No Correlation of Morpho-Agronomic Traits of Phaseolus vulgaris (Fabaceae) Genotypes and Resistance to Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) and Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Resistance of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) varieties is an important tool to control Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) and Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) worldwide. However, bioassays to characterize the resistance of a genotype can be difficult to perform. Therefore, the current study sought to correlate the morpho-agronomic traits of P. vulgaris genotypes with their resistance to A. obtectus and Z. subfasciatus to facilitate genotype characterization. Bean samples of each genotype were infested with newly emerged insect couples, and the number of adul

Optimized conditions for the long-term growth of primary cell cultures derived from the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula.

The southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula L., is a highly polyphagous global pest that causes substantial economic losses on a broad range of crops. Current management strategies rely heavily on chemical insecticides, which can promote resistance development and negatively affect non-target beneficial organisms. The lack of a tractable in vitro cell culture system has limited the development of more targeted and sustainable control approaches for this species. In this study, we identified the optimal egg age for culture initiation and evaluated seven insect cell culture media or medium com

Synergistic and additive interactions of Shewanella sp., Pseudomonas sp. and Thauera sp. with chlorantraniliprole and emamectin benzoate for controlling Spodoptera litura (Fabricius).

The imprudent use of insecticides causes the development of resistance in insect pest populations, contamination of the environment, biological imbalance and human intoxication. The use of microbial pathogens combined with insecticides has been proposed as an alternative strategy for insect pest management. This IPM approach may offer effective ways to control pests, in addition to lowering the risk of chemical residues in the environment. Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) is a major pest of many crops like cotton, maize, tobacco, cauliflower, cabbage, and fodder crops globally. Here, we evaluated

Point-of-care ultrasound utilized for foreign body in a toe: A case report of botfly larvae.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is infection with fly larvae commonly occurring in tropical and subtropical areas. Whereas the presentation of skin infection with organisms such as Dermatobia hominis (human botfly) is more easily recognized in these regions, identification of myiasis in the United States is difficult due to its rarity. Due to unspecific signs and symptoms, myiasis may initially be mistaken for other conditions, like cellulitis. CASE REPORT: This case details a patient with pain, swelling, drainage, and erythema of the right s

[Morphologic observation and 3D reconstruction of aortic endothelial cells in diabetic rats with the use of atomic force microscope].

This experiment was designed to observe the morphologic changes of aortic endothelial cells in diabetic rats and to investigate the influence of hyperglycemia. Diabetic rats were used and their aortic endothelial cells were observed under atomic force microscope, then these pictures were 3D reconstructed. The results showed that numerous microvilli and round window-hollow-like structures and insect- bitten-like caveloae were scattered on the surface of the vascular endothelia, and a few ball-like granules were adhering to the endothelial cells. In diabetic rats, microvilli decreased and the ce

Options for vector control against trypanosomiasis in Africa.

Tsetse control has long been an important option for reducing the impact of African trypanosomiasis but, although many effective methods have been used, the results have seldom proved sustainable. Developments to reduce cost and environmental impact increasingly limit the choices available for control and the scale of operations has declined. Conversely, human trypanosomiasis has reached epidemic proportions in some countries. Here, Reg Allsopp argues that those tasked with managing trypanosomiasis or committed to poverty alleviation in Africa should consider large-scale, area-wide tsetse cont

Alphitobiusdiaperinus control and physicochemical study of poultry litters treated with quicklime and shallow fermentation.

Poultry litter reuse in Brazil is a common practice to reduce broiler production costs. Quicklime and shallow fermentation treatments are methods used to reduce microbial contamination and infestation of insects such as Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer). The aim of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical parameters of reused poultry litter to better characterize the effects of quicklime and shallow fermentation on Salmonella and A. diaperinus control. Ammonia and humidity concentrations significantly increased on the litter treated with shallow fermentation and pH when treated with virgin

Efficacy and community-effectiveness of insecticide treated nets for the control of visceral leishmaniasis: A systematic review.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been targeted for elimination from Southeast Asia (SEA). The disease has been endemic in SEA, and in other parts of the world involving both humans and animals. One of the key strategies for combating VL is controlling for the vector sandfly. There are a few vector control strategies that are currently in practice. We sought to assess the efficacy and community effectiveness of insecticide treated nets (ITNs) in controlling the burden of sandfly and the occurrence of VL among humans. We conducted a systematic review following a study protocol and the Preferred R

Tying pest insects in knots: the deployment of spider-venom-derived knottins as bioinsecticides.

Spider venoms are complex chemical arsenals that contain a rich variety of insecticidal toxins. However, the major toxin class in many spider venoms is disulfide-rich peptides known as knottins. The knotted three-dimensional fold of these mini-proteins provides them with exceptional chemical and thermal stability as well as resistance to proteases. In contrast with other bioinsecticides, which are often slow-acting, spider knottins are fast-acting neurotoxins. In addition to being potently insecticidal, some knottins have exceptional taxonomic selectivity, being lethal to key agricultural pest

Biology, Ecology, and Evolving Management of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Sweet Corn in the United States.

