Close relational partners play a critical role in shaping each other's emotions during social interactions, a process known as interpersonal emotion regulation. We examined how different forms of dementia (i.e., Alzheimer's disease, behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia) affect interpersonal emotion regulation. We assessed how caregivers perceived their partners' prosocial regulatory efforts and tracked real-time changes in caregivers' affect during a dyadic interaction. We also investigated how these processes relate to caregivers' mental health. Informal car

BACKGROUND: Animal cruelty is a recognized correlate of interpersonal violence within family systems, yet children's exposure to this form of harm remains absent from most standardized assessments of childhood adversity. Guided by the Dimensional Model of Adversity and Psychopathology, this study examined the co-occurrence of exposure to animal cruelty with other threat-related adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and how these patterns relate to adult mental health.
METHODS: Our sample included 1,072 U.S. adults recruited online through Prolific, a licensed participant recruitment firm, usin

OBJECTIVE: Interpersonal difficulties are evidenced in Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and are thought to contribute to disease onset and maintenance, however, research in the framework of emotional competence is currently limited. Previous studies have often only used static images for emotion recognition tasks, and evidence is lacking on the relationships between performance-based emotional abilities and self-reported intra- and interpersonal emotional traits. This study aimed to test multimodal dynamic emotion recognition ability in AN and analyze its correlation with the psychometric scores of self-

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent military dependents may be at higher risk for psychosocial stressors and disordered eating compared with civilian youths, but the mechanisms underlying these risks are unclear. Interpersonal theory proposes that difficult relationships lead to negative affect, thereby promoting emotional eating, which has been linked to and predictive of disordered eating. The interpersonal model may have particular relevance for understanding disordered eating among adolescent military dependents, given the unique stressors related to their parents' careers. This study aimed to examine t

The primary proposed change process in emotion-focused therapy models for couples involves partners accessing and revealing vulnerable emotions and responding to such disclosures with empathy and compassion. Therapists often use enactments (guiding partners to communicate with each other directly) to facilitate this process. However, many therapists report lacking confidence and clarity in how best to facilitate enactments, and it remains understudied which therapist interventions within enactment episodes contribute to vulnerability sharing and responsiveness expression. This preregistered st

A central requirement of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) consists of difficulties with interpersonal relationships. As emerging adults' transition into adulthood and seek more autonomy from parents, it is important to examine how ODD problems and parent-child discord are indirectly associated through interpersonal competencies. The current study examined the indirect effects between ODD problems in emerging adults and parent-child discord through multiple interpersonal competencies as well as the additional differences among parent-child gender dyads. Emerging adults (N = 599 individuals a…

The prescription drug epidemic in the United States has gained attention in recent years. Vicodin, along with its generic version, is the country's mostly widely prescribed pain reliever, and it contains a narcotic component that can lead to physical and chemical dependency. The majority of Vicodin abusers were first introduced via prescription, unlike other drugs which are often experienced for the first time due to experimentation. Most abusers report obtaining their supply from a prescription, either their own or someone else's. Although the problem with prescription drug abuse is well know

The therapeutic alliance has historically emerged as a pantheoretical correlate of favorable psychotherapy outcomes. However, uncertainty remains about the direction of the alliance-outcome link, and whether it is affected by other contextual variables. The present study explored (a) if early alliance quality predicted subsequent symptom change while controlling for the effect of prior symptom change in interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for depression, and (b) whether baseline patient characteristics moderated the alliance-outcome relation (to help specify conditions under which alliance predi

BACKGROUND: This paper reports the results of a systematic survey of members of a clinical gastroenterology service to determine their perceptions of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who were deemed to function poorly and were difficult to manage clinically.
OBJECTIVES: To assess objectively the defining characteristics of this perceived subgroup of patients who are encountered in virtually all gastroenterology services.
METHODS: A sample of gastroenterologists and gastrointestinal surgeons (n=10), as well as gastrointestinal nurses (n=19), was surveyed regarding their beliefs

