Correlation between balanced fast field echo sequence and intraoperative findings in the surgical treatment of an intradural spinal arachnoid cyst: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Spinal arachnoid cysts can cause myelopathy through spinal cord compression. While MRI is the standard for diagnosis, traditional sequences may not clearly define cyst borders and septations, which are important for guiding surgical intervention. Balanced fast field echo (B-FFE) is an MRI sequence that highlights small arachnoid membranes within and at the borders of CSF spaces. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the case of a 13-year-old female who presented with progressive lower extremity paresthesias and weakness and urinary incontinence. MRI revealed an intradural cervicothorac

Risk factors for postoperative hypothermia in non-cardiac surgery patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative hypothermia seems to be a common problem in surgical patients but is easily ignored. This study aimed to identify risk factors for postoperative hypothermia in non-cardiac surgery patients. METHODS: We searched databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, VIP, Wan Fang, CNKI, and CBM from inception to April 2025. The studies were selected using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two reviewers screened studies, extracted data, and independently evaluated the risk of bias. The quality of the study was assessed with the Newcastle-Ottawa S

Recurrent Epistaxis Immediate Following Upper Blepharoplasty: Treatment with Tranexamic Acid.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a widely performed and generally safe oculoplastic procedure. While common complications such as ecchymosis, edema, or hematoma are well-documented, epistaxis has not been reported as a postoperative consequence in the absence of nasal instrumentation. Herein, we present a rare case of recurrent anterior epistaxis following bilateral upper blepharoplasty in a healthy 72-year-old woman with no prior history of nasal pathology, bleeding disorder, or systemic disease. The surgery was performed under local anesthesia with lidocaine and epinephrine, with no intraopera

Prone Position-Induced Visceral Organ Injury During Spinal Surgery for Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Case Report of Hepatic, Pancreatic, and Renal Complication.

Intra-abdominal complications related to spinal surgery are uncommon but may result in serious morbidity. Prone positioning, often used in scoliosis correction procedures, has been implicated in compression-induced injuries of visceral organs, particularly in patients with anatomical deformities such as thoracic asymmetry and lumbar lordosis. We report a rare case of concurrent liver injury, pancreatic damage, and renal dysfunction following posterior spinal fusion in a 12-year-old male with idiopathic scoliosis. Despite intraoperative decompression precautions and stable hemodynamics, the pat

Recurrent distal ventriculoperitoneal shunt migration in an obese patient with high-grade glioma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: In neurosurgical practice, ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting is the predominant intervention for hydrocephalus. While shunt-related complications such as obstruction, infection, and mechanical failure are well recognized, distal catheter migration remains an uncommon but clinically significant problem. Migration may occur internally or externally and is influenced by patient-specific and technical factors. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 63-year-old woman with a newly diagnosed World Health Organization grade IV astrocytoma presented with acute obstructive hydrocephalus requiring emergent VP

Confronting the uncommon: Cholecystitis and cholangitis in a young adult arising from a bilobed gallbladder with subvesicle duct - A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bilobed gallbladder is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the duplication of the gallbladder. It presents a unique challenge for surgeons due to its infrequency and the potential for perioperative complications. Anatomical variations, including the presence of the subvesicle duct of Luschka, should be suspected in these cases. CASE PRESENTATION: In our case report, we present the clinical details of a **23-year-old male** who presented with symptoms of acute cholecystitis and cholangitis. Preoperative imaging revealed a bilobed gallbladder, and incidentall

Pancreaticoduodenectomy in Patients With Coeliac or Superior Mesenteric Artery Stenosis: A Review of the Literature.

Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple's procedure) is a technically demanding operation performed for malignant and premalignant conditions of the pancreatic head, duodenum and bile duct. Awareness of the vascular anatomy, variations, and pathology of this area is essential to achieve safe surgery and good outcomes. The operation involves division of the gastroduodenal artery (GDA) which provides communication between the foregut and midgut blood supply. In patients with coeliac or superior mesenteric artery (SMA) stenosis, this can lead to reduced blood supply to the foregut or midgut organs, with

Unexpected right-sided sigmoid colon in laparoscopy: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: The presence of a right-sided sigmoid colon is a rare anatomical variation usually discovered incidentally during surgical interventions. This case report details an unexpected right-sided sigmoid colon identified during a laparoscopic appendectomy and examines the pertinent literature to explore its clinical importance. CASE SUMMARY: A 71-year-old woman presented with acute appendicitis. A preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan showed peri-appendiceal inflammation but no significant anatomical abnormalities. During laparoscopic surgery, an unexpected finding was encountered:

Chondrosarcoma Skull Base: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrosarcomas are primary malignant bone tumor that rarely occurs in the head and neck region. Squash cytology of skull base neoplasm shows atypical chondrocytes and myxoid stroma, which suggests many possibilities like chordoma, chordoid glioma, chordoid meningioma and chondrosarcoma. Isocitrate dehydrogenase gene (IDH) mutations have been reported in 50% to 60% of the head and neck region chondrosarcoma. Clinical presentation and treatment of catameinal pneumothorax and endometriosis-related pneumothorax.