The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is a polyphagous pest found throughout the United States, where it attacks many field and vegetable crops. Although H. zea has long been a traditional pest of sweet corn, its importance to this crop has increased dramatically over the past two decades. In this review, we summarize information critical for current and future management of H. zea in sweet corn production in the United States. First, we discuss the pest status of H. zea and its life history, including migration, infestation and larval development, diapause, overwintering, and abiotic fa

The susceptibility of different species of sciarid flies to entomopathogenic nematodes.

Steinernema feltiae is the most effective nematode for controlling sciarid species but S. carpocapsae does exert some control. S. feltiae is less effective at 30 degrees C than at 22 degrees C. S. anomali, S. riobravis and two Heterorhabditis spp. gave better control at the higher temperature. All six sciarid species tested were susceptible to S. feltiae but there was some variation in the level of infection. UK isolates of S. feltiae were more effective against UK sciarids than the nematode isolates from other European countries which were tested. Adult sciarids are infected by S. feltiae and

Decoding channel pore dynamics mechanism in Anopheles gambiae Orco homotetramer.

MOTIVATION: Insect odorant receptors (iORs) essential for olfaction function as 7-transmembrane-domain (7TM) ion channels. iORs form tetrameric complexes that include a highly conserved odorant receptor co-receptor (Orco). Functional Orco homotetramers have also known to form ex vivo. Blocking Orco ex vivo and in vivo disrupts olfactory signalling, making it a promising target for functional intervention. Understanding its gating behaviour is critical for developing strategies to disrupt odour-guided behaviours in disease-vector insects. Thus, insights into the dynamic gating of the Anopheles

Unveiling the molecular architecture of TcJHAMT: structural basis for catalytic efficiency and targeted inhibitor screening in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum.

BACKGROUND: The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, is a holometabolous insect regulated by juvenile hormone (JH), and juvenile hormone acid methyltransferase (JHAMT) serves as a rate-limiting enzyme involved in JH biosynthesis. JHAMT thus represents a promising molecular target for pest control, although the structural properties of canonical JHAMT remain uncharacterized. RESULTS: Herein, we present the canonical JHAMT of T. castaneum, TcJHAMT3, and report its three-dimensional structure at 2.50 Å resolution. TcJHAMT3 exhibits a conserved structural pattern with insect JHAMT homologs, con

Silencing of a chemosensory membrane protein gene, the odorant receptor co-receptor (Orco), induces a significant disruption in olfactory-driven behaviors of the pumpkin fruit fly, Bactrocera tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Bactrocera tau is an economically important invasive pest damaging many vegetables and fruits. Due to the hidden characteristics of its larval infestation, a strategy for regulating B. tau adults' olfactory-driven behaviors to control the pest is desirable. The olfactory co-receptor (Orco) is a key chemosensory membrane protein in insect olfactory systems. However, the function of Orco in the olfactory-driven behaviors of this pest remains under explored. In this study, we characterized the Orco gene from B. tau, named BtauOrco. The complete open reading frame (ORF) of BtauOrco is 1422 bp, whi

Bollworm responses to release of genetically modified Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedroviruses in cotton.

Helicoverpa armigera single nucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (HaSNPV) has been developed as a commercial biopesticide to control the cotton bollworm, H. armigera, in China. The major limitation to a broader application of this virus has been the relative long time to incapacitate the target insect. Two HaSNPV recombinants with improved insecticidal properties were released in bollworm-infested cotton. One recombinant (HaCXW1) lacked the ecdysteroid UDP-glucosyltransferase (egt) gene and in another recombinant (HaCXW2), an insect-selective scorpion toxin (AaIT) gene replaced the egt gene. In a

Enhanced growth and virulence of Metarhizium species using insect-derived in vitro culture medium.

The environment in which a fungus grows directly influences fungal traits such as development, transmission, and pathogenic potential. The environmental niche encompasses factors such as nutrient availability, biotic and abiotic stressors, as well as host-derived chemical cues. In fungal pathogens, where conidia act as the infectious agents, the environmental niche impacts the quantity and quality of the produced conidia, thereby affecting the ability of conidia to infect and kill hosts. In the present study, we investigated the effect of host-derived medium types on various phenotypes, includ

Mechanistic insights into midgut injury in Bombyx mori induced by low concentration exposure to Bacillus thuringiensis.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is widely used for the control of agricultural insect pests; however, trace residues of Bt may induce sublethal effects in insects. In this study, Bombyx mori was used as a model insect to investigate the mechanisms underlying midgut injury and tissue apoptosis induced by continuous exposure to a low concentration of Bt. The results showed that prolonged exposure to a low concentration of Bt progressively worsened structural damage to midgut epithelial cells, accompanied by chromatin condensation. Moreover, the apoptotic rate of midgut cells was significantly higher
