PURPOSE: Traumatic aniridia is often associated with severe anterior segment disruption, resulting in aphakia and corneal irregularity. Previous treatments included corneal tattooing and prosthetic contact lens correction. In the last 15 years, artificial iris implants have been demonstrated as safe and efficacious for reducing glare. SETTING: Robert Koch Hospital, Hannover-Gehrden, Germany (Center A), and Dr. Daljit Singh Eye Hospital, Amritsar, India (Center B).

Twelve patients with retinal detachment with postoperative angle closure due to ciliary body edema, refractory to topical cycloplegics and corticosteroids, were managed by peripheral iris retraction with argon laser photocoagulation. We report a unique case of a posttraumatic iris implantation cyst with sediment containing occult glass intraocular foreign bodies detected 50 years after penetrating ocular trauma. Ultrasound biomicroscopy demonstrated foreign-body echoes with reverberation artifacts within the cyst fluid sediment, which were confirmed intraoperatively as glass particles.