Introduction: Catamenial pneumothorax (CP) is defined as a recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax occurring in females of reproductive age. In the 'perimenstrual period,' it is still considered relatively rare although accounting for 20-35% of spontaneous pneumothoraces occurring in premenopausal women. It is the most frequent manifestation of thoracic endometriosis, which can also cause pneumothorax during the intermenstrual period (TER non-CP). Areas covered: In this article, we review and comment the clinical presentation, etiopathogenesis, diagnostic criteria, and therapeutic management of CP

[Coronary Artery Spasm during Anesthesia: Discussion of Cases Leading to Circulatory Collapse through 51 Reports of the Published Literature].

BACKGROUND: Perioperative coronary artery spasm (GAS) is one of the serious complications leading to circulatory collapse. Here we retrospectively examined the impact of CAS and discussed its prevention strate- gies. METHODS: Reports of intraoperative CAS were iden- tified by using the PubMed and by manually searching the Journal of Japan Society for Clinical Anesthesia (2001-2015). Analyses were performed on 51 patients who developed CAS and had had no history of isch- emic heart disease. RESULTS: Of the 51 analyzed patients, 19 developed circulatory collapse. In these patients, the rate of

Vernix caseosa peritonitis.

Vernix caseosa peritonitis (VCP) is a rare and serious complication of caesarean section. It is thought to occur as a result of spillage of amniotic fluid and or meconium into the maternal peritoneal cavity at caesarean section. It manifests as an acute abdomen days to weeks after a seemingly uncomplicated caesarean section. Only 18 cases have been reported in the literature and all but one are from the USA. The pathophysiology is incompletely understood. In the past, the management of VCP included a laparotomy and removal of suspected abdominal organs which were invariably found to be normal

[Iatrogenic perforations of the esophagus and hypopharynx--5 year experience at the Center for Esophageal Surgery].

Iatrogenic perforations of the esophagus and hypopharynx are important problem, due to diagnostic difficulties, controversies about adequate treatment, and high morbidity and mortality rate. Incidence of iatrogenic perforations is from 50 to 75% of all perforations. In the period from April 1999. to April 2004, 15 patients with iatrogenic perforation of the esophagus and hypopharynx were treated at the Department of esophageal surgery, First University Surgical Hospital in Belgrade. In majority of patients iatrogenic perforation occured during endoscopic interventional procedure (endoscopic re

Risk factors in elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy for conversion to open cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Most cholecystectomies can be performed using a laparoscopic approach. However, 3 to 10 percent of laparoscopic cholecystectomies (LC) must be converted to open cholecystectomies (OC) and preoperative factors that predict risk for conversion are still not defined. STUDY DESIGN: Preoperative and intraoperative data were collected and analyzed from 628 patients who were scheduled for elective LC by two surgeons in an academic institution. Logistic regression was performed on data from two groups of patients: LC completed, 596 patients (95 percent) and LC converted, 32 patients (5 pe

Antidepressants and the risk of abnormal bleeding during spinal surgery: a case–control study.

INTRODUCTION: Antidepressant medications are widely used by patients requiring spinal surgery. In spite of a generally favorable safety profile of newer antidepressants, several prior studies have suggested an association between use of serotonergic antidepressants and excessive bleeding. This study was designed to determine if there was any association between antidepressant use and the risk of excessive intraoperative blood loss during spinal surgery, and whether particular types of antidepressants were specifically associated with this increased blood loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrosp

Liver pucker sign: predictor of difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Pucker sign is the depression of the liver in the region of the gallbladder due to a high degree of chronic contractive inflammation of the gallbladder. It usually develops in patients who have a delayed cholecystectomy after acute cholecystitis due to a high degree of chronic contractive inflammation of the gallbladder and contraction of the cystic plate. It is an essential finding either preoperatively or intraoperatively as it can act as a stopping rule during cholecystectomy (act as a guide that cholecystectomy will be difficult). CASE SERIES: The authors here report three c
