foci, are presented in a comparative study. 15% of the roentgenologically established defects could not be detected via scintiscan. Advantages of conventional x-ray examination are greater accuracy on the extension and danger of fracture or identification of existing fractures of osseous foci. On the other hand, the effects of radiation therapy after high-voltage treat

INTRODUCTION: The following report describes a rare case of giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone that presented in the distal phalanx of the thumb. GCT of the bone is a relatively rare, and typically benign condition that presents most frequently in the metaphysis of long bones in women age 30-50 years old. There are only three other instances in the literature describing GCT of the bone presenting in the distal phalanx of the thumb. Although rare, delayed or missed diagnosis can be very debilitating to the patient.
CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old male laborer who is right hand dominant and works wi

We measured the alignment of the nails in the hands of 100 normal adults with the interphalangeal joints extended and the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints at 0 degrees and 90 degrees. All fingers were naturally supinated (i.e. rotated towards the thumb), the index and little being the most supinated. When examining individual hands in MCP joint extension, only 17% of hands had all nails parallel. With the MCP joints flexed, this improved to 56%. If the little finger was excluded, this improved to 78%. When comparing matching fingers from the two hands, 76% of little, 83% of ring, 77% of middle

INTRODUCTION: Chronic inflammation combined with glucocorticoid treatment and immobilization puts juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) patients at risk of impaired growth and reduced bone mineral density (BMD). Conventional methods for evaluating bone age and BMD are time-consuming or come with additional costs and radiation exposure. In addition, an automated measurement of bone age and BMD is likely to be more consistent than visual evaluation. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of an automated method for determination of bone age and (cortical) bone mineral density (cBMD) in

Thyroid acropachy is a rare complication of autoimmune thyroid disease with characteristic imaging findings. Clinically, it presents as nail clubbing, swelling of digits and toes, almost always in association with thyroid ophthalmopathy and dermopathy. On radiographs, it manifests as prominent irregular and spiculated periosteal new bone formation in the hands and feet. We present a 52-year-old man with history of Graves' disease who presented with swelling of the hands and feet. Radiographs of the hands and feet revealed marked diffuse soft tissue edema and characteristic periosteal new bone

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of quantitatively assessed bone SPECT/CT parameters for predicting the success of conservative treatment for symptomatic basal joint arthritis of the thumb.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-eight patients (128 hands) with symptomatic basal joint arthritis of the thumb who underwent bone SPECT/CT scans within 4 weeks after their initial visit and completed conservative treatment for more than 6 months between April 2019 and April 2023 were retrospectively enrolled. PRWHE (patient-rated wrist/hand evaluation) was evaluated in all patients bef

Tophaceous gout can represent a major problem for hand surgeons when it turns into aggressive nodules, spreading and destroying soft tissue and bone. The combination of ablative and reconstructive surgery may also be complex when the patient refuses amputations and multiple segments are involved. We present a difficult case, where a customized approach, chosen according to the different features of the osteoarticular and tendon involvement of fingers, adopted different solutions for the four affected rays. A patient suffering from severe gout arthritis with osteoarticular destruction in both h

INTRODUCTION: Phalangeal fractures are the most common fractures of the hand and in particular the proximal phalanx of the long fingers is the most involved. These fractures can ben conservatively managed but, when the fracture pattern is considered unstable, surgical treatment is recommended. However, there is no consensus in literature about the proper surgical option for extra-articular proximal phalanx fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We compared clinical and radiographical results after treatment of 75 cases of extra-articular proximal phalanx fractures using three different surgical tec

Background: The purpose of our study was to review a series of patients with scaphoid fractures to determine whether there was an association between lunate morphology and progression to delayed union or nonunion when treated operatively or nonoperatively. Secondary aims included evaluation of the relationship between lunate morphology and scaphoid fracture location. Methods: A retrospective review of all patients with a diagnosis of scaphoid fracture was performed at our institution between 2014 and 2017. Medical records and radiographs were evaluated to determine lunate morphology, scaphoid

An assessment of the bone age can be made in different manners. Numerical methods calculating the number of existing ossification centers are to inaccurate. The use of "age-of-appearance" tables gives a more accurate evaluation. In both methods, however, x-ray films of several body parts must be made. Therefore, they are complicated and lead to a higher patient radiation exposure. Methods using hand and wrist as a representative area of the whole skeleton are of greater value for routine bone-age assessments. There is a wide-spread use of the Greulich-Pyle atlas. The atlas-method is fully suff
