Examining the Relationship Between Mass Incarceration, Gender Norms, and HIV Vulnerability for Formerly Incarcerated Black Men who Have Sex with Men and Women.

Despite recognition of the penal system's impact on HIV vulnerability and known HIV disparities among Black Americans, particularly Black gay and bisexual men, limited research has examined the relationship between incarceration and HIV risk for formerly incarcerated Black men who have sex with men and women (BMSMW). This study aims to fill that gap by exploring the role of masculinity-specifically how both hegemonic and prosocial masculinity may influence sexual risk behaviors. Using data from the Public Health Management Corporation of Philadelphia, we assessed differences in masculinity by …

Rebuilding Lives: The Intersection of Reintegration and Psychological Distress after Incarceration for Genocide.

This article explores the reentry and reintegration of Rwandans who were incarcerated for genocide. Previous research indicates that these individuals are experiencing psychological distress, and we analyze the determinants of this distress in this study. Specifically, we assess three waves of longitudinal data following 185 Rwandans whom we interviewed before their release and approximately four months and one year afterward. We find that psychosocial distress generally improved after completing one's sentence. Such improvement can be explained through securing a livelihood, (re)establishing

The incidence and risk factors for incarceration for violence after traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence to suggest that Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is implicated in increased incarceration for violence. TBI is commonly experienced by vulnerable populations who are at greater risk of violent offending due to health and social comorbidities. However, the impact of comorbid risk on outcomes of incarceration for violence is underexplored. Through retrospective data linkage, the current study aimed to identify the rate of incarceration for violence post-TBI and explore the impact of key risk factors in a cohort of 5899 survivors of TBI identified through hosp…

A Cohort Study of Emergency Department Trauma Evaluation and Outcomes by Incarceration Status.

People experiencing incarceration (PEI) have high rates of trauma and emergency department (ED) utilization, yet limited data describe their ED evaluation and outcomes. We sought to compare trauma patient characteristics, ED care, and disposition by incarceration status. We hypothesized PEI would have shorter ED lengths-of-stay (LOSs), undergo more cross-sectional imaging, and have lower rates of admission. We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of adult incarcerated and nonincarcerated trauma patients presenting to a Level 1 trauma center from 1/2010 to 12/2020. The primary o…

Incarceration and electrophysiology care: A review of clinical, ethical, and systems-level challenges.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated individuals bear a disproportionate burden of cardiovascular disease and face significant barriers to specialty care, including in cardiac electrophysiology (EP). The impact of incarceration on EP care remains underrecognized and incompletely characterized. OBJECTIVE: To characterize how incarceration disrupts the delivery of cardiac EP care, identify clinical and system-level barriers, and propose opportunities to improve access and quality. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of the literature on incarceration, cardiovascular disease, and EP care. RESULTS: Hi…

Incarceration History, Dental Care Utilization, and Oral Health Difficulties Among U.S. Military Veterans.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether a history of incarceration is associated with self-reported dental care utilization and oral health difficulties among low-income U.S. military veterans. METHODS: Data were from Wave 5 of the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences study (N = 1384). Weighted logistic and multinomial logistic regression models were estimated to examine the association between a history of incarceration and (a) dental care utilization, and (b) oral health difficulties, adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, military, and health insurance characteristics. RESULT…

Intersecting Pathways: The Complex Understanding of Roma Women Post-Incarceration Trajectories Through Intersectionality.

This paper examines the post-release trajectories of Roma women through the lens of intersectionality, focusing on the compounded impacts of gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, trauma, and health issues. The study highlights the unique challenges faced by Roma women upon their release from prison, emphasizing how these intersecting factors exacerbate their reintegration difficulties. Utilizing an ethnographic approach, the research captures the lived experiences of 15 Roma women in Romania, revealing critical insights into their struggles with motherhood, poverty, health care, stigma, an

Medical associations' guidance on caring for patients experiencing incarceration in the United States.

The United States has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. Carceral status can complicate clinical encounters in community and academic settings for an already medically vulnerable population. While it is likely physicians will encounter patients experiencing incarceration in their practice, there are few educational opportunities dedicated to ensuring delivery of healthcare that protects patient dignity, autonomy, and privacy. Professional medical associations can play a role in filling this physician knowledge gap. The goal of this analysis is to catalogue and analyze the cur…

Cervical Cancer and a History of Incarceration: Examining a Social Determinant of Health.

Females who are incarcerated are disproportionately burdened by cancer, particularly cervical cancer. We measured the odds of cervical cancer compared with nonscreenable cancers for females who were incarcerated before diagnosis. By comparing a cancer for which screening and vaccination are available with cancers for which neither are available, we aimed to assess the relationship of incarceration with diseases for which preventive care mitigates risk. We created a novel data set combining cancer data from a large cancer center with incarceration data from the state department of corrections. …

Excess tuberculosis risk during and following incarceration in Paraguay: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The increased risk of tuberculosis (TB) among people deprived of liberty (PDL) is due to individual and institution-level factors. We followed a cohort of PDL from 5 prisons in Paraguay to describe the risk of TB during incarceration and after they were released. METHODS: We linked a 2013 national census of prisons with TB records from the TB Program from 2010 to 2021 to identify TB notifications among incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals. We used multivariable Cox regression models to quantify the risk of TB during and following incarceration and to identify risk fa…

Personal Health Libraries for People Returning From Incarceration: Protocol for a Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals released from carceral facilities have high rates of hospitalization and death, especially in the weeks immediately after their return to community settings. During this transitional process, individuals leaving incarceration are expected to engage with multiple providers working in separate, complex systems, including health care clinics, social service agencies, community-based organizations, and probation and parole services. This navigation is often complicated by individuals' physical and mental health, literacy and fluency, and socioeconomic status. Personal healt…
