A survey of environmental contamination with ascarid ova, Wallingford, Connecticut.

Few studies have been conducted in the United States to quantify the potential risk associated with encountering zoonotic ascarid ova in the environment. In an effort to raise awareness and to better understand the risk of acquiring visceral larva migrans in south central Connecticut, this environmental survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of ascarid ova (Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati, Baylisascaris columnaris, and Baylisascaris procyonis) in public areas of Wallingford, Connecticut, to compare prevalence levels among these public areas, and to determine what host species are prima

The epidemiology and public health importance of toxocariasis: a zoonosis of global importance.

Toxocariasis, caused by infection with larvae of Toxocara canis, and to a lesser extent by Toxocara cati and other ascaridoid species, manifests in humans in a range of clinical syndromes. These include visceral and ocular larva migrans, neurotoxocariasis and covert or common toxocariasis. Toxocara canis is one of the most widespread public health and economically important zoonotic parasitic infections humans share with dogs, cats and wild canids, particularly foxes. This neglected disease has been shown through seroprevalence studies to be especially prevalent among children from socio-econo

Chronic Larva Currens Following Tourist Travel to the Gambia and Southeast Asia Over 20 Years Ago.

Larva currens is the cutaneous manifestation of human infection with the geotropic helminth Strongyloides stercoralis. Strongyloidiasis is a lifelong infection unless treated. A high index of suspicion is needed to prevent chronic symptoms of strongyloidiasis (eg, larva currens, eosinophilia, abdominal discomfort) and to prevent fatal dissemination. We present a case of chronic larva currens following tourist travel to the Gambia and Southeast Asia>20 years ago. This case highlights several important features of larva currens and strongyloidiasis, including the chronicity of symptoms, the rapi

[Migrating subcutaneous myasis with systemic manifestations caused by gadfly larvae].

The paper describes a case of cutaneous myiasis caused by the larvae of Hypoderma bovis. Its prolonged recurrent course over 4 months was observed. It appeared as migrating mass lesions, toxicoallergic reactions, and syncope. The paper is the first to show it possible to perform chemotherapy of myiasis with the antibiotic ivermectin in combination with aversectin ointment.

[Eosinophilic meningo-encephalo-myelitis due to Toxocara canis].

A 21-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of frontal headache, low-grade fever and convulsion. The patient had long been in a close contact with a dog. Neurologic examination revealed meningeal irritation signs and cerebellar ataxia. Slight leukocytosis with an increased rate of eosinophils (23.2%) was present. A lumbar puncture yielded 330 leukocytes/microliters with 30% of eosinophils; protein, 55 mg/dl; and increased IgG synthesis, 43.6 mg/day. The antibody titer against Toxocara canis was positive both in serum and in CSF by the use of immunoblotting assay, Ouchterlony, indi

[Dermatology in French Guiana].

In French Guayana, climatic and geographic conditions enhance development of numerous fungal, parasitic and microbial skin diseases. The most particular infectious diseases of this French department are lobomycosis, chromomycosis (Phialophora pedrosoi), creeping disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, mycobacterial ulcus (Mycobacterium ulcerans) and papular dermatitis caused by nettling hairs of lepidoptera (Hylesia urticans). The occurence of these skin diseases is demonstrative of pathological ecology of the Amazonian country.

Major helminthic diseases of North America: a review.

Disease producing worms are worldwide in distribution. The worms of significance in North America are the nematodes and the cestodes. Diagnosis is rarely made on clinical grounds alone because the clinical presentation of infection varies widely. Examination of stool for ova is usually the definitive diagnostic step. Follow-up stool examination several weeks after treatment is mandatory. The clinical findings pertaining to each type of worm and the recommended treatment are delineated.

[Cercarial dermatitis].

A POTENTIAL PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM: Cercarial dermatitis is caused by the infestation of the skin by cercariae of nonhuman schistosomes whose commonest hosts are aquatic birds. Human contamination can occur during swimming in fresh water infested with cercariae and notably ducks. Its geographic distribution is worldwide and is increasingly described in France during the summer months. FROM A CLINICAL POINT OF VIEW: A diffuse eruption composed of prurigenous maculopapules appears within the 24 hours following exposure. Regression is spontaneous within one day to three weeks. PREVENTION IS ADVISA

Distribution of Toxocara cati larvae in experimentally infected BALB/c mice.

The experimental infection of mice with Toxocara cati provides one of the best models for pathological and immunological study of the visceral larva migrans syndrome. To broaden our knowledge of T. cati larval migration, BALB/c mice were inoculated with 500 embryonated eggs of T. cati for a period of two months. In the present study, T. cati eggs, obtained from faeces of naturally infected cats, were used for infection. After oral infection of 500 embryonated eggs of T. cati, mice were euthanised at 1, 2, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 70 days post-infection (dpi) in groups of three per day. System

Method for detecting circulating Toxocara canis antigen and its application in human serum samples.

Diagnosis of larval migrans (LM) is usually done by immunodiagnostic methods. These methods, however, simply show the presence or absence of antibody but not the active infection of the patients. Therefore, we aimed to establish a diagnostic method for detecting circulating Toxocara canis antigen using a sandwich, ELISA. Monoclonal antibodies (MAb) were produced against the excretory-secretory (ES) antigen of second-stage T canis larvae. Among the MAbs obtained, we selected one MAb (TCMAb12; molecular weight, 30-80 kDa, IgG) for use in the sandwich ELISA. The cross-reactivity of the sandwich-E

How High is Too High? The Diagnostic Value of Absolute Eosinophil Count in Excluding Parasitic Infection.

BACKGROUND: Whereas most recommendations for evaluation of eosinophilic patients list exclusion of parasitic infections as an initial step, this proves difficult in practice due to the lack of sensitive and specific testing. The aim of the current study was to explore the utility of peak absolute eosinophil count (AEC) and serum IgE in distinguishing parasitic from non-parasitic causes of marked eosinophilia. METHODS: Patients with peak AEC ≥500/µL enrolled on NIH protocols for suspected parasitic disease or eosinophilia between January 1, 1974 and July 30, 2024 were included in this retrospe

Enhanced resolution of eosinophilic liver abscess associated with toxocariasis by albendazole treatment.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Visceral larva migrans, caused by Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati, has emerged as a significant cause of eosinophilic liver abscess (ELA). Differentiation of ELA associated with toxocariasis (ELA-T) from metastasis or primary liver malignancy is sometimes difficult. However, the role of albendazole treatment remains uncertain in this condition. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether albendazole can enhance the radiologic resolution of ELA-T. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the patients diagnosed with ELA-T at our institution between January
