A case is presented of asymptomatic cyanosis of the hands, seen four hours after dental surgery under intravenous, local and inhalational anaesthesia. Alphaprodine hydrochloride, a synthetic opiate and one of the agents used, may produce dilatation of the venous bed with passive venous pooling. Such a mechanism is thought to have occurred in this case, manifesting as cyanosis. A weakly positive intradermal skin test to alphaprodine suggests immediate type hypersensitivity as a possible underlying cause.

BACKGROUND: Skin tests are the main official diagnostic method for granting, maintaining, and regaining the officially tuberculosis free (OTF) herd status in the European Union. Although highly specific, repeated testing may lead to the culling of animals not infected with bovine tuberculosis (bTB) and the suspension of OTF status, a problem especially relevant in low-prevalence regions where most herds are OTF. Identifying risk factors that affect the specificity of the single (SIT) and comparative (CIT) intradermal tuberculin tests is therefore essential to optimize control measures.

From 1978 until 1993 we diagnosed 167 cases of inhalative allergy to silk-filled bed quilts. The patients experienced asthma attacks predominantly during the night. Occupational exposure to silk materials was found in six cases. Allergic contact dermatitis has been considered the most common of the many dermatologic conditions found with eyelid dermatitis. This is a retrospective study of 203 patients who presented with persistent or recurrent eyelid dermatitis with or without dermatitis elsewhere.
