We have previously reported successful isolation and cryopreservation of human intestinal mucosa (CHIM) with retention of viability and drug metabolizing enzyme activities. Here we report the results of the quantification of drug metabolizing enzyme activities in CHIM from different regions of the small intestines from 14 individual donors. CHIM were isolated from the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum of 10 individuals, and from 10 consecutive 12-inch segments starting from the pyloric sphincter of human small intestines from four additional individuals. P450 and non-P450 drug metabolizing enzyme a…

Across four large vertebrate groups-fish, reptiles, birds and mammals- intestine length has been shown to scale hyper-allometrically with body mass (BM), at an exponent higher than the geometric (isometric) expectation, 0.33. So far, amphibians have not been investigated in this respect. Combining original data from dissections and literature data, we evaluated the scaling of total intestine length with BM in the adult stages of 38 amphibian species (37 of which anurans). The BM range of investigated taxa was 2.2 to 113.5 g. When accounting for phylogeny, intestine length scaled with BM at an

A 7-year-old girl, coming from a rural area in Cameroon, presented to the emergency department with a 3-months history of abdominal pain. Her family also reported vomiting and minimal food intake for two weeks. Physical examination showed a palpable and mobile abdominal mass. An ultrasound showed a large intrabdominal multicystic lesion of about 10cm, close to the intestine and with no solid lesions in other organs. A laparotomy was scheduled and a mobile mass dependent on the jejunum was found. The mass caused an intestinal obstruction and was composed of several large cysts with whitish flui

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Transplantation of the intestine is a vital component in the treatment of many intrabdominal tumors. This is a comprehensive review of current practice and outcome of intestinal transplantation for tumors.
RECENT FINDINGS: Most commonly described for the intrabdominal desmoid tumor, excellent survival outcomes can be attained, particularly for the more aggressive desmoid tumors associated with familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome and early referral is critical in order to avoid diffuse tumor spread which would necessitate a more complex multivisceral transplant. Currentl

Iron in the gut is like a double-edged sword. On one side, it is essential for numerous physiological processes, including oxygen transport and energy production, and is crucial for addressing conditions like anemia. However, on the other side, excess or unabsorbed iron can disrupt gut homeostasis, fuel harmful pathogens, contribute to dysbiosis, and promote gut inflammation. The challenge lies in finding a balance that ensures adequate iron absorption while minimizing its adverse effects on the gut microbiota. Host and microbiota in the gut have evolved sophisticated strategies to maintain ir

Intestinal intussusception in adults is less common than in paediatric patients, and may be difficult to diagnose due to non-specific symptoms. Abdominal pain is the main clinical sign, but other symptoms such as nausea or transit disorders may also be present. Abdominal computerized tomography is the key investigation for the diagnosis, with sensitivity approaching 100 %. In 90 % of cases of intussusception in adults, a mass is at the origin of the intussusception. The causes may be benign (lipomas, Meckel's diverticulum) or malignant (metastases, digestive tumours). Management is surgical, w

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The intestinal rehabilitation program (IRP) is a comprehensive treatment strategy that employs various approaches implemented by multidisciplinary teams to treat intestinal failure in children. This program has shown promising results, such as reducing complications and improving prognosis and quality of life (QOL). In this review, we discuss the current status of this program and relevant topics.
RECENT FINDINGS: IRP includes the prevention and treatment of various complications such as intestinal failure associated liver disease, catheter-related bloodstream infection or

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Medical intestinal rehabilitation is a part of the very complex management of patients with intestinal failure. The goal is to achieve enteral autonomy and minimize need for parenteral nutrition and hydration. In this manuscript, we will review the strategies to achieve this goal with dietary optimization and pharmacologic interventions.
RECENT FINDINGS: We will review the most updated recommendations on medical management of patients with intestinal failure.
SUMMARY: Medical intestinal rehabilitation is just a portion of a multistep strategy that aims to minimize need of

Massive intestinal resection is a regrettably necessary but life-saving intervention for progressive or fulminant necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). However, the resultant short bowel syndrome (SBS) poses its own array of challenges and complications. Within hours of such an abrupt loss of intestinal length, the intestine begins to adapt. Our ability to understand this process of intestinal adaptation has proven critical in our ability to clinically treat the challenging problem of short bowel syndrome. This review first highlights key data relating to intestinal adaptation including structural

Parasites are a source of significant illness worldwide. In the United States, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, cyclosporiasis, and trichinellosis are nationally notifiable conditions. Pinworm, the most common intestinal parasite in children, is not a locally notifiable infection. Intestinal parasites have a wide range of acute and chronic symptoms but should be suspected in those who present with diarrhea lasting more than seven days. Infections most often occur through a fecal-oral route. Symptoms tend to be worse for children, older adults, or immunocompromised individuals. To diagnose Giardi

Stoma prolapse can usually be managed conservatively by stoma care nurses. However, surgical management is considered when complications make traditional care difficult and/or stoma prolapse affects normal bowel function and induces incarceration. If the stoma functions as a fecal diversion, the prolapse is resolved by stoma reversal. Loop stoma prolapse reportedly occurs when increased intraabdominal pressure induces stoma prolapse by pushing the stoma up between the abdominal wall and the intestine, particularly in cases of redundant or mobile colon. Therefore, stoma prolapse repair aims to

A 74-year-old man, in excellent physical condition and doing regular intense cycling, was evaluated for transient episodes of thoracic discomfort over a period of several months. His medical history only included a right inguinal hernia, surgically treated, and an abdominal aortic aneurysm measured at 46 mm and treated medically. Physical examination did not reveal much information. The patient did not report gastroesophageal reflux, dysphagia, or history of digestive occlusion. The patient had normal weight and had no trauma history. He had no nicotine or alcohol-dependent behaviors. Vital si
