Experimentally induced mood changes and simultaneously changing heart rate variability (HRV).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between rapidly changing emotional states and simultaneously measured heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS: Eighty-two healthy subjects underwent a mood induction procedure while ECG recordings were made. The subjects were asked to look at an image for 30 s and then instructed to visualize the image again with closed eyes for 1 min. RR intervals were calculated as the time between two adjacent R-peaks. HRV was calculated by taking the square root of the mean absolute differences between RR intervals for each 10-s segment. This value was then logarit…

What is the Target Resting Heart Rate in Guidelines on Hypertension?

It is widely recognized that not only high blood pressure (BP) but also increased resting heart rate (RHR) impairs prognosis in patients with arterial hypertension (HTN). This study aims to answer 5 questions regarding the guidelines on HTN: 1. 'Is the significance of high RHR in HTN acknowledged?'; 2. 'Is there a recommendation to decrease RHR in chronic antihypertensive treatment?'; 3. 'Which antihypertensive medication is preferred to diminish high RHR in HTN patients?' 4. 'What is the treatment threshold value of RHR in patients with HTN?' and 5. 'Is there a recommendation for target RHR i…

Evaluating Age-Predicted Maximal Heart Rate Versus Tachycardia in SIRS Criterion.

BackgroundTachycardia, defined by SIRS criteria as a heart rate above 90, is commonly seen in numerous unrelated conditions, making its utility for screening in conditions like sepsis poor due to lack of sensitivity or specificity. Rather than using a single tachycardia value as a criterion, we evaluated the use of age-predicted maximal heart rate to individualize excessive tachycardia as a function of estimated physiologic reserve and to stratify mortality risk.MethodsA retrospective analysis was performed on a cohort of 62,327 admitted ICU patients from the MIMIC-IV dataset, with the primary…

Heart rate variability: longitudinal cardioautonomic physiomarker in congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

RATIONALE: Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is caused by PHOX2B gene variants, resulting in highly variable cardiac autonomic dysregulation, including abrupt sinus pauses and risk of sudden unexpected death. The relationship between age, PHOX2B genotype, and cardiac autonomic dysfunction remains unknown, and CCHS-related physiomarkers are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of age and genotype severity on longitudinal heart rate variability (HRV), a noninvasive measure of cardiovascular autonomic function, in CCHS. METHODS: Longitudinal HRV measures were calculated fro…

Association between placental microplastic burden and intrapartum fetal heart rate abnormalities.

Microplastic (MP) contamination has emerged as a global environmental concern, with increasing evidence of its presence in human placental tissue. However, no previous human studies have directly evaluated the association between placental microplastic exposure and fetal cardiac physiology during labor. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between placental MP accumulation and the occurrence of intrapartum non-reassuring fetal heart rate (NRFHR). A prospective cohort study was conducted among 2738 pregnant women recruited from China between 2023 and 2024. Placental MPs were quantifi…

Heart rate variability analysis in comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA).

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and insomnia are the two most prevalent sleep disorders, often co-occurring in a condition termed comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA). While autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction resulting from each of these disorders has been separately established through heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, the specific overnight ANS alterations due to COMISA have not been explored. This study aims to characterize nocturnal ANS alterations attributable to COMISA through time and frequency HRV analysis, distinguishing them from those of isolated insomnia or OSA. A …

Effects of sugammadex on heart rate variability in anesthetized male rats.

The administration of sugammadex has been associated with bradycardia and rarely asystole; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We examined heart rate variability (HRV) as an index of autonomic nervous system activity and investigated the effects of sugammadex on HRV in α-chloralose and urethane anesthetized male rats. In protocol 1, we examined the effect of intravenous administration of sugammadex (10 mg/kg) alone. In protocol 2, sugammadex was administered 3 min after the administration of rocuronium bromide. In protocol 3, the effect of sugammadex was assessed after vagotomy.…

Extraction of compression indices from maternal-fetal heart rate simultaneous signals.

Intrapartum asphyxia is responsible for approximately 900 000 deaths per year worldwide. These numbers show the urgency of investing in the quality of fetal health care. The heart rate signal is a complex signal and sometimes behaves unpredictably. Thus, it becomes relevant to study approaches that take into account their complexity, namely non-linear compression-based methods. In this work, feature extraction was based on two approaches: univariate and bivariate. The univariate approach is concerned with the extraction of fetal, maternal and maternal-fetal compression ratios and the bivariate…

Controlling heart rate variability for respiratory effects in ambulatory psychophysiological measurements.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is the heart period variability observed in synchrony with respiration. RSA amplitude is widely used in psychophysiological research to non-invasively index cardiac vagal activity. However, RSA measures are significantly affected by respiratory behavior, even in the absence of changes in cardiac vagal activity. Fifty-to-sixty percent of the variation in RSA can be attributed to respiration rate and tidal volume. This poses a notable challenge for ambulatory RSA measurement where respiratory behavior cannot be experimentally controlled and can show substantial

Heart Rate Variability in Professional and Semiprofessional Soccer: A Scoping Review.

In modern soccer, fitness and fatigue monitoring tools tend to be focused on noninvasive, time-efficient and player-friendly measures. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been suggested as an effective method for monitoring training response and readiness to perform. However, there is still a lack of consensus on HRV monitoring when it comes to soccer. Thus, this scoping review aims to map existing evidence on HRV in professional and semiprofessional soccer settings, and to identify knowledge gaps to inform future research directions. A search of databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google …

Short-Term Effects of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback on Working Memory.

Drawing upon the well-documented impact of long-term heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) on psychophysiological responses, this study seeks to explore the short-term effects arising from a single HRVB session during and after paced breathing exercise. The research aligns with the neurovisceral integration model, emphasizing the link between heart rate variability (HRV) levels and cognitive performance. Therefore, a randomized controlled trial employing a between-subjects design was conducted with 38 participants. Each participant was assigned to either the paced breathing intervention gr…

Heart Rate Variability and Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a well-established surgical procedure used to treat significant coronary artery disease. Nevertheless, unfavorable cardiovascular events and complications, including cardiac arrhythmias may be observed in patients after CABG. Previous studies have revealed a relationship between risk of cardiac arrhythmias and abnormal heart rate variability (HRV), which reflects adverse alterations in cardiac autonomic functioning, that may occur in patients after a CABG procedure. The aim of this article was to provide a systematic review of the major res…

Heart Rate Variability to Automatically Identify Hyperbaric States Considering Respiratory Component.

This study's primary objective was to identify individuals whose physiological responses deviated from the rest of the study population by automatically monitoring atmospheric pressure levels to which they are exposed and using parameters derived from their heart rate variability (HRV). To achieve this, 28 volunteers were placed in a dry hyperbaric chamber, where they experienced varying pressures from 1 to 5 atmospheres, with five sequential stops lasting five minutes each at different atmospheric pressures. The HRV was dissected into two components: the respiratory component, which is linked…

Alzheimer Dementia Detection Based on Time-series Instability of Heart Rate.

Towards early detection of Alzheimer dementia (AD), this paper focuses on time-series instability of heart rate of AD patient, and proposes the AD detection method based on heart rate acquired by an unconstrained mattress sensor for daily life use. Through the human subject experiments on 124 days of heart rate of one AD patient and 39 days of heart rate of 21 healthy subjects, the following implication have been revealed: (1) an accuracy of the proposed AD detection method based on the time-series features of heart rate is approximately 98%; and (2) the time-series instability of heart rate i…
