A mobile computer aided system for optic nerve head detection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The detection of optic nerve head (ONH) in retinal fundus images plays a key role in identifying Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) as well as other abnormal conditions in eye examinations. This paper presents a method and its associated software towards the development of an Android smartphone app based on a previously developed ONH detection algorithm. The development of this app and the use of the d-Eye lens which can be snapped onto a smartphone provide a mobile and cost-effective computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system in ophthalmology. In particular, this CAD system would

A stacking based deep learning framework integrating random search neural architecture search for meniscus tear diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and rapid diagnosis of meniscal tears is crucial for effective management of sports-related injuries and degenerative knee disorders. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used for meniscus evaluation; however, manual interpretation is time-consuming and subject to inter-observer variability. Automated and reliable classification systems may therefore support clinical decision-making. PURPOSE: This study aims to develop a robust and interpretable deep learning framework for the automatic four-class classification of meniscal conditions using MRI images. METHODS: A t

Text-Driven Tumor Synthesis.

Tumor synthesis can generate challenging cases that AI often misses or over-detects. Training on these cases improves AI performance. However, most existing synthesis methods are either unconditional- generating images from random variables-or conditioned only on tumor shape. As a result, they lack control over clinically important tumor characteristics, such as texture, heterogeneity, boundary, and pathology. The generated tumors are therefore overly similar or duplicates of existing training cases, failing to effectively address AI's weaknesses. We propose a new text-driven tumor synthesis a

Vision Sensing-Driven Intelligent Ocular Disease Detection Using Conformer-Based Dual Fusion.

The deep vision sensing has been a practical tool in early disease detection, and this work aims at an important branch of ocular disease recognition. Although a number of researchers had paid attention to it during past years, fine-grained ocular feature extraction always remains a challenge. To handle with this issue, this work benefits from comprehensive ability of the convolution-Transformer structure (Conformer), and proposes vision sensing-driven intelligent ocular disease detection using conformer-based dual fusion. On the one hand, the proposal combines technical advantages of convolut

A unified multi-task framework enables interpretable chest radiograph analysis.

BACKGROUND: While multimodal deep learning has advanced medical imaging analysis, existing black-box systems may remain confined to isolated tasks, often overlooking the trust-sensitive nature of clinical diagnosis as a multi-task process. METHODS: We propose IMT-CXR (interpretable multi-task transformer for chest X-ray analysis), a framework that emulates radiologists' diagnostic workflow through three evidence-driven stages: (1) disease recognition, (2) attribute characterization (e.g., size, location, and severity quantification), and (3) evidence-integrated report generation with traceabl

Symmetric Siamese Networks for Longitudinal Chest Radiograph Change Detection: A Leakage-Controlled Study on MIMIC-CXR.

Background/Objectives: Radiologists usually read a chest radiograph by comparing it with an earlier one, yet most deep learning models are trained and tested on single images. This study measures how much a longitudinal pair of radiographs improves finding-specific change detection on MIMIC-CXR and tests whether the gain can be explained by encoder pretraining. Methods: One frontal pair per patient was built from the earliest and latest studies within 180 days (14,043 pairs), and paired CheXpert labels defined four transition classes: absent-to-absent, onset, resolved, and persistent. Enhancing automated fracture detection in paediatric wrist X-rays with paired and unpaired cast suppression methods.

PURPOSE: Casts in follow-up wrist X-rays reduce diagnostic image quality, complicating the assessment of fracture healing. This study developed cast suppression models using real unpaired data and synthetic paired data and investigated their impact on automated fracture detection performance in paediatric wrist X-rays. METHODS: A cast suppression model was developed using data generated with unpaired image-to-image translation methods. A published CycleGAN model was repurposed to generate a synthetic paired dataset from an institutional collection of 31,001 X-rays. This dataset was used to tr

Thyro-LMD: A Benchmark Dataset and Sample-Driven Data Loading, Attention, and Regularization for Long-Tailed Multi-Label Thyroid Ultrasound Diagnosis.

Developing robust and effective computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) methods for thyroid ultrasound (TUS) remains a key challenge in medical imaging. Prior work has largely focused on binary or multi-class lesion classification, whereas real-world diagnosis follows standardized guidelines based on combinations of lexicon-level descriptors. These combinations naturally exhibit long-tailed distributions due to epidemiological patterns, limiting the robustness and generalizability of existing methods. Motivated by this, we introduce Thyro-LMD, the first long-tailed multi-label dataset for TUS. Using h

Development, image interpretation, clinical experience, and applications of optical coherence tomography in neurointerventional surgery.

