Evaluation of the built environment at a children's convalescent hospital: development of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory parent and staff satisfaction measures for pediatric health care facilities.

In preparation for the design, construction, and postoccupancy evaluation of a new Children's Convalescent Hospital, focus groups were conducted and measurement instruments were developed to quantify and characterize parent and staff satisfaction with the built environment of the existing pediatric health care facility, a 30-year-old, 59-bed, long-term, skilled nursing facility dedicated to the care of medically fragile children with complex chronic conditions. The measurement instruments were designed in close collaboration with parents, staff, and senior management involved with the existing

[The natural history of a dural arteriovenous fistula associated with sinus thrombosis: a case report].

The patient, a 52-year-old man, complained of vertigo. CT scan revealed right cerebellar infarction and he was admitted to our hospital. MRI revealed a fresh thrombus in the right transverse sinus and angiography revealed the occlusion of the right transverse-sigmoid sinus. He complained of vertigo again and he was re-admitted to our hospital 4 months after the first admission. Angiography revealed a dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) of the right transverse-sigmoid sinus fed by the right occipital artery and the right transverse-sigmoid sinus was found to be recanalized. The angiography which

Transformations of self and sexuality: psychologically modified experiences in the context of forensic mental health.

Forensic mental health inpatients in medium-secure settings have a limited capacity for sexual expression during their stay in hospital. This is due to a number of factors, including a lack of willingness on behalf of staff to engage with sexual issues, as a result of safety fears and ambiguity regarding the ability of the patient to consent. Furthermore, UK forensic medium-secure units do not provide conjugal suites for patients to have sexual relations, with their spouse or other patients. To date, there is no empirical research on how forensic psychiatric patients (or service users) manage

The psychiatric liaison nurse in the general hospital: three models of practice.

The creation and implementation of the role of the psychiatric liaison nurse in three general hospitals are described. The historical evolution and theoretical bases of the role are reviewed, as well as the specific reasons for creation of such a role in each of the three hospitals. Three typical patient consultations by liaison nurses illustrate the need for provision of such services within the general hospital. Similarities in the implementation of the role of liaison nurse in the three hospitals are discussed.

The lived experiences of transgender and gender-diverse people in accessing publicly funded penile-inversion vaginoplasty in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Canada's health care systems underserve people who are transgender and gender diverse (TGD), leading to unique disparities not experienced by other patient groups, such as in accessing gender-affirmation surgery. We sought to explore the experiences of TGD people seeking and accessing gender-affirmation surgery at a publicly funded hospital in Canada to identify opportunities to improve the current system. METHODS: We used hermeneutic phenomenology according to Max van Manen to conduct this qualitative study. Between January and August 2022, we conducted interviews with TGD people

The role of medication noncompliance and adverse drug reactions in hospitalizations of the elderly.

We interviewed 315 consecutive elderly patients admitted to an acute care hospital to determine the percentage of elderly hospital admissions due to noncompliance with medication regimens or adverse drug reactions, their causes, consequences, and predictors. Eighty-nine of the elderly admissions (28.2%) were drug related, 36 due to noncompliance (11.4%), and 53 due to adverse drug reactions (16.8%). One hundred three patients had a history of noncompliance (32.7%). Factors statistically associated with a higher risk of hospitalization due to noncompliance were poor recall of medication regimen

Study protocol for a pragmatic trial of the Consult for Addiction Treatment and Care in Hospitals (CATCH) model for engaging patients in opioid use disorder treatment.

BACKGROUND: Treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) is highly effective, yet it remains dramatically underutilized. Individuals with OUD have disproportionately high rates of hospitalization and low rates of addiction treatment. Hospital-based addiction consult services offer a potential solution by using multidisciplinary teams to evaluate patients, initiate medication for addiction treatment (MAT) in the hospital, and connect patients to post-discharge care. We are studying the effectiveness of an addiction consult model [Consult for Addiction Treatment and Care in Hospitals (CATCH)] as a st

Factors affecting mental illness and social stress in hospital workers treating COVID-19: Paradoxical distress during pandemic era.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected all countries in the world. Hospital workers are at high risk of mental illness, such as anxiety and depression. Furthermore, they also face many social stresses, such as deterioration of human relations and income reduction. Apart from mental illness, these social stresses can reduce motivation and lead to voluntary absenteeism, which contribute to a collapse of medical systems. Thus, for maintaining medical systems, it is crucial to clarify risk factors for both mental illness and increased social stress among hospital workers.

Team Planning in Obstetrical Care for Women With Obesity.

This paper provides a practical perspective on some parts of care planning for pregnant women with obesity class III and beyond. Obesity affects childbirth, as there are medical risks to mother and fetus. Moreover, the psychological concerns of the mother and family require careful consideration, notably with an interprofessional team of obstetricians, midwives, anaesthesiologists, pediatricians, and lactation specialists, as well as learners. Pregnant women with obesity likely experience stigmatization and weight bias, as such the health care team should be cognizant of evidence-based medical
