Reflectance confocal microscopy of mucosal pigmented macules: a review of 56 cases including 10 macular melanomas.

BACKGROUND: Although most mucosal pigmented macules are benign, it can be clinically challenging to rule out an early melanoma. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a noninvasive imaging technique useful in discriminating between benign and malignant skin lesions. OBJECTIVES: To describe the confocal aspects of benign and malignant mucosal pigmented macules with histopathological correlations. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the confocal images of 56 labial or genital pigmented macules including 10 macular melanomas. According to the retrospective nature of the study, we evaluated t

Cryosurgery for hemangiomas of the body surface and oral cavity.

The indications for and limitations of cryosurgery for various types of hemangiomas on the body surface or in the intraoral region are reported based on our clinical experience. In our opinion, cryosurgery is not the method of choice in the management of hemangiomas but is useful under certain conditions, as with a localized cavernous under certain conditions, as with a localized cavernous hemangioma in the facial or intraoral region. It is also valuable for strawberry marks with bleeding or infection and may be acceptable for small port-wine stains; in the treatment of extensive port-wine sta

Revisiting lip shave: a solution for disorders of the vermilion border.

Actinic keratosis, leukoplakia, carcinoma in situ, and superficially invasive carcinomas of the lower lip are caused mainly by the cumulative effects of exposure of the vermilion of the lower lip to ultraviolet radiation. Current treatments all have limitations: cryosurgery or electrosurgery is suitable to treat only focal lesions; topical chemotherapy, which is an option for diffuse actinic damage, yields unreliable results; and laser treatment fails to rejuvenate the vermilion. However, "lip shave", which involves full-thickness excision of the damaged vermilion and reconstruction with an ad

The Upper Lip Partial Subunit Superiorly Based Orbicularis Oris Sling Flap to Repair Upper Cutaneous Lip Defects.

BACKGROUND: The traditional V-Y advancement flap to repair upper cutaneous lip defects may cause a fat lip or a noticeable oblique scar within the cosmetic subunit. The upper lip partial subunit superiorly based orbicularis oris sling flap is a novel modification that reduces lip fullness and hides scars along cosmetic subunit junctions. OBJECTIVE: To describe the technique and aesthetic outcomes in a cohort of patients with upper cutaneous lip defects repaired with the upper lip partial subunit superiorly based orbicularis oris sling flap. METHODS: A retrospective case series was performed

Karapandzic flap for reconstruction of lip defects.

PURPOSE: Systematic evaluation of the Karapandzic flap in the reconstruction of lip defects after ablative surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients who had a Karapandzic flap to reconstruct lip defects were analyzed with reference to demographic details, histology and location of the tumor, and dimensions of resection. The functional aspects of the reconstruction were assessed in terms of the size of the oral stoma, preservation of oral competence, and facial expression, in addition to speech, diet and ease of cutlery, and denture usage. The esthetic outcome was assessed with a 4-point scale a

[Esthetic reconstruction of the superior hemilip using the Abbé technique modified by Burget. Apropos of 5 cases].

When a patient must undergo resection of part of the upper lip for the treatment of a cancer or following a traumatic defect of the upper hemilip, the surgeon is faced with the problem of reconstruction of a lip whose appearance and function must be as close as possible to the normal lip. The limits of the normal lip must be restored: the symmetry, equilibrium of the lips and position of the commissures must be maintained. The upper lip esthetic unit can be divided into subunits, as described by Burget and Menick. If a large part of a subunit is removed, replacement of the entire subunit rathe

Assessment of the presence of interleukin 17+ macrophages and Th17 cells in situ in lip and oral tongue cancer.

Increasing clinical evidence indicates that Th17 cells may promote or inhibit tumor progression, however the exact role of these cells in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCCs) pathogenesis and progression remains unclear. Tumor associated macrophages are highly plastic phenotype cells which can differentiate as M1 or M2. The mechanism and cellular phenotype of IL-17 expressing macrophages are unknown. 40 cases of lip and 28 of tongue SCCs were submitted to immunohistochemical analysis, and histologically graded. In tongue cases TNM was analyzed. The number of IL-17+ T cells was higher in lip SC

5-Aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy for early-stage lip squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip removed by surgery may cause lip dysfunction and scar. ALA-PDT (5-Aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy) is a minimally invasive treatment for superficial SCC in situ. However, few studies reported the use of topical ALA-PDT to manage lip SCC. METHODS: Between 2015 and 2017, 6 patients with Tis to T2 lip squamous cell carcinoma without evidence of lymph node spread, were treated with topical ALA-PDT at Shanghai Skin Disease Hospital. Clinical responses and side effect were evaluated according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid

Cancer risks among Missouri farmers.

A series of case-control studies was conducted to investigate cancer risks among farmers. These studies were based on Missouri Cancer Registry data for 15,000 white male patients, including 1720 subjects classified as farmers, registered between 1984 and 1988. For each cancer site, all other cancer registrations formed the control group. The largest risks among farmers were found for lip cancer (odds ratio [OR], 3.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.99 to 4.73) and cancer of the bone (OR, 2.02; 95% CI, 0.66 to 5.81). Elevated risks were observed for several other sites, including the nasal cav

Nasolabial and forehead flap reconstruction of contiguous alar-upper lip defects.

BACKGROUND: Defects of the nasal ala and upper lip aesthetic subunits can be challenging to reconstruct when they occur in isolation. When defects incorporate both the subunits, the challenge is compounded as subunit boundaries also require reconstruction, and local soft tissue reservoirs alone may provide inadequate coverage. In such cases, we used nasolabial flaps for upper lip reconstruction and a forehead flap for alar reconstruction. METHODS: Three men and three women aged 21-79 years (average, 55 years) were treated for defects of the nasal ala and upper lip that resulted from cancer (n

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip: survival analysis with long-term follow-up.

The first aim of this study was to evaluate the survival of the patients who underwent surgery due to lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Furthermore, the predictive value of the prognostic factors regarding overall outcome was also assessed. The secondary objective was to justify the need of a prophylactic neck dissection according to the tumor size. One hundred and one cases with lip SCC were included in this study. The data regarding prognostic factors and survival were retrospectively collected. The 5-year survival rate was found to be 82.1%. Among the multiple prognostic factors, only age

Fatal cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in a forty-three-year-old male.

A 43-year-old patient with a history of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip, multiple actinic keratoses, and multiple sequential SCC on sun-exposed area of his skin developed a subcutaneous nodule of SCC in an area where a cutaneous SCC had been excised 1 year previously. At the time of the subcutaneous nodule there was no evidence of metastases; 5 months later he had metastatic bone disease as well as apparent metastases to myocardium, pericardium, and pleura. The patient is notable for the young age at primary diagnosis of SCC, the fulminant lethal course of a tumor which is generally c

Gene sequencing applications to combat oral-cavity related disorders: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

Gene sequencing (GS) has numerous applications in combatting oral-cavity related disorders, including identifying genetic risk factors for diseases, developing targeted therapies, and improving diagnostic methods. It can help identify specific genetic mutations or variations that increase the risk of developing oral-cavity related disorders, such as oral cancer, periodontal disease, and cleft lip and palate. By the means of the following investigation, our primary objective was to assess the impact of GS technique in diagnosing and potentially treating diseases of the oral cavity by the means