Angiography remains the standard imaging modality for evaluating vascular disease and guiding endovascular interventions; however, its limited spatial resolution restricts visualization of vessel wall pathology and therapeutic devices. Over the past decade, intravascular optical coherence tomography (OCT) has emerged as a transformative tool in coronary artery disease. OCT provides three-dimensional, high-resolution imaging of coronary arteries, enabling assessment of vessel wall microstructure, plaque composition, lumen geometry, and stent deployment. This level of detail has advanced the und

MSF-Swin-ICFNet: An Image-Derived Multi-Scale Swin Transformer Framework with Cross-Scale Feature Fusion for Breast Lesion Classification and Segmentation in Mammograms.

Background: Accurate breast lesion classification and localization from mammograms remain challenging because lesions vary in size, morphology, density, contrast, and boundary clarity. This study proposes MSF-Swin-ICFNet, an image-derived Multi-Scale Swin Transformer framework with Image-Derived Cross-Scale Fusion (ICF) for joint benign-malignant classification and lightweight lesion localization. Methods: The proposed framework extracts hierarchical representations from four Swin Transformer stages and aligns, adaptively recalibrates, and fuses these multi-scale features into a shared represe

Advancing Visual Perception Through VCANet-Crossover Osprey Algorithm: Integrating Visual Technologies.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a significant vision-threatening condition, necessitating accurate and efficient automated screening methods. Traditional deep learning (DL) models struggle to detect subtle lesions and also suffer from high computational complexity. Existing models primarily mimic the primary visual cortex (V1) of the human visual system, neglecting other higher-order processing regions. To overcome these limitations, this research introduces the vision core-adapted network-based crossover osprey algorithm (VCANet-COP) for subtle lesion recognition with better computational effici

Dual-Scale Swin Transformer via Feature Alignment and Adversarial Discrimination for Retinopathy of Prematurity Diagnosis.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinal vascular disease that primarily affects premature infants with low birth weight. It is a leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide, but it can often be effectively managed with appropriate and timely diagnosis and treatment. To address the impact of image style on model classification performance, this paper proposes a dual-scale Swin Transformer (DS-Swin-T) network for ROP. The network comprises three components: image synthesis (IS), feature alignment, and advanced adversarial learning. The IS module generates synthesis style images as an in

Unveiling key pathomic features for automated diagnosis and Gleason grade estimation in prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in histology scanning technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer great opportunities to support cancer diagnosis. The inability to interpret the extracted features and model predictions is one of the major issues limiting the acceptance of AI models in clinical practice, and a clear representation of the relevance of the extracted features and model predictions is lacking. Focusing on the problem of prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis and grading, this study aims to detect which are the most discriminant features for distinguishing malignant from non-malignant ti

TIER-LOC: Visual Query-based Video Clip Localization in fetal ultrasound videos with a multi-tier transformer.

In this paper, we introduce the Visual Query-based task of Video Clip Localization (VQ-VCL) for medical video understanding. Specifically, we aim to retrieve a video clip containing frames similar to a given exemplar frame from a given input video. To solve the task, we propose a novel visual query-based video clip localization model called TIER-LOC. TIER-LOC is designed to improve video clip retrieval, especially in fine-grained videos by extracting features from different levels, i.e., coarse to fine-grained, referred to as TIERS. The aim is to utilize multi-Tier features for detecting subtl

Polyp segmentation in colonoscopy images using DeepLabV3+.

Segmenting polyps in colonoscopy images is essential for the early identification and diagnosis of colorectal cancer, a significant cause of worldwide cancer deaths. Prior deep learning based models such as Attention based variation, UNet variations and Transformer-derived networks have had notable success in capturing intricate features and complex polyp shapes. However they frequently encounter challenges in pinpointing small details and enhancing the representation of features on both local and global scale. In this study, we have introduced the DeepLabv3++ model which is an enhanced versio

Improving CXR Bone Suppression by Exploiting Domain-Level and Instance-Level Information.

For chest X-ray image (CXR) analysis, effective bone structure suppression is essential for uncovering lung abnormalities and facilitating accurate clinical diagnoses. While recent deep generative models, to some extent, improve the reconstruction quality of bone-suppressed CXRs, they often fall short in delivering substantial improvements in downstream diagnosis tasks. This limitation is attributed to a narrow focus on instance-specific details, neglecting broader domain-level knowledge, which hampers bone-suppression effectiveness. In response to these challenges, our proposed framework adop

Large language models for dermatological image interpretation - a comparative study.

OBJECTIVES: Interpreting skin findings can be challenging for both laypersons and clinicians. Large language models (LLMs) offer accessible decision support, yet their diagnostic capabilities for dermatological images remain underexplored. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of LLMs based on image interpretation of common dermatological diseases. METHODS: A total of 500 dermatological images, encompassing four prevalent skin conditions (psoriasis, vitiligo, erysipelas and rosacea), were used to compare seven multimodal LLMs (GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gemini 1.5 Flash, C
