BACKGROUND: The ingestion of caustic substances remains an important public health issue worldwide. Children represent 80% of the ingestion injury population globally. Accidental alkaline material accounts for most caustic ingestions. There is no conclusive evidence of tissue damage and stricture protection of a nasogastric-tube with a solid dilator in the literature, therefore it was hypothesized that early intraesophageal tube placement does not cause additional histopathologic damage and prevents strictures.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a common and safe procedure for enteral nutrition. There are few reports concerning its complications. The insertion of a nasogastric tube for feeding and gastric aspiration is a common practice in the care of newborns, especially if they are preterm and unwell. Esophageal perforation is a rare but serious complication of this procedure. Associated perforation of the pericardial sac is an unusual, severe, and previously unreported complication of nasogastric tube feeding in a neonate. We present an illustrative case.

A percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy remains the first choice when oral feeding is difficult. In some patients however an endoscopic placement of a gastrostomy tube is not possible. PURPOSE: To verify if correct ProSeal laryngeal mask airway (PLMA) placement may condition blind insertion of a gastric tube via the PLMA.
METHODS: The PLMA was studied in 150 anesthetized patients using a size #4 in (females) and #5 in (males). Its position was determined by inserting a fibrescope in the airway tube. A lubricated gastric tube was inserted through the PLMA drainage tube, recording the number of attempts at insertion. Push enteroscopy has superseded sonde enteroscopy principally because of its ability to provide therapy, as well as diagnosis. An overtube limits gastric looping and allows deeper jejunal insertion. A working channel allows therapeutic intervention. The technique is increasingly used to the diagnosis and treatment of small intestinal disorders, particularly in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.
