Closing the Health Policy Implementation Gap With Artificial Intelligence.

IMPORTANCE: Health care policies often fail to achieve their goals due to implementation challenges attributable to workforce constraints, fragmented health information systems, and administrative complexity. This Special Communication proposes a framework for how artificial intelligence (AI) tools could support effective health care policy implementation, using the implementation of Medicaid work requirements under the Budget Reconciliation Act of 2025 as an example. OBSERVATIONS: Opportunities for AI-augmented health care policy implementation include executing key policy processes, such as

The GLBT Health Access Project: a state-funded effort to improve access to care.

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Health Access Project is a unique public-private collaboration working to eliminate barriers to health care for the GLBT community, foster development of comprehensive, culturally appropriate health promotion policies and health care services for GLBT people and their families, and expand appropriate data collection on GLBT health. Funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the project developed community standards of practice for provision of quality health care services to GLBT clients. A health access training curriculum was d

Health promotion: Alcohol and drug misuse prevention.

Currently, average apparent consumption of alcohol for all persons older than 14 is 10 percent higher than 10 years ago, and is equivalent to about 2.75 gallons of ethanol per person per year. Approximately 10 million adult Americans (i.e., 7 percent of those 18 or older) can be considered problem drinkers. Youthful problem drinkers, aged 14 to 17, are estimated to number more than 3 million and comprise 19 percent of this age group. In addition to the social costs, the economic costs to society as a result of alcohol misuse are substantial--an estimated +49.4 billion in 1977. Ten percent of a

CDC Grand Rounds: Addressing Preparedness Challenges for Children in Public Health Emergencies.

Recent public health emergencies including Hurricane Katrina (2005), the influenza H1N1 pandemic (2009), and the Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa (2014–2015) have demonstrated the importance of multiple-level emergency planning and response. An effective response requires integrating coordinated contributions from community-based health care providers, regional health care coalitions, state and local health departments, and federal agency initiatives. This is especially important when planning for the needs of children, who make up 23% of the U.S. population (1) and have unique need

Setting goals and targets for performance standards within the Swedish health care system.

The development of any health care system towards setting goals and targets and intended outcomes--with national guidelines, a legislative framework, limited resources, consumer influence and competitive forces--makes great demands on the control mechanisms required. The Swedish health care system has no tradition of goal formulation of this type. Hence, the purpose of this article is to clarify the goal-setting process of performance standards, and to examine whether goal setting is a relevant method within the organization of a Swedish county council. Goal setting can be seen partly as a con

Factors associated with advance care planning among older women in Southwest Florida.

As the nation's population continues to age, many older women will face care needs that can be anticipated in advance. However, little is known about the advance care plans of older women and the characteristics of those who plan. This study utilized a stratified random sampling design to survey older women (n = 124) in the state of Florida regarding their attitudes toward future care and planning behavior in social-environmental, health, and financial domains. Regression analyses were conducted to determine factors most predictive of attitudes toward future care and planning behavior by domai

Implementation of clinical supervision in action: Part 3: the development of a model.

Implementation has been observed to be crucial to the successful introduction of clinical supervision. Despite its importance, there is limited literature which articulates principles or process to guide it. The first and second parts of this three-part paper present findings of a qualitative exploration of the implementation of clinical supervision in a rural mental health service. The findings were discussed in light of the Driscoll model of implementation. While this model provided a valuable tool to interpret some aspects of the findings, its focus was primarily on the preimplementation st

Implementation performance of routine insecticide-treated nets distribution through the health facilities in mainland Tanzania: 5 years (2018-2022) experience.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) through health facilities helps increase and sustain access to ITNs, targeting biologically vulnerable populations. However, their effectiveness in terms of issuance rates has yet to be assessed over time in Tanzania. METHODS: Monthly DHIS-2 data on ITN distribution from health facilities were extracted from 6,790 facilities from January 2018 to December 2022. The Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) was used to model the marginal performance trend over time for ANC and EPI separately. RESULTS: Across 5 years, ANC had an issuan
