Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia (LJSGH) is a kind of gingival hyperplasia with unique pathological manifestations. Its clinical manifestations are atypical, and the etiology and pathogenesis are unclear. No case report was reported in China. The diagnosis of this disease mainly relies on pathological testing, and recurrence may occur after treatment. The best treatment method still lacks medical evidence. This paper reports a case of LJSGH in a teenager and summarizes its clinical, pathological, and treatment through literature review. This work provides a reference for the …

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a genetic disease caused by an enzyme deficiency interrupting adrenal steroidogenesis. It most frequently involves 21-hydroxylase, which induces adrenal insufficiency with hyperandrogenism. Restoring hormonal balance is difficult with glucocorticoids, which are the gold-standard treatment. Strict normalization of conventional biomarkers (17-hydroxyprogesterone and delta-4 androstenedione) is often obtained at the cost of iatrogenic hypercortisolism. Optimizing the management of these patients first involves using more specific biomarkers of adrenal stero…

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency accounts for 95% of all CAH cases and is one of the most common inborn metabolic conditions. The introduction of life-saving glucocorticoid replacement therapy 70 years ago has changed the perception of CAH from a paediatric disorder into a lifelong, chronic condition affecting patients of all age groups. Alongside health problems that can develop during the time of paediatric care, there is an emerging body of evidence suggesting an increased risk of developing co-morbidities during adult life in patients with CAH. The m…

Primary bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (PBMAH), characterized by bilateral benign adrenal macronodules (>1 cm) potentially responsible for variable levels of cortisol excess, is a rare and heterogeneous disease. However, its frequency increases due to incidentally diagnosed cases on abdominal imaging carried out for reasons other than suspected adrenal disease. Mostly isolated, it can also be associated with dominantly inherited genetic conditions in rare cases. Considering the bilateral nature of adrenal involvement and the description of familial cases, the search of a genetic pr…

INTRODUCTION: Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is a rare proliferation of endothelial cells with uncertain etiology related to thrombus formation. Diagnosis is usually confirmed histopathologically. This condition has been previously described in the periocular region but not in the conjunctiva.
METHODS: It is a retrospective case series in which we evaluated seven patients with histopathologically confirmed IPEH cases. Data regarding the demographics, clinical presentation, radiological description, histopathological features including any IHC staining, suspected underl…

BACKGROUND: Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is an autossomic recessive condition. The most common mutation is in the CYP21A2 gene situated in chromosome 6, leading to a 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Clinical presentation ranges from light hyperandrogenism to potentially fatal adrenal salt-losing crisis. In this study, we describe a case of congenital adrenal hyperplasia in a male newborn.
CASE: A male newborn was brought to the emergency department owing to an episode of regurgitation after feeding, followed by pallor of the skin and decreased activity. In physical examination, he was hypotonic w…

Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) is an abnormal growth process that results in the development of mandibular asymmetry. The aetiopathogenesis of this entity is still unclear. Various factors including hormonal influences, intrauterine factors, trauma, infection, and genetics have been speculated to lead to the development of UCH. In genetic epidemiology, twins have been a valuable resource for investigating the genetic basis of complex traits and diseases. We present a case of mirror-image UCH in a pair of monozygotic twins, providing evidence of a possible genetic link for this mandibula…

Despite significant advances in understanding the role of the immune response in Opisthorchis viverrini-associated carcinogenesis, little is … ere observed in other layers. IgE plasma cells were rarely seen. The results suggest that mast cell hyperplasia occurs during cholecystitis in association with opisthorchiasis and may play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Lobular endocervical glandular hyperplasia (LEGH) was first reported as a benign proliferative disorder of the uterine cervix. However, it currently remains unclear whether it has the biological characteristics of pyloric metaplasia or precursor of minimal deviation adenocarcinoma (MDA)/gastric-type mucinous cervical adenocarcinoma (GAS). Therefore, in the present study we performed whole-exome sequencing on three cases of LEGH collected by laser-microdissection from the frozen tissue sections of surgically removed uteri. Analysis of the results identified 50 somatic variants. After several fi…

BACKGROUND: Non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NC-CAH) is a recessive autosomal disease caused by a deficiency of adrenal steroidogenesis enzymes. It must be distinguished from classical CAH, either simple virilising or salt-wasting, diagnosed during the neonatal period and responsible for potentially lethal disorders of sexual differentiation. NC-CAH presents a simpler and less specific clinical picture. Herein, we present two cases comprising twin girls consulting for diffuse hypertrichosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two 5-year-old twin girls were seen at our consultation for increas…

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is often considered a pediatric endocrinology condition, but we present two cases of young adults who presented with hypertension. An 18-year-old woman was found to have hypertension and hypokalemia when she presented for gonadectomy for 46, XY gonadal dysgenesis. She was subsequently found to have low cortisol, elevated progesterone, and elevated aldosterone. Genetic testing confirmed 17-alpha hydroxylase deficiency (17OHD). Her case was unique in that 17OHD usually presents with hypoaldosteronism. We also present the case of a 15-year-old man (46, XX) wit…

Extrahepatic bile duct obstruction can be caused by various pathologies, most of them being malignant. Painless, progressive jaundice is the usual mode of presentation. We report a case of distal Common Bile Duct (CBD) obstruction due to a Benign Intramural Beale gland hyperplasia mimicking a periampullary carcinoma. Peribiliary glands (Beale Glands) are a group of seromucinous glands, normally seen within the fibromuscular wall and periductal connective tissue in the extrahepatic and large intrahepatic ducts and also in the neck of the Gall bladder. These glands drain into the bile duct lumen…

BACKGROUND: Hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH), also known as hemimandibular hypertrophy, is characterised by excessive unilateral three-dimensional growth of the mandible after birth. Vertical unilateral elongation of the mandible becomes clinically evident as a rare form of vertical facial asymmetry. Aberrant growth of the facial skeleton affects the developing dentition and the dental compensatory mechanism is usually unable to maintain optimal occlusal relationships. The resulting malocclusion is effectively managed by combined surgical-orthodontic care to address the facial, skeletal and den…

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) refers to a group of inherited genetic disorders involving deficiencies in enzymes that convert cholesterol to cortisol within the adrenal cortex. There are five key enzymes involved in the production of cortisol. Of these key enzymes, deficiency of 21-hydroxylase is the most commonly defective enzyme leading to CAH representing more than 90% of cases. The low adrenal cortisol levels associated with CAH affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal negative feedback system leading to increased pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) production, which over…

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between coronoid process hyperplasia and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis and to analyze the pathological mechanism and clinical significance of coronoid process hyperplasia. Forty-four patients treated for TMJ ankylosis between January 2007 and December 2014 were studied retrospectively; 176 patients with normal TMJs served as controls. The original DICOM data were used to reconstruct the jaw, and a three-dimensional cephalometric analysis (SimPlant Pro software version 11.04) was performed to assess the association between t…