Suicidal ideation and behavior (SIB) are common in persistent depressive disorder (PDD) and may be related to interpersonal dysfunction. While SIB has been extensively analyzed in other high-risk disorders (e.g., borderline personality disorder, BPD), data on interpersonal risk factors and effects of specific psychotherapy on SIB in PDD are limited. This study aimed at investigating loneliness versus social network size as interpersonal risk factors for SIB in PDD and assess effects of cognitive behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP) on this domain. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and depression frequently co-occur among emerging adulthood, yet how they co-develop over time in response to interpersonal stress and which social factors shape this process remain unclear. Understanding these joint trajectories and their interpersonal predictors is critical for early identification and effective intervention. This longitudinal study examined how NSSI and depression co-develop in Chinese college students and tested four interpersonal predictors (parent-child, peer, teacher-student, and dormitory relationships) via latent class growth analysis (

Objective: We tested an aptitude by treatment interaction; namely, whether patients' baseline interpersonal problems moderated the comparative efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) vs. interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for bulimia nervosa (BN). Method: Data derived from a randomized-controlled trial. Patients reported on their interpersonal problems at baseline; purge frequency at baseline, midtreatment, and posttreatment; and global eating disorder severity at baseline and posttreatment. We estimated the rate of change in purge frequency across therapy, and the likelihood of attainin

Child maltreatment can have a lasting impact, which is why it is important to understand factors that may exacerbate or mitigate self-esteem difficulties in adulthood. Although there is tremendous benefit that can come from religion and spirituality, few studies examine religious views after child maltreatment. Subsequent interpersonal difficulties may also affect self-esteem in maltreatment survivors. This study sought to examine interpersonal problems and religiosity as mediators in the link between childhood maltreatment and self-esteem in adulthood. The study recruited 718 women (M = 19.53

OBJECTIVE: Women who have experienced childhood abuse often have interpersonal difficulties. The current study examines whether changes in emotion dysregulation mediate the relationship between changes in attachment patterns and changes in interpersonal problems among women who completed treatment for the sequelae of childhood abuse.
METHOD: Participants were 36 women who completed a program targeting the psychological consequences of childhood maltreatment. At pre-and posttreatment, participants completed a projective assessment of adult attachment, and self-report measures of emotion dysreg

Although social anxiety disorder is defined by anxiety-related symptoms, little research has focused on the interpersonal features of social anxiety. Prior studies (Cain, Pincus, & Grosse Holtforth, 2010; Kachin, Newman, & Pincus, 2001) identified distinct subgroups of socially anxious individuals' interpersonal circumplex problems that were blends of agency and communion, and yet inconsistencies remain. We predicted 2 distinct interpersonal subtypes would exist for individuals with high social anxiety, and that these social anxiety subtypes would differ on empathetic concern, paranoia, receiv

AIM: Atypical antipsychotic treatment (e.g. risperidone) has been found to improve social functioning more than standard antipsychotic treatment. However, it is unclear which specific social behaviors are implicated in this improvement. The current study employed an interactive puzzle game to examine how social behaviors contribute to the improvement of social functioning by comparing patients receiving risperidone with those receiving trifluoperazine.
METHODS: Scores on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, executive functioning, and social functioning were obtained from 24 patients with

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's is a progressive disorder of the brain that gradually affects memory, personality, behaviour, identity, and interpersonal relationships, particularly among older adults. Alice Munro's novella "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" offers a compelling literary framework for exploring these impacts through narrative gerontology, a lens that emphasizes storytelling's role in shaping identity and relational bonds during ageing and illness.
METHOD: This study applies narrative gerontology to analyze Munro's depiction of Alzheimer's, focusing on the experiences of Fiona and Grant…

In the present study, we investigated the unique role of teachers' and students' personality traits as well as the personality (dis)similarity between personality traits of both partners in the affective quality of dyadic student-teacher relationships (i.e., closeness and conflict). To explore these associations, we used a Chinese sample of 4638 upper elementary students and their 104 class teachers who reported about their own personality traits and the quality of their mutual relationship. Using multilevel polynomial regression modeling with response surface analysis, we found that both stud
