Promotion of Preventive Measures in Public Nursery Schools: Lessons From the H1N1 Pandemic.

Nursery schools serve as reservoirs of transmission of infectious diseases, and teachers should be able to implement and monitor hygiene measures to prevent them. The aim of the present study was to assess the compliance of nursery school teachers on promoting preventive interventions and to identify associated factors, during the novel H1N1 influenza pandemic. A secondary objective was to evaluate their knowledge and vaccination status regarding the novel virus. A cross-sectional study was performed, with the use of a predesigned anonymous, questionnaire, and distributed to all public nursery

[Role of anesthesiologist in prevention of perioperative infection].

Perioprative infection has a significant impact on outcome of surgical patients. Anesthesiologists have roles in reducing infection by application of appropriate prophylactic measures. Hand hygiene is a prerequisite when contacting patients in the operating room. Bundled-preventive approaches should be applied during insertion of intravascular lines, specifically central venous lines. Application of appropriate skin preparation and/or dressings with antiseptics is important. Appropriate selection of antimicrobials depending on surgeries and patients' background, and avoidance of periopeative h

[Implementation of the strategy "Clean Care is Safer Care" in a third level hospital in Medellín, Colombia].

INTRODUCTION: Hand hygiene is the most cost-effective and simple measure of preventing healthcare associated infections (HAI). The approach to improve low compliance must be through multimodal interventions such as the "Clean Care is Safer Care" strategy (WHO). AIM: To estimate the efficacy of a multimodal strategy in improving hand hygiene in five wards of a tertiary care hospital in Medellín, Colombia (2008-2010). METHODS: Quasi-experimental before-after study. RESULTS: Hand hygiene compliance significantly increased after the intervention (82 to 89%, p = 0.007). The knowledge score incre

Outbreak of invasive group A streptococcus infection: contaminated patient curtains and cross-infection on an ear, nose and throat ward.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of group A streptococcus (GAS) infections may occur in healthcare settings and have been documented in surgical, obstetrics and gynaecology, and burns units. The environment may serve as a reservoir and facilitate transmission via contaminated equipment. AIM: To describe the investigation and control of an outbreak of healthcare-associated GAS infection on an ear, nose and throat (ENT) ward in a tertiary referral centre. METHODS: Two patients with laryngeal cancer developed invasive GAS infection (bacteraemia) with associated tracheostomy wound cellulitis within a 48 h

Intervention with an infection control bundle to reduce transmission of influenza-like illnesses in a thai preschool.

BACKGROUND: Infection-control interventions are needed to minimize transmission of influenza-like illness (ILI) and other infections in settings where children are in close proximity. SETTING: A 240-children Thai kindergarten. METHODS: Three-year, quasi-experimental study was conducted to assess the association between the use of a bundle of 4 infection control interventions and the incidence of ILI, diarrheal illnesses, and hand-foot-mouth infections among preschool children. The numbers of incident infections were calculated for the preintervention year (period 1), the immediate postinterv

Functional dependence as a contributing factor for patient hand contamination by multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) in acute care.

OBJECTIVE: Patient hands' contribution to disease transmission in healthcare settings is an important, understudied topic. We assessed correlation between patient functional dependence and hand contamination with multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) in acute-care settings. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: Secondary, cross-sectional analyses of 399 general medicine patients enrolled in two tertiary-care hospitals over a six-month period. Our predictor was patient functional status evaluated using Katz Activities of Daily Living scale, scored as follows: functionally independent (scored 0), mod

Surveillance in hospitalized children with infectious diseases in Japan: Pre- and post-coronavirus disease 2019.

INTRODUCTION: The epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rapidly spread worldwide, and the various infection control measures have a significant influence on the spread of many infectious diseases. However, there have been no multicenter studies on how the number of hospitalized children with various infectious diseases changed before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 in Japan. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, prospective survey for hospitalized pediatric patients in 18 hospitals in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, from July 2019 to February 2021. We defined July 2019 to February 202

Analysis of Gender-Dependent Personal Protective Behaviors in a National Sample: Polish Adolescents' COVID-19 Experience (PLACE-19) Study.

During the coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the basic strategy that is recommended to reduce the spread of the disease is to practice proper hand hygiene and personal protective behaviors, but among adolescents, low adherence is common. The present study aimed to assess the gender-dependent hand hygiene and personal protective behaviors in a national sample of Polish adolescents. The Polish Adolescents' COVID-19 Experience (PLACE-19) Study was conducted in a group of 2323 secondary school students (814 males, 1509 females). Schools were chosen based on the random quota sampling proc

Occupational skin diseases among dental nurses.

Out of 923 female dental nurses in the Helsinki district, 799 were interviewed using a computer-assisted telephone interview. A structured questionnaire was used to inquire about skin, respiratory symptoms, atopy, work history and methods, and exposure at work. The 328 nurses, who reported work-related dermatitis on their hands, forearms or face, were invited to an interview by an occupational physician; 245 nurses participated. 31 nurses had previously been diagnosed with an occupational skin disease (OSD). 133 nurses with a suspected OSD were selected for further clinical examinations with p

Irritancy of scrubbing up for surgery with or without a brush.

Hand washing is an indispensable procedure for surgical nurses. Although scrubbing up with a brush is preferable to prevent infections, it is not clear how irritating to the skin scrubbing with a brush is compared with hand washing without a brush. TEWL, high frequency conductance and pH were measured on the hand skin of the same group of nurses before and after daily hand washing for 11 days in different seasons, which were chosen as favourable and unfavourable periods for the condition of hand skin, namely the early summer and autumn. Additionally, we compared the antimicrobial effects on th

Poisoning with 1-propanol and 2-propanol.

1-Propanol and 2-propanol are isomers of an alcohol with three carbons. They are colorless liquids with a sweet odor. 1-Propanol is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase to propionic acid and presents with metabolic acidosis and elevated anion gap, whereas 2-propanol is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase to acetone and presents with rapidly developing (within 3-4 h after exposure) ketosis and ketonuria but without metabolic acidosis. We report a patient who simultaneously ingested a lethal dose of 1-propanol and 2-propanol as a hand disinfectant in hospital. The patient lost consciousness and

Characterization of Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria innocua from a vegetable processing plant by RAPD and REA.

The incidence of Listeria monocytogenes in a vegetable processing plant was investigated over a 23-month period. Frozen ready-to-eat vegetable samples, well as the plant environment, were sampled. The molecular subtyping techniques, Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Restriction Endonuclease Analyses (REA), were performed to help investigate the origin and routes of Listeria dissemination. The low and sporadic incidence of L. monocytogenes made it impossible to establish an epidemiological sequence in the processing plant, though a case of cross-contamination between tomato and ratato

Infection Control Practices of Dentists in an Urbanized City in the Philippines during the COVID-19 Pandemic within the Period of General Community Quarantine.

BACKGROUND: The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has instigated a profound public health crisis, particularly affecting professionals like dentists who, due to their close interaction with saliva-a potential viral reservoir-and the aerosols generated during specific procedures, face elevated risks of infection. To mitigate this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) have established guidelines for averting cross-infection in dental settings. OBJECTIVE: This study, conducted in an urbanized Metro Manila City, delves into the infe
