BACKGROUND: Although not rare, vascular lesions occurring in the lips sometimes poses a difficult in properly diagnosing and handling them. In this study, vascular lesions occurring in the lips were retrieved from an Oral Pathology Service.
METHODS: Among 5600 biopsies, 131 cases were found. The following diagnoses were attributed: caliber-persistent artery, infantile hemangioma, vascular malformation, venous lake, thrombus, papillary endothelial hyperplasia and pyogenic granuloma. Clinical data were obtained from patients' records.
RESULTS: The lesions' frequency were: pyogenic granuloma (4…

A case-control study was conducted to reveal risk factors for cleft lip and palate. The main group consisted of 41mothers of infants with orofacial clefts (cleft lip and/or palate) who were born in Tbilisi maternity houses during 2015-2016. The control group was composed of 61 mothers who have given birth to healthy babies in the same maternity houses. Information on possible risk factors was collected using a special form. In order to evaluate a role of these risk factors, bivariate analysis was conducted at the first stage of the study. Odds ratio (OR) was calculated for each factor, signifi…

BACKGROUND: Clefts of the lip and/or palate are the most common congenital craniofacial defects and second only to club foot among all congenital anomalies. The management of this condition is resource intensive due to the multidimensional needs. This survey was carried out to ascertain the current state of cleft management in Nigeria with emphasis on training, scope of management, and assessment of treatment outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Structured questionnaires were administered to cleft surgeons based on professional and practitioners' register and the result of literature search for cl…

Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital anomalies. For many years, surgeons have been attempting to reduce the severity of the deformity before the surgical repair to achieve a better outcome. The nasoalveolar molding technique uses acrylic nasal stents attached to the vestibular shield of an oral molding plate to mold the nasal alar cartilages into a more normal form and position during the presurgical period. Proponents of nasoalveolar molding claim several benefits, including improved aesthetic outcome, reduced overall costs, and a psychosocial benefit to the family. Resea…

BACKGROUND: Median cleft lip is a rare anomaly consisting of a midline vertical cleft through the upper lip. It can also involve the premaxillary bone, the nasal septum, and the central nervous system. In our current report, we present the clinical features of 6 patients with a median cleft lip and their surgical management according to the accompanying anomalies.
METHODS: From December 2010 to January 2014, 6 patients with a median cleft lip were reviewed. Five of these cases underwent surgical correction; alveolar bone grafting was performed in a patient with a median alveolar cleft. The su…

INTRODUCTION: Perceptual evaluation is considered the gold standard to evaluate speech nasality. Several procedures are used to collect and analyze perceptual data, which makes it susceptible to errors. Therefore, there has been an increasing desire to find methods that can improve the assessment.
OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare the results of speech nasality obtained by assessments of live speech, the Test of Hypernasality (THYPER), assessments of audio recorded speech, and nasometry.
METHODS: A retrospective study consisting of 331 patients with operated unilateral cleft lip and palate.…

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the cephalometric features of subjects with incompetent lips, and to find the most discriminant variables for lip incompetence among the following: dental protrusion and proclination, antero-posterior and vertical skeletal relationships, and lip dimensions.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between 2011 and 2012. Cephalograms of 84 subjects (22 males and 62 females, aged 20.18+/-3.65 years) diagnosed as having incompetent lips were collected (incompetent group [IG]) and compared with the contr…

Basal cell adenoma is a rare type of benign salivary gland tumor found most commonly in the parotid gland. We present a rare case of basal cell adenoma arising in the minor salivary gland of the upper lip. The patient was a 59-year-old Japanese man who visited our department in December 2012 with a chief complaint of a mass in the upper lip, which had increased in size over several years. A mobile, elastic, and relatively soft mass without tenderness was palpable in the upper lip region. The mucosa of the upper lip covering the mass was normal. Tumor extirpation was performed under local anest…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent evidence-based literature focusing on cleft lip and palate outcomes research.
RECENT FINDINGS: The findings of recently published literature focus on cleft lip and palate outcomes research, patient-based outcomes measurement tools, nasoalveolar molding, and how speech outcomes relate to palatoplasty timing, technique, and intravelar veloplasty. Studies have investigated the relationship between palatoplasty timing and facial development.
SUMMARY: The literature lacks any evidence-based consensus to support a superior me…

Patients with cleft lip and palate frequently develop dento-facial deformity requiring orthognatic surgery. The origin of this deformity is therapeutic and surgeons are currently trying to prevent this iatrogenicity. The maxillary dento-facial deformity in these patients is a retrognathia with infragnathia, associated with endognathia, obliquity of the occlusal plane, with deviation of the superior incisive midline in case of unilateral clefts. The difficulties in the treatment of these skeletal deformities are due to the palatal, labial, and pterygomaxillary scar tissue. Orthognathic surgery …

The Abbé flap is a procedure where the volume of the upper lip is increased at the expense of the lower lip. This study reviewed the Abbé flaps done at Skåne University Hospital during the years 1991-2006 and identified 14 patients. Data was collected from medical records. Eleven patients were deemed fit for interviews and were called to the hospital by standard mail. Six patients responded and were interviewed, examined, and photographed. One patient was interviewed over the telephone. Median age at surgery was 14 years (range = 6-22). The operation time was 152 minutes (range = 90-215). The …

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess if children with clefts have an increased caries experience.
METHODS: Caries data was collected via clinical examination of 115 4- to 21-year-olds with clefts and 230 controls. Cleft type was confirmed through their medical records and fluoride exposure history; oral hygiene habits and dietary history were obtained though a questionnaire.
RESULTS: The adherence to the preventive oral health habits (tooth-brushing, use of fluoride, and dietary factors) were not different among groups excluding the use of dental floss. The mean DMFT was 1.20 (±1

The orthodontic treatment of patients with all types of cleft lip and palate, a resume of facial growth and discussion on dental and occlusal development is presented. A fully integrated cleft team provides life-long interdisciplinary holistic treatment for patients born with an orofacial cleft. To understand the team approach to cleft care, this article should be read in close conjunction with those on speech therapy, surgery and alveolar bone grafting to determine the synergy required between these and other clinical specialties. Team working is essential to produce successful patient outcom…
