Pyogenic granuloma of the sigmoid colon.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a polypoid form of lobular capillary hemangioma that usually occurs in the skin and some mucosal surfaces. However, it is extremely rare in the intestinal tract and its preoperative diagnosis is difficult. We report on a case of PG of the sigmoid colon in a 62-year-old woman with a 6-month history of rectal bleeding. A pedunculated polypoid lesion was detected by colonoscopy and a polypectomy was performed. A microscopical study revealed a lobular arrangement proliferation of varying sizes of capillaries within an edematous stroma. A critical review of the English li

Giant colonic lipoma with prolapse through the rectum treated by external local excision: A case report.

Colonic lipomas are a rare type of gastrointestinal benign tumor. Those that are <2 cm are generally asymptomatic and do not require any treatment. However, those that are >2 cm may be symptomatic, resulting in abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, intestinal obstruction and rectal bleeding. A 39-year-old male patient presented with a mass prolapse through the anal canal, which was causing anal pain and rectal bleeding. The patient was admitted to hospital via the emergency services and directed to the Department of General Surgery with the preliminary diagnosis of a rectal prolapse. A pedu

Clinical presentations and surgical approach of acute intussusception caused by Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is a rare autosomal dominantly inherited disease characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentations and gastrointestinal polyps. The polyps are located predominantly in the small intestine and usually cause intussusceptions. Adult intussusception caused by Peutz-Jeghers syndrome occurs very rarely. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics, preoperative diagnosis, and surgical management of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome associated with acute intussusception in adult patients. DISCUSSION: Consecutive patients with the postoperative diagnosis …

[Lipomatosis pelvis].

The article is a discussion of three cases of lipomatosis in the pelvis and of the surgical treatment undertaken in each case. In the first two cases, fatty tissue compressed the lower uriunary tract, and in the third, the rectosigmoid intestine. In the third case, the patient was also diagnosed as having a malignant rectum polyp. In all three cases, the diagnosis by ultrasound, intravenous urography and rectoscopy was confirmed by CT. All three patients underwent surgery. The first patient was erroneously surgicaly treated in another clinic. The operation involved resection of the terminal pa

Benign Tumors and Tumor-Like Conditions of Ampulla and Small Intestine: The PathologyOutlines.com Review.

Small intestine and ampulla can be involved in a heterogeneous group of benign tumors and tumor-like diseases, potentially mimicking malignant neoplasms. In-depth knowledge of them is critical for practicing pathologists since they represent potential pitfalls in routine diagnostic activity. Such conditions include the following: (1) Brunner gland lesions, including Brunner gland hyperplasia and hamartoma; (2) polyps, such as adenoma, hyperplastic, hamartomatous, and inflammatory; (3) mesenchymal proliferations encompassing inflammatory fibroid polyp, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, leiomy

Microcystic/reticular schwannoma of the proximal sigmoid colon: case report with review of literature.

We report a case of microcystic/reticular schwannoma of the proximal sigmoid colon in a 61-year-old man. A 12-mm polyp was detected while the patient was undergoing screening for colorectal neoplasm. This rare variant of schwannoma was initially described in 2008 and shows a predilection for the visceral organs, predominantly the gastrointestinal tract. We also review 11 other reported cases of microcystic/reticular schwannomas in the gastrointestinal tract. Unlike conventional gastrointestinal schwannomas, which are more common in the stomach, this variant appears to be more common in the lar

Gastric non-secreting neuroendocrine tumor and hypochlorhydria-related hypergastrinemia: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is characterized by recurrent peptic ulcers and diarrhea that result from gastrin-secreting neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract; nevertheless, severe hypergastrinemia may also have alternative pathogenetic explanations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old woman of Caucasian origin presented with a history of epigastric pain and early satiety, severe hypergastrinemia (approximately 2000 pg/mL) and a neuroendocrine polyp in the corpus of her stomach. Chronic atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia was present, but she denied use of acid

Extending the phenotypes associated with DICER1 mutations.

DICER1 is crucial for embryogenesis and early development. Forty different heterozygous germline DICER1 mutations have been reported worldwide in 42 probands that developed as children or young adults, pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB), cystic nephroma (CN), ovarian sex cord-stromal tumors (especially Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor [SLCT]), and/or multinodular goiter (MNG). We report DICER1 mutations in seven additional families that manifested uterine cervix embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (cERMS, four cases) and primitive neuroectodermal tumor (cPNET, one case), Wilms tumor (WT, three cases), pulmonary s

Precancerous conditions and epithelial dysplasia in the stomach.

