Survival outcomes in small intestine tumors: The role of duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.

Small intestine tumors are rare, with variable prognostic factors. The impact of tumor location on survival outcomes remains controversial. This study explores the influence of tumor location (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) on survival. We analyzed data from the SEER database for small intestine cancer patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2017. Survival outcomes by tumor location were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method and competing risk models, stratified by adenocarcinoma (ADC), neuroendocrine tumor (NET), and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Propensity score matching (PSM) was employed

Tumours of the midgut (jejunum, ileum and ascending colon, including carcinoid syndrome).

(Neuro-)endocrine tumours of the gastrointestinal tract are also called 'carcinoids'. (Neuro-)endocrine midgut tumours can be categorized according to their clinical behaviour. Most tumours are non-functioning. Functioning tumours are responsible for the carcinoid syndrome. The carcinoid syndrome is almost uniquely associated with midgut carcinoids. Symptoms of the carcinoid syndrome are caused by an excess of biogenic amines, peptides and other factors in the circulation. The typical symptoms of the carcinoid syndrome are diarrhoea, flushing, and carcinoid heart disease. Carcinoid heart disea

Jejunal loop obstruction at the ligament of Treitz: a distinct radiological and clinical picture of recurrence after subtotal pancreatectomy.

Of 99 patients operated on with subtotal pancreatectomy due to ampullary carcinoma, five had a local recurrence in the pancreatic bed at the ligament of Treitz. The patients all had distinct symptoms: recurrent bouts of fever, general malaise, and rapid loss of weight. They had little pain, but all were jaundiced in spite of absence of marked compression of the bile ducts. Computed tomography or ultrasound could not detect the small, local recurrence that was obstructing the jejunal loop 10-15 cm distal to the hepaticojejunostomy, but as an indirect sign of the recurrence, the distended small

Carcinoids of the small intestine: a statistical evaluation of 1102 cases collected from the literature.

A total of 1102 cases of jejunoileal carcinoids collected from 516 articles reported by over 35 countries or related areas were evaluated. Among these 1102 cases. 93 cases of Meckel's diverticular and 969 cases of remaining jejunoileal carcinoids could be effectively analyzed. Multiple clinicopathologic aspects were investigated including clinical manifestations, location, depth and size of the lesions related to metastases, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, carcinoid syndrome and serotonin activity. Jejunoileal carcinoids were characterized by a male preponderance with an age group o

Radiation enteritis.

The frequent use of radiotherapy for abdominal and pelvic malignancies results in an increased risk of radiation enteritis. An increased understanding of the tissue response and the clinical features of radiation enteritis has led to advances in the prevention and management of this condition. Importantly, improvements in the delivery of radiotherapy, including techniques to reduce the amount of exposed small intestine in the radiation field, represent a critical strategy for prevention. Data indicate that radioprotectant agents have the potential to reduce intestinal mucosal injury and may be

[Primary lymphoma of the small intestine: clinico-radiological correlations].

From 1987 to 1989, 7 patients were diagnosed as having a primary lymphoma of the small bowel. The patients, 5 men and 2 women aged 14-66 years (average: 45), were studied by means of small bowel enema and CT. Using small bowel enema, our findings were: masses related to a loop, stenosis, mucosal patterns with thick, irregular, and nodular folds, and bowel walls thickening. In nearly all cases CT showed not only small bowel lesions but also mesenteric lymphadenopathy. Five of seven patients had lymphomas, 1 had IP-SID lymphoma (immunoproliferative small intestinal disease related lymphoma), and

Complete response to sunitinib for more than three years in a patient with a jejunum gastrointestinal stromal tumor: A case report.

RATIONALE: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract and is characterized by KIT mutations. Patientsresistant to 1st-line imatinib therapy are usually given sunitinib assecond-line treatment, which provides a median progression-free survival of 8 to 12 months. We report the 1st case of metastatic jejunum GIST with a KIT exon 11 deletion that showed complete response (CR) to sunitinib for more than 3 years. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 34-year-old man with advanced jejunum GIST was surgically treated upon initial diagnosis, and was histolog

Intussusception in gestational choriocarcinoma (not histologically proven), resolving spontaneously with chemotherapy.

We present a rare case of advanced gestational choriocarcinoma with small bowel metastatic involvement and intussusception, which presented acutely as a lower gastrointestinal bleed with symptomatic anaemia and haemoglobin 3.8 g/dL in a young woman. A diagnosis of gestational choriocarcinoma was made without biopsy, using a combination of clinical history, isolated elevated human chorionic gonadotropin markers of 77,000 IU/mL and radiological findings. Surgical intervention was too high risk due to the presence of active bleeding and increased vascularity surrounding the intussusception. Owing

Presence of sorbin in human digestive tract and endocrine digestive tumours.

BACKGROUND: Sorbin, a 153 amino acid peptide isolated from porcine intestine, was localised by immunohistochemistry in endocrine cells of the intestinal mucosa and pancreas and in the enteric nervous system in the pig. AIMS: To identify sorbin cells in normal human digestive tissues and to explore the expression of sorbin in 37 digestive endocrine tumours: 14 intestinal carcinoid tumours and 23 endocrine pancreatic tumours including six insulinomas. METHODS: Two polyclonal antibodies against the C-terminal and the N-terminal sequences of porcine sorbin raised in rabbit were used to evaluate

Jejunal Lymphatic and Vascular Anatomy Defines Surgical Principles for Treatment of Jejunal Tumors.

BACKGROUND: The jejunum has a wide lymphatic drainage field, making radical surgery difficult. OBJECTIVE: Extrapolate results from 2 methodologies to define jejunal artery lymphatic clearances and lymphovascular bundle shapes for radical bowel-sparing surgery. DESIGN: Two cohort studies. SETTINGS: The first data set comprised dissections of cadavers at the University of Geneva. The second data set incorporated preoperative 3-dimensional CT vascular reconstructions of patients included in the "Surgery with Extended (D3) Mesenterectomy for Small Bowel Tumors" clinical trial. PATIENTS: Eight

[Surgical Removal of Migrated Coil after Embolization of Jejunal Variceal Bleeding: A Case Report].

Jejunal variceal bleeding is less common compared with esophagogastric varices in patients with portal hypertension. However, jejunal variceal bleeding can be fatal without treatment. Treatments include surgery, transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunt (TIPS), endoscopic sclerotherapy, percutaneous coil embolization, and balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO). Percutaneous coil embolization can be considered as an alternative treatment option for those where endoscopic sclerotherapy, surgery, TIPS or BRTO are not possible. Complications of percutaneous coil embolizat

An unusual enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma with MYC translocation arising in a Japanese patient: a case report.

Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL) is a rare peripheral T-cell lymphoma classified into 2 types, with or without celiac disease, based on histology. Type 2 EATL is less commonly associated with celiac disease, in which cells are characterized by being monomorphic and small- to medium-sized. Cells are characterized by CD8 and CD56 expression and c-MYC oncogene locus gain. We present an atypical case of type 2 EATL in the jejunum, with human T-lymphotropic virus-1 that was CD4- CD8+ CD56- CD30- CD25- TIA-1+ and granzyme B+ on immunohistological staining. It also displayed translocatio