A distinction can be made between a precancerous condition and a precancerous lesion. The former is a clinical state associated with a significantly increased risk of cancer, whereas a precancerous lesion is a histopathological abnormality in which cancer is more likely to occur than in its apparently normal counterpart. Up to the present time atrophic gastritis, gastric ulcer, pernicious anaemia, gastric stumps, gastric polyps, and Ménétrier's disease have all been considered as precancerous conditions and lesions of the stomach. Of these, only atrophic gastritis, pernicious anaemia, gastric

Waugh's Syndrome in Adulthood: A Case Report of a Rare Combination of Intestinal Malrotation and Ileocolic Intussusception.

Intestinal malrotation is an uncommon congenital anomaly resulting from abnormal rotation and fixation of the midgut during embryologic development. Although typically diagnosed during infancy, presentation in adulthood is rare and frequently associated with nonspecific symptoms. Adult intussusception is also an unusual condition and is commonly related to an underlying pathological lead point. The coexistence of intestinal malrotation and intussusception, known as Waugh's syndrome, is exceptionally rare in adults. We report the case of a 76-year-old male presenting with intermittent abdominal

Colorectal cancer screening using a multi-locus blood-based assay targeting circulating tumor DNA methylation: a cross-sectional study in an average-risk population.

BACKGROUND: Effective screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) enables earlier diagnosis and intervention to improve patient survival. METHODS: In this study, we prospectively conducted a blood-based CRC screening program for community residents in Hanjiang District, Yangzhou City, and evaluated the screening efficacy of a blood-based multi-locus DNA methylation assay (ColonAiQ). The ColonAiQ-positive rate and colonoscopy participation rate of the population, detection rate of intestinal lesions, and positive predictive value (PPV) of CRC and advanced adenoma (AA) were calculated, and the associ

Intussusception in adults caused by intestinal lipoma: a report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Adult intussusception is a rare and challenging condition to diagnose and treat. Intussusception caused by a small intestinal lipoma is uncommon and is often diagnosed after the intussusception occurs, which makes diagnosis difficult. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of small bowel obstruction caused by ileoileal intussusception resulting from a submucosal intestinal lipoma. Both patients underwent exploratory laparotomy, resection of the gangrenous bowel segment, and ileoileal anastomosis. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Lipomas are typically asymptomatic and are us

"Intestinal-type" mucinous adenocarcinoma of the vulva: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: "Intestinal-type" mucinous carcinoma of the vulva is extremely rare with very few cases reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: The authors report two patients who had diagnosis of intestinal-type mucinous adenocarcinoma of the vulva after excisional biopsy. In both cases, restaging was perfomed with total body computed tomography (CT) scan, gastroscopy, and colonoscopy that showed no other site of disease. A radical vulvectomy with bilateral systematic inguinal lymphadenectomy was performed, and in both cases no residual disease was found. A patient developed metastatic (liver,

Pathology of colorectal cancer.

The earliest phases of colorectal tumourigenesis initiate in the normal mucosa, with a generalised disorder of cell replication, and with the appearance of clusters of enlarged crypts (aberrant crypts) showing proliferative, biochemical and biomolecular abnormalities. The large majority of colorectal malignancies develop from adenomatous polyps. These can be defined as well demarcated masses of epithelial dysplasia, with uncontrolled crypt cell division. An adenoma can be considered malignant when neoplastic cells pass through the muscularis mucosae and infiltrate the submucosa. Definitions li

[Endoscopic resection of 49 polyps of the colon and rectum larger than 2 cm].

The management of rectal and colonic polyps has changed since the advent of endoscopic polypectomy, that interrupts the adenoma-carcinoma sequence. We assessed the effectiveness, limitations, morbidity and mortality of endoscopic polypectomy in 49 polyps larger than 2 cm in diameter. Polypectomy was successful in 94% of polyps, which were predominantly located in left colon (92%) and were pedunculated (87%). A malignant component was found in 28.3% of polyps, that was observed with higher frequency in larger and sessile polyps and in male patients. There was no mortality and scarce morbidity r

Inflammatory myoglandular polyps of the colon and rectum. A clinicopathological study of 32 pedunculated polyps, distinct from other types of polyps.

Hitherto unclassified colorectal polyps were identified in 32 patients (23 men and 9 women; mean age, 53 years). The only symptom, which was observed in less than half the patients, was passage of blood or occult blood. Endoscopic examination revealed solitary pedunculated, red polyps with a smooth surface. These polyps were found in the left colon, especially in the sigmoid. Their characteristic features were inflammatory granulation tissue in the lamina propria mucosae, proliferation of smooth muscle, and hyperplastic glands with occasional cystic dilatation. The etiology of this type of pol
